Hoot HQ, The Barker Hotel saw four full days of Jazz acts with three acts on opening night, ‘The Atlantic Street Band’, ‘The Various Nefarious’ and Proton Pill and and better Hoot Festival on the Queens Birthday long weekend. Mikayla Gilbert and her team wish to thank the volunteers as well as the Mt Barker Council for all helping out during the weekend. Feedback from all venues has been very positive, with everyone saying bring on 2014. Mt Barker Big Band Saxaphones, Graeme Taylor, Juan Carlos, Rhys Phlox and Mark Kleinmann perform at last Monday’s Jazz and Bowls during the Hoot Festival. Daniel Gibbons Trio - Daniel Gibbons Alto Saxaphone, Tom Leach, double Bass and Django Rowe, guitar, entertained lunch time patrons at Millies Bakery last Monday during the Hoot Festival. Nicholas Peddington, found during a game of Jazz Hide and Seek, at the Bluestone Estate display homes of Gallery Living last Monday at Hoot. across Gawler Street at Sazon Espresso ‘Salcedo’ warmed up the opening night crowd. Saturday commenced with a Jazz Breakfast at Cafe Acqua and then with international and Australian acts at The Haus, The White House and the Old Mill in Hahndorf, Millies, The Original Food Co., Hoot HQ, Cornerstone College, the Hoot Festival Club and Laratinga Cafe in Mt Barker along with venues in Macclesfield, Littlehampton and Nairne the weekend of music was well underway. Peter Hacquoil from Hahndorf provided music in Mt Barker Central to shoppers on the Baby White Grand Piano. Peter is one of only a handful of piano buskers in the world. His instrument of choice is a Kawai upright piano on wheels which he pushes around the city streets, navigating footpaths and curbs with relative ease. Peter can be found in Rundle Mall everyday entertaining passers-by and honeing his craft. Peter is a busking veteran, and has been playing his trusty mobile piano all around the coun- try for over 10 years. He has played in Sydney, Brisbane and Darwin, and has even tinkled the ivories on a dry riverbed near Alice Springs. Peter is available to hire for parties, weddings, social events, corporate functions or just to create a chilled-out atmosphere in pubs, cafes or hotel foyers. The youngsters were catered for with perform- ances of the Amazing Drumming Monkeys. Youngsters of all ages could get their Jazz fix on the ever popular Jazz trains which made the run to Bugle Ranges and back throughout the weekend with ‘The Atlantic Street Band’ playing on Saturday and Sunday along with ‘Ready Set Jazz!’ on Monday. Saturday night saw the James Carter Organ Trio from U.S.A. entertain at Cornerstone College and a double bill of Grace Knight with Liam Burrows at the Old Mill in Hahndorf. Dead Jazz Greats saw ‘Trace and the Smooth Meltdown’ entertain 200 people at the Kleemann Funerals Chapel in Mt Barker bringing Saturday to a close or was it an early start to Sunday morning. Sunday brought a variation to a traditional Dunn Memorial Church service which was taken over by Brass Souls while the ‘Soul Factor Gospel Choir’ performed on the Cornerstone College stage. More international acts took over the Hoot Festival Club on Sunday performing to the Jazz enthusiasts with ‘Snarky Puppy’ from the U.S.A. taking the stage followed by Adelaides hottest swing band ‘Lucky Seven’ Snarky Puppy enter- tained to a full house including two fans who had seen them in Melbourne at their last show. Snarky Puppy were seen in the By Jinga Bar late that night entertaining a small crowd on the glass piano along witha drum and trumpet to the wee hours of the morning. Brass Souls and the Mt Barker Big Band are part of the Mt Barker District Concert Band, currently rehearsing for their Caberet on July 6, if you like what you heard Sunday at Church or Monday at the bowling green contact the band for tickets. ‘Atlantic Odyssey’ brought Hoot back to The Three Brothers Arms in Macclesfield for the third afternoon in a row while the weekend was brought to a close with ‘Plush’ at the Gray’s Inn and the ‘Mike Stewart Big Band’ at the Hoot Festival Club. Hoot Festival commit- tee are pleased with the response from everyone, many travelling up from the city some on the whim of hearing what was going on in the hills from other people who were travel- ling up by bus.
