We are well and truly into the margazhiseason. But there is so much that is part ofthis season that we felt we would anywayshare this with Mylaporeans who seek outways to soak in and make the best ofwhats on offer. So here we go -

Join A Bhajan GroupDuring the month of Margazhi,

several groups do the rounds of thestreets of Mylapore singing songs andbhajans. You can join any of them.

One such group is theShivanugraha Bhajan Group, firststarted by Papanasam Sivan in 1930.The group is now run by his daughterDr. Rukmini Ramani. She will not mindyour presence.

The core of the music and dance season is over.Now comes the street festival.

In the new week ahead, yet another edition of the annualMylapore festival funded wholly by Sundaram Finance willunfold in the heart of Mylapore.

The dates - January 9 to 12. And I hope you will mark themon your calendar, In your diary or in your handphone.

Even as I write this I take a call from our friends at theGovernment College of Art in Periamet, finalizing a group ofart students who will display and work on Pitchu Pillai Street.

Collector of books, postage and documents Winston isbriefing me on a Canon printer that can roll out small colourphotographs every 11 seconds - we want to the facility at thetwo weekend Kolam Contests on North Mada Street whereeach evening over 100 people, including children will designpulli kolams. Keepsake photos are a treasure.

And the Kolam Display is probably the mostphotographed event.

A well wisher calls - why have you forgotten theKokalikattai stilt dancers from Wallajah...o yes, how theydanced across the kolam carpet and took the crowds to the mainstage like cool Pied Pipers!

The Fest has its events. And people run them. We just haveto launch the sounds of the nadaswaram by the sishyas ofMylai Rajendran.

As Festival director I have moved from scheduling eventsto working with the community. This is the morechallenging task.

How do we get more and more people to relate to the Fest?My colleague Revathi got a good idea going - creating the

Mylapore Mosaic - women do handwork on a 1 ft by 1 ft clothwith a peacock motif. Twenty people have contributed this far;more are welcome to join this year-long project hich will stitchall the pieces together!

25 young and senior people raised their hands to volunteer -some have been with us since the kolam contests we organisedin 2001.

Dr Vatsala Narayanaswamy always gives space in her largehouse to hold Talks. Three families are willing to offer elaisapad at their homes next Sunday.

There is more to do. If you are a Mylaporean family keen tojoin the celebration come along. Buzz us now.

We can be proud of this event because it now gets attentionworldwide. One Argentinian, two French and a group ofAmericans have made time to be here.

The tradition of makingcribs at Christmastime is onthe wane. Like many othertraditions - sitting together tomake snacks or sittingaround the table to haveChristmas lunch.

To encourage the cribmaking tradition, MylaporeTimes organised a CribContest on the eve of thefestival and received entriesfrom 49 families, from SanThome, Foreshore Estate,R A Puram and Alwarpet.

There were also entriesfrom simple folks who live offthe kuppams ofSrinivasapuram and fromfour non Christians too.

The contest suggested tofamilies that they userecycled or easily availablematerials and be innovativein the crib design. So therewere teams which used cycletubes, packing materials and

On Sunday last, at afunction held at theArchdiocesan Pastoral Centrein San Thome, thecommunity of participantswere first shown a filmdocumenting all the cribs.

Worked by R Saravananand Parameshwaran, thetwo - part film ( now postedon Mylapore TV page onYouTube). The occasion - togrant the prizes won byfamilies who had created thebest cribs this Christmas inthis area.

49 families including tookpart in this contest whichwas judged by youth activist

Deepak, who is also knownfor creating large cribs withsound and light effects whenhe used to live inMandavelipakkam.

Over two days, Deepakand photographerR Saravanan criss-crossedthe area to look at andphotograph the cribs andDeepak chose five families forthe top prizes - a star-imagetrophy and a cheque.

The winners were -Gandhi, Johnson andCharles, Daniel Sebastian,Srikala and Nivedita andJagan and Joshua.

We had some guests fromMumbai last December and we tookthem around a few sabhas so theycould experience the season of musicand dance.

Our friends were not too muchinto the arts. But we created a nicemix for them - spent time at aconcert, a dance drama, tiffin at sabhacanteens, a temple visit and a walkdown the Marina Beach ( and abonus, a look around the city fromthe top of the Light House) and theywere excited after the two day visit.

I think it is time we charted a few greatideas to offer our guests and tourists in Decem-ber; they will love this.

Pained to see tulsi, flowergarlands dumped in bins

I am a resident ofMandavelipakkam. Itpains me a lot to see theTulsi and flowergarlands offered totemples by devoteesbeing dumped on theroad next to a garbagedump. This offeringmust be treated withgreat respect. One way is for the templeauthorities to pack them before disposing it orarranging with NGOs for collection and use fororganic compost. Secondly, devotees on theirpart can offer smaller garlands, as Lord Krishnahimself said that He is equally pleased with justone Tulsi. Perhaps we can start this practicein the new year?

Memories of Annapoorna,Khadi Bhavan andChildren’s Theatre

A recent Jottings column on the Annapoornachain of cafeterias took me down memory lane,to the 50s and 60s. Annapoorna was first openedat Victory House on Mount Road ( the presentpremises of VGP & Co.) where the food washygienically prepared and not served with barehands but with clean tongs.

It later shifted to the Govt. Estates where thestandards were not strict.

Also, Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan hereoffered great Gandhian food - hand poundedrice served with milk and honey.

I also recall times at Children’s Theatre;tickets for adults were Re.1 and for children,50 paise.

I used to take my children there everyweekend without fail.

Recent history ofAnnapoorna Cafetaria;why it had to close

This is with reference to a ‘Jottings’ columnin Mylapore Times. where you had written that ‘Sarojini Varadappan must be remembered forthe Annapoorna cafetarias.

I wish to elucidate on this. LeelavathiMunshi started these cafetarias in various citiesand these were successful in some cities,including Madras due to the dynamicmanagement. A few years ago, the then stategovernment started constructing the newAssembly Buildings and all existing structureswere unceremoniously knocked down. One finemorning a government rep told us that ourbuilding too would be knocked down the next

day. The land for thiscampus was given to us bythe government but we hadput up the building. Werequested the govt. to allotus an alternate site to runthe café which offeredfood items on a no loss noprofit basis OR to awardus compensation for thedemolition. Several

reminders were sent to the government; we evensubmitted a letter to the chief minister. After along wait we had perforce to close down thecafé, disband the cooks and the staff officially.
