Thanks to Mt. Laurel residentand Girl Scout Gold Award recipi-ent Victoria Ieradi, it’s now eveneasier for locals to learn moreabout one of South Jersey’s great-est natural resources – thePinelands.

For her Gold Award serviceproject, the now 18-year-oldLenape High School seniorhelped improve the Pine Tree Ed-ucational and EnvironmentalCenter in Tabernacle by research-ing, designing and installing 27educational signs detailing plantand animal species unique to thePinelands area.

Those same signs also containQR codes for visitors to scan withtheir mobile devices, which willthen direct them to a website alsofeaturing that information for fu-ture reference.

The Gold Award is the highest

achievement within the GirlScouts of the USA, earned by sen-ior and ambassador Girl Scouts.

According to the Girl Scouts of America, only 5.4 percent of eligi-ble Girl Scouts successfully earnthe Gold Award.

Ieradi said the idea to do some-thing at Pine Tree originatedfrom a playful challenge from herbrother, an Eagle Scout himself,who said she should do some-

thing for a Boy Scout camp be-cause it had always seemed BoyScouts were doing more projectsfor Girl Scout camps than GirlScouts were doing for Boy Scoutcamps.

Ieradi said her brother went tothe Cub Scout camp at Pine Treewhen he was younger, and whenshe returned as a freshman inhigh school looking for a project,she learned about the sign project

and thought it was a great idea.“I went to Pine Tree and they

already had the project approvedby the NJ Pinelands Commission,so the project was already set togo in, they just needed someone

to do it,” Ieradi said.Ieradi explored the area with

the camp ranger and learned thelocations they already had inmind for the signs, and when itcame time to dig, she just chose alocation that was the most con-venient for viewers to find.

For the information on thesigns, she had to contact plantand animal specialists, as well asresearch on her own regardingthe different plants and animalsthat inhabit the nine ecosystemsalong where the signs would go.

“I decided which informationwas the best to give viewers,”Ieradi said. “Everyone knowswhat a grey squirrel is, so I choseones that were a little more spe-cial to the area.”

The project totaled 1,280 hours,360 of which Ieradi completedherself.

Despite many girls leaving GirlScouts by the time they’re highschool age, Ieradi said she wanted

to get her Gold Award becauseshe had been in Girl Scouts sinceshe was in kindergarten and be-lieves Scouting to be an impor-tant aspect of her life.

“I knew it would be somethingbeneficial for me in my future,”Ieradi said. “I knew it was a greataccomplishment that I wanted toget done.”

The following reports are on file withthe Mt. Laurel Police Department:

On Nov. 6 at 2:40 a.m., Mt. Laurel policeconducted a motor vehicle stopon Fellowship Road near Route73. During the stop, officers ar-rested a male, age 50, of HaddonTownship. He was charged withdriving while intoxicated andreleased pending a court hearing.

On Nov. 5 at 4 a.m., Mt. Laurel police lo-cated a vehicle in the parking lot of a hotelon Fellowship Road that had been reportedstolen out of Merchantville. The investiga-tion led to the arrest of a guest of the hotel,a female, age 21, of Mt. Laurel. She was ar-rested for an outstanding warrant and alsocharged with receiving stolen property.She was committed to the BurlingtonCounty Jail.

On Nov. 4 at 3:20 p.m., Mt. Laurel policeconducted a motor vehicle stop on Foster-

town Road near Route 38. During the stop,officers arrested a male, age 61, of Mt. Lau-rel. He was charged with driv-ing while intoxicated andreleased pending a court hear-ing.

On Nov. 4 at 6 a.m., Mt. LaurelPolice responded to a room at hotel onRoute 73 for a disturbance. The investiga-tion led to the arrest of a male, age 46, of Philadelphia. He was charged with solicit-ing prostitution and released pending acourt hearing. A female, age 35, of Mt. Lau-rel was also arrested for multiple criminalwarrants. She was committed to theBurlington County Jail.

On Nov. 3 at 3:05 a.m., Mt. Laurel policeconducted a motor vehicle stop on Fellow-

ship Road near Church Road. During thestop, officers arrested a male, age 31, of Mt.

Laurel Road. He was charged with drivingwhile intoxicated and released pending acourt hearing.

Three vending machines at the Sunocoservice station on Route 38 were forciblyentered on Nov. 2 at approximately 2 a.m.Cash was stolen from each machine. Twotires were also taken from the property.

An investigation into the shoplifting of $1,344 worth of merchandise from Ulta onNixon Drive on Oct. 25 led to the issuanceof an arrest warrant for a suspect, a male,age 55, of Morristown. On Nov. 2 at 8:25p.m. Mt. Laurel police took custody of thesuspect who had been arrested by Morris-town Police. The suspect was committed tothe Burlington County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail no 10 percent option.

can Express are touting the impor-tance of shopping local. The companystarted the now well-known SmallBusiness Saturday – the Saturdayafter Thanksgiving, the day afterBlack Friday – in 2010 to promotesmall businesses. Studies have found

that almost $6 billion is spent at smallbusinesses on that day each year!

A vibrant and successful local busi-ness community has a trickle-down ef-fect on our own pockets. Just think:

• Successful local businesses makeother businesses want to locate in ourtown.

• More businesses equals more rata-bles, which, in turn, lowers our taxes.

• The more ratables we have, and thelower our taxes are, the more attrac-

tive our community becomes to futureresidents.

It all starts with you. If you have achoice between buying a gift at a bigbox store or a local mom-and-pop, sup-port your neighbors by making thatpurchase locally.

Our small businesses are alreadyfighting an uphill battle against themarketing dollars of the big boxstores. Let’s all help them out by open-ing their doors and opening our wal-lets to them. We can make it a trulyhappy holiday season.

The Rowan College at Burling-ton County Foundation will cele-brate a winter wonderland-themed holiday auction, its firstas RCBC, Friday, Nov. 20 at the En-terprise Center, to raise moneyfor scholarships for RCBC stu-dents in need.

“This event is a major reasonwe can provide need-based schol-arships that allow students tocomplete their degrees and im-prove their careers,” said RCBCPresident Paul Drayton. “The an-nual auction is very important toour college, the foundation andmost importantly to our stu-dents.”

The auction, which is actuallyin its 27th year and serves as thefoundation’s principal fundraiser,will offer guests a mobile biddingoption this year in addition to the

chance to bid on complete “expe-riences.” There will be about 200gift items up for bid, including anApple iWatch, jewelry, trips, auto-graphed sports memorabilia andthe season’s top toys.

“Everyone who purchases aticket, bids on an item or donatesto the foundation will be helpingfund the priceless gift of an edu-cation for an RCBC student,” saidRCBC Foundation Fund Develop-ment Committee Chair and Holi-day Auction Event Co-Chair AmyWebb.

Last year’s holiday auctionraised about $75,000 for founda-tion scholarships and welcomed

about 300 guests. With the addi-tion of the mobile bidding optionthis year, the holiday auctionevent committee is hoping to sur-pass last year’s number.

“Each year, hundreds of RCBCstudents rely on the foundation’sfinancial assistance to help themmeet their goal of achieving aneducation,” said RCBC Founda-tion Acting Executive DirectorBrittany Quintana. “In the lastthree academic years, the founda-tion has awarded nearly $1 mil-lion in scholarships to students inneed.”

Tickets for the foundation’sHoliday Auction are $125 and in-clude hors d’oeuvres, holidayfood stations, dessert, open barand bid number. Patron ticketscan be purchased for $150 andalso include recognition in the

Ieradi even received a procla-mation from the Mt. LaurelTownship Council commendingher on the achievement at its Nov.9 meeting.

In addition to her Gold Award,Ieradi also previously receivedThe Silver Award in the Ventur-ing program of the Boy Scouts of America, which was the highestaward in the program through

The club has raised about$135,000 thus far and is countingon two upcoming projects to pro-vide large revenues. The club isputting together a “Lenape Turf Kickoff Social” to fundraise forthe field. The event is scheduledfor Nov. 20 from 8 p.m. to mid-night at the Lenola Fire Hall inMoorestown.

The night will consist of food,drinks, music, dancing, a 50/50raffle and auctions that will in-clude prizes such as PhiladelphiaEagles tickets, Philadelphia Fly-ers tickets, an iPad and more.Tickets will cost $40 per personand guests must be 21 years of age or older.

Another large project the

group is working on a grantthrough the NFL that is spon-sored by the Philadelphia Eaglesthat could be worth up to $200,000.This development was born whenMt. Laurel resident and vice pres-ident of ticket and fan servicesfor the Philadelphia Eagles, LainiDelawter, saw an ad for the Turf Club on the MLU website.

“She got us involved in the run-ning for this grant,” Shelko said.“She’s really spearheaded thatproject.”

The club has to have all of itspaperwork for the grant in byFebruary, and the NFL will decidewho is most deserving of themoney shortly after that.

Along with these projects, thegroup is still counting heavily ondonations.

The plan is to create a wall atDriscoll Stadium displaying thenames of donors after the newfield is installed. Donors will re-ceive different honors based onthe amount of money they do-nate. There are several levels of donation classes, ranging from

the “white” group for the peopleor companies who donate $500, tothe “diamond” group for the peo-ple or companies who donate$100,000.

The turf field will be installedinside Driscoll Stadium and willbe lined for all field sports. Thenew field will also be available tothe Mt. Laurel community duringoff hours, similar to how the cur-rent field is.

The construction for the newfield will not interfere with anysport schedules, and the trackand bleachers will not be affected.

Donations can be mailed toLenape Athletic Foundation/Turf, 235 Hartford Road, MedfordNJ 08055. The committee has alsoset up a website, www.lenapeturf.com, where residents will be ableto make a donation online.Lenape Turf has a Facebook pagewhere the latest news on the proj-ect will be posted.
