You’re Not Good EnoughChris McCurley
I hear it all the time. In fact, I just heard it the other day. It’s even been said of me a few times. It’s the phrase–“He/she is a good person.” Without question, to be called a “good person” is an endearing compliment. We would all like to be thought of as “good.” It’s a lot better than the alternative–evil. But what does it really mean to be “good?” And should goodness be the goal?First of all, we must admit that human goodness is based on human-to-human comparisons, which means the standard is highly subjective. The qualities that one person admires in me may be quite unappealing to someone else. Our standard of goodness constantly fluctuates. We need a different standard; a better standard. One that’s more precise. One that’s absolute. In fact, I would suggest that goodness is the wrong standard. Rather than seeking to be “good,” we should all seek to be something more. Each and every one of us should strive to be godly. The Apostle Paul wrote: “There is none righteous, not even one (Rom. 3:10).” He goes on to state, “[F]or all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23).” Paul’s words imply a standard. The standard is righteousness or godliness. According to Paul, no one meets that standard, at least not on their own. Without Christ we are no good. Even the best person, misses the mark without a Savior. Being “good” is not enough. Being “good” is not the goal. Being “good” won’t get you to heaven. If we’re good enough on our own, then Christ didn’t need to die.Goodness is the wrong starting point. This life isn’t about good or bad. It’s about life or death. Christ didn’t come to make bad people good. He came to make dead people live. If this life were simply about being good, then how we live would be the most important thing. But, as I’ve already pointed out, no matter how well we live, we’ll never live up to the standard of righteousness without a Savior. How we live should be motivated by who we live for. How we live is dictated by who we follow. Jesus Christ defines the way that we should live. If we love Him, we will keep His commandments (Jn. 14:15).The issue is not whether I am “good,” as determined by some worldly criteria. The question is not, “Am I good enough?” The answer to that question is a resounding, “No!” Goodness is not the goal. Godliness is. The proper question that we should all ask ourselves is, “Am I alive or dead spiritually? Have I been washed in the blood of Christ?”
