PAGE 2 Countryside school plans learning garden By MIKE MONOSTRA The Sun Outside Countryside Elemen- tary School, a new mural sits abov e a barren piece of dirt and grass. The detailed, colorful mural serves as a pre lude of things to come. Countryside has begun plans for a learning garden where stu- dents will be able to plant and learn more about the environ- ment. The first piece of the garden was unveiled on June 6. Jackie Stack Lagakos of Per kins Center for the Arts created a mural at the future location of the garden. The mural sits alone in the back of the school, but in the coming months, the area around it will be transformed. Lagakos has done other murals for the school before. There are murals both inside and outside the school. The newest mural was done specifically with a future garden in mind. “The mural depicts wildlife,” said Kate Esaia, a parent at Coun- tryside who has been involved with the school’s green initia- tives. The mural took 13 weeks to fin- ish. A number of animals are d e- picted, including a barn owl, car- dinals, a rabbit, squirrel, possum, blue jay and timber snake. The mural will be the centerpiece of the school’s future learning garden. Work on the garden will start next school year.  please see MURAL, page 6

Hillside Elementary Schoolstudent Justin Koch may only bein fourth grade, but cancer has af-fected many people in his life.

Last year, when his teacher,Tracy Newhart, was diagnosedwith ovarian cancer, he took ini-tiative, setting up a Crush CancerWalk, Run, and Bike Race to raisemoney for the American CancerSociety.

“Last year, after Ms. Newhart

got sick, I just thought, 'Howabout we do a run?'” Koch said.

This year, the event became acommunity happening in theRamblewood Farms neighbor-hood. About 270 people attendedthe second annual race on June 1.More than $4,600 was raised, ahuge increase from the $1,100raised in 2013.

For Koch, seeing so many peo-ple come out in support of hiscause was a great feeling.

“It's very exciting,” he said.“Half of my friends are there and

some people who we've never metcame.”

“I was blown away that he actu-ally took the initiative and putthat race together,” Newhart said.“I was amazed at the communi-ty’s participation in it as well.”

This year, Koch dedicated therace to a few people. His grandfa-ther had died earlier in the yearfrom brain cancer, and he wantedto help those who were still fight-ing.

“He had taken a lot of medica-tions and it was very expensive,”Koch said.

Koch also dedicated the event

to 13-year-old Danny Hill fromMedford. Hill has been diagnosedwith bone cancer. The Koch fami-ly is acquainted with the Hills.Half of the money raised thisyear went to the Hill family.

The race has become so popu-lar thanks to the Ramblewood

Farms and Hillside Elementarycommunities. The event itself islow-scale, taking place in the localneighborhood. However, friends, classmates, neighbors and othershave continued to spread theword about the event.

“We turned it into a StudentCouncil event where we promot-ed it,” Newhart said. “Nine teach-ers came out.”

“The school was very support-ive,” said Justin's mother Mered-ith. “The school itself raised $800,which was amazing.”

Justin also did a lot of the pro-moting on his own.

“He handed out papers aroundthe class and he got a ton of peo-ple out there,” Meredith said.

The Koch family has alwaysbeen involved in community serv-ice. They go to places such as theRonald McDonald House to vol-unteer.

The cancer race wasn't eventhe first race Justin held. He or-ganized his first fundraiser afterHurricane Sandy and raised $400for the American Red Cross.

“I did a lesson in social studiesand I talked about what it is to bea good citizen,” Newhart said.

Justin's efforts are not goingunrecognized. Three days afterthe run, he received a citationfrom state Sen. Diane Allen con-gratulating him on his accom-plishments.

Putting the race together eachyear is something Justin loves todo. He said he is ready to put one

together again for next year.Newhart believes the event has

become a testament to how hardJustin works to help others.

“Justin is just an amazingyoung man in that he wants to ac-tually make a difference in theworld,” she said.
