Heat StrokeSummer can be a very fun and enjoyable time of year, however the hot weather we love so much can also lead to dehydration and heat stroke.Dehydration and heat stroke are very real threats when the dog days of summer are upon us. Animals should always have fresh, clean water available, whether it's summer or the dead of winter. Carry portable water bowls on walks and on vacation or long car rides. Short-nosed dogs, like Pugs, Japanese Chins and Bulldogs, darker-coloured pets, animals that are overweight or ones that have thick coats (like Himalayan or Persian cats), are especially prone to heat stress. Watch out for these symptoms:
Excess lethargyDecreased urinationDry gumsRefusal to eatSunken eyesDecreased skin elasticity - gently pinch your pet's skin near the shoulder up into the shape of a tent; if the skin is slow to snap back, your pet may be dehydrated
What should you do if you think your pet is dehydrated? If they seem weak or off-balance, cool them with a hose or wet towels and get them to a veterinarian as quickly as possible.
Feeding Ferrets Ferrets are fascinating and fun creatures. They are playful, inquisitive and friendly, and they can be trained to use a litter tray and walk on a harness and lead. But what should you feed them?
Ferrets are true carnivores (meat eaters) and require a diet high in protein (30%) and low fibre. Good quality cat food, which is higher in protein than dog food, is suitable for ferrets or commercial ferret food. A kitten formula is suitable for ferrets up to 3-4 years of age and dry biscuits are preferable for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Fresh chicken wings can be given on a weekly basis to help clean the teeth. Care should be taken with raw meat, as it can be a source of salmonella poisoning. Never feed dairy products, chocolate, sweet biscuits, cooked bones and sausage mince.
Ferrets are very susceptible to hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) and should be fed small amounts several times a day or have food available to them at all times. As with all pets, fresh water should always be available in a suitable dish that cannot be tipped over.

Ray’s Reptile ReportReptiles as Alternative Pets - PART 1
No other animal in existence is more misunderstood than the reptile, to be more specific the snake. Until recent years the idea of owning an Australian Snake existed only in the minds of a few reptile enthusiasts (herpetologists). Snakes, tortoises, lizards, monitors and geckos could not be legally kept in private hands but with the introduction of the reptile licensing system by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, it is now possible to be a keeper/owner of almost any Australian Reptile.
Since my time in private practice began, it is amazing to see how many reptiles are now
being maintained and bred by private reptile keepers.
To many people, the idea of keeping a snake or lizard as a pet is impossible to conceive, but I believe most people would think differently if they truly disregarded the usual myths associated with reptiles.
Even a student who enjoys biology and science at school can keep and enjoy many Australian reptiles. Snakes are by far the most common kept reptiles. Monitors (lace monitor), Dragons (bearded), tortoises (longneck), skinks (blue tongue) and geckos are less commonly maintained.
Compared to mammals most snakes, and to a lesser extent other reptiles, can be kept easily and in good health with only a fraction of time spent caring for a mammalian pet, like cats, dogs and rabbits. The difference between keeping a dog or cat and a snake for a pet is immense as most reptiles are kept within a maintained enclosure except when handled, whilst most dogs and cats remain “free” to roam at will.
Snakes and reptiles do not require feedback or attention from their owners (unlike dogs or cats) and do not respond to training or education. This demonstrates the more highly evolved that mammals have become but that does not mean that reptiles are not well adapted creatures.
