Mount Roskill War Memorial UpgradeWe can be very proud that it was our Society that instigated this upgrade. What was an unattractive and rather sad area has been upgraded so we will have a space that will meet Anzac Day ceremonies well into the future. It is now a fitting memorial to the men of our community who gave their lives in the service of their country. As part of the upgrade the men listed below, who were killed in action, will finally have their names recorded for all to see. We are hoping there will also be other material for each man, permanently displayed in the Freyberg Room in the hall.

MAJOR ROBERT CARPENTER NOTABLE SERVICE RENDERED.

The death has occurred at Onehunga of Major Robert Carpenter, N.Z.S.C. Born in 1850 at Gloucester, he enlisted at the age of 16 in the Royal Marine Light Infantry and served with that famous unit in China, Japan and Cape of Good Hope. Then, in 1581, he transferred to the Army and was attached to the Middlesex Regiment at Hounslow until 1894. About this time in New Zealand volunteering was at a low ebb and nowhere more so than in Auckland. Colonel Fox, the commandant, sent to England for an instructor and Regimental-Sergeant-Major Carpenter, as he then was, was appointed. He was described as " a splendid warrant officer and the best drill instructor in the British Army." Arriving at a time when there were only seven volunteer and one cadet company in the whole district, he set to work to build up the movement. Spurred on by his enthusiasm, more and more companies were enrolled, until in 1897 there was an efficient force of about 4000 officers and

men, artillery, mounted, navals, engineers, infantry and ambulance. Strict as a disciplinarian, with a meticulously correct knowledge of the drill book and intimate acquaintance with all questions of etiquette and correct procedure, he was the final court of appeal for officers and men. To Major Carpenter's influence has been credited the grounding that made possible in Auckland the success of the territorial system and the staffing of the first Expeditionary Force. Before this he had gained well-earned promotion to the Staff Corps, where, first as captain and then as major, he helped to smooth the reconstruction of the New Zealand Army until he retired in 1912. For eight and a-half years he managed the Veterans' Home, and then lived quietly in retirement at Onehunga. Major Carpenter is survived by his wife, six sons and three daughters. There are 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One son, Lieutenant David Carpenter, was killed at Gallipoli when serving with the 3rd Auckland Company

ANZAC DAY

Anzac Day occurs on 25 April. It commemorates all New Zealanders killed in war and also honours returned servicemen and women. The date itself marks the anniversary of the landing of New Zealand and Australian soldiers – the Anzacs – on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. The aim was to capture the Dardanelles, the gateway to the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. At the end of the campaign, Gallipoli was still held by its Turkish defenders.

Thousands lost their lives in the Gallipoli campaign: 87,000 Turks, 44,000 men from France and the British Empire, including 8500 Australians. To this day, Australia also marks the events of 25 April. Among the dead were 2779 New Zealanders, almost one in four of those who served on Gallipoli.

It may have led to a military defeat, but for many New Zealanders then and since, the Gallipoli landings meant the beginning of something else – a feeling that New Zealand had a role as a distinct nation, even as it fought on the other side of the world in the name of the British Empire.

Anzac Day was first marked in 1916. The day has gone through many changes since then. The ceremonies that are held at war memorials up and down New Zealand, or in places overseas where New Zealanders gather, remain rich in tradition and ritual befitting a military funeral.
