    O.S. Bulleid Biography

Oliver Bulleid was born in Invercargill, New Zealand. After the death of his father, the family moved to Llanfyllin,Wales. Aged 18 he joined the Great Northern Railway at Doncaster as an apprentice under H.A. Ivatt. Afterserving his apprenticeship he became the assistant to the Locomotive Running Superintendent, the followingyear he was promoted to Doncaster Works manager. In 1908, he moved to France to work for the WestinghouseElectric Corporation. He became the Assistant Works Manager and Chief Draughtsman.

In 1912, he returned to the GNR as Personal Assistant to Nigel Gresley. When World War One broke out Bulleidjoined the British Army and joined the rail transport division, reaching the rank of Major. Bulleid returned to theGNR after the war as Wagon and Carriage Works manager.

In 1937, Bulleid was offered the post of CME of the Southern Railway (SR) on the retirement of Maunsell.

The Bulleid 63'5" SetSouthern coaches lagged behind in design and comfort in regard to the other companies stock. To rectify this, in1945 Bulleid built the first of his 63'6" stock (67 ft over buffers), with the curved body side giving increased widthat shoulder height (later adopted in the design of BR Mk1's). Although they were steel skinned, the frames werestill made from wood. Underframes ramained riveted (welded underframes only came in in the early 1950's).Bogies were the standard Southern 8 ft wheelbase pattern. Production of 63'6" stock started in mid 1946 with arun of Corridor Composites and Corridor Brake Thirds, followed later in the year with runs of Semi Open BrakeThirds and a revised Corridor Composite. Other designations followed and continued to be built into the early BRera. In 1946 the Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company were contracted to build 24 3 car sets withminor body modifications (these have not been modelled). Many of the Bulleid 63'6" stock survived until the late1960's with all being withdrawn from passenger duties in 1968.

  • Southern Railway (BR-S) Coach Allocations

The Southern Railway and later BR(S) ran many coaches in fixed sets. It is beyond the scope of this manual to provide a comprehensive list. There are sources on the web of which we recommend http://www.semgonline.com/coach/CoachSets.txt which is very comprehensive but not easy to follow. An easier source in PDF format is available from Comet Models. http://www.cometmodels.co.uk/ . Go to the Downloads area and near the bottom of the list you will find SR Bulleid and BR(S) Mk1 coach allocations. Click on this and there are two PDF files available to download. There are other sources available and a browser search will find them. Other coaches ran as Loose coaches and were assigned as required, Were Brakes ran as loose coaches, no set numbers appeared on the coach ends. The procedure to remove the set numbers is explained below.

To alter numbers on individual coaches in the scenario editor, double click on a coach. A flyout willappear on the right of the screen. Enter your chosen number in the box and press ENTER. In the case of the Brake coaches you will be presented with a 7 digit number. The first 4 digits are the coach number and the last 3 digits are the coach set number. If a blank entry is required for one digit just enter a capital A instead of a number. A blank space will appear on the coach instead of a digit. If in the case of a Loose Brake then just enter 3 A's in the last 3 spaces and no set number will appear on the ends of Brake coaches.

Sets were combined to make up longer trains as required. An instance is on Westcountry trains were a 2 set consisting of a SOBT and BC was attached to the rear of trains and dropped off at junction stations to continue on as a branch train.
