MT. PINATUBO

• Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano; it is also a conical volcano, built up by many layers of hardened lava, tephra, pumice, and volcanic ash. Stratovolcanoes are sometimes called “composite volcanoes” because of their composite layered structure built up from outpourings of eruptive materials. They are the most common type of volcanoes, in comparison to shield volcanoes. Two other stratovolcanoes are Krakatoa and Vesuvius.

• Mount Pinatubo is in the Philippines located in the Cabusilan Mountains The eruption of Mount Pinatubo was the second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century, second only to the 1912 eruption of Mt. Novarupta in Alaska.

• The effects of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption were not limited to the area around the volcano. The eruption of Mt. Pinatubo affected weather around the globe. Huge quantities of particles from the volcano tall ash cloud injected into the global wind system in the stratosphere

MT. PINATUBO: NEGATIVE EFFECTS

• A reported 847 people were killed by the eruption. Mostly, by rooftops collapsing under the weight of accumulated wet ash. After the eruption, about 500,000 people continued to live within 25 miles of the mountain.

MT. PINATUBO: POSITIVE EFFECTS

• Tourism: Many active and dormant volcanoes bring hundreds of thousands of tourists to those areas each year. In regard to transportation, restaurants, shops, and hotels, this tourism generated a lot of employment. Volcanoes can create new land for human habitation.

• Building Materials: Granite, which is used in the construction industry, is formed by volcanic activity

• Fertile Soils: Volcanic soils are very fertile. These rich soils are called laterite soils and are rich in minerals.

• Scientists from the US Geological Survey and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology now closely monitor Mount Pinatubo.
