Car battery care and life expectancy

Discovering you have a dead battery upon turning the key in the ignition is one of the most inconvenient, yet common, occurrences for motorists.

The life expectancy for your car battery is typically 4–6 years. Several factors determine how long your battery will last, for example weather conditions, vehicle type and driving habits.

There are, however, several key pointers you can utilise to help increase the life expectancy of your car battery.

Why is my battery flat?• Make sure to check all of the electrical

connections and ensure the battery is kept clean and dry. If corrosion has built up over time, baking soda in a water solution and an old toothbrush is ideal to clean the battery terminals. Just make sure to remove the negative terminal first. When reapplying the terminals, connect the positive terminal first.

• Frequent, short car trips contribute to an earlier lifespan for car batteries. It takes roughly eight hours of continuous driving for the alternator to fully charge the battery. If the battery infrequently receives a full charge, strong crystalline deposits can form on the negative plates and consequently prevents the battery from charging properly – this is called sulphation. If short car trips are a part of your daily routine, avoid using electric auxiliary controls unnecessarily – this will prolong the lifespan of the battery and also save on fuel.

• Cold weather makes it more difficult for an already weakened battery to hold its charge. Storing your car in a garage during spells

of cold weather should keep the battery warmer and therefore easier to charge.

• If your car isn’t in use for long periods of time, removing the negative battery connection during periods of non-use assists in the longevity of your battery. Just make sure to reconnect the terminal before attempting to start the car.

• The electrolyte (acid/water) solution levels may be low. If your battery is not maintenance-free, you may need to adjust the solution levels. If the levels are low, be sure to use the necessary safety precautions when you are handling battery acid. Only use distilled water, or you will damage the battery.

Charging your battery• The type of charger you own is important

in the safety of charging your vehicle. Make sure you choose a charger specific to the needs of your car from an MTA member.

• When charging your car, it is not only safer, but better for your battery to opt for the slow charging method. A fast charge increases the potential of overcharging your battery and can create permanent damage.

Replacement and recycling• Your local garage or recycling centre will

take your car battery, usually for a small fee. It is illegal to dispose of your car battery along with household waste due to it’s toxic nature.

• If the battery is still in reasonable condition, it may be reconditioned for use, or it’s components will be extracted and melted down for use in the future.

Keeping your car battery fully charged means your battery will have a longer lifespan and use energy more efficiently.

With a Drivesouth feature on towing scheduled, Catherine Pattison thought it was an ideal time to try out Isuzu’s new hearty hauler, the MU-X.

Winter is not the most conducive season to head upriver in the Southern Lakes, so we hitched on the jet boat and decided to take it for a landlocked tiki tour instead.

Choosing a winding, undulating road to test the MU-X’s pulling power, we set off towards The Neck in Lake Hawea.

The MU-X is a serious towing contender and can pull 3000kg on a braked trailer, which means trundling our 750kg minnow along should have caused it no consternation at all.

And it didn’t. I hardly noticed we had a boat behind, but I did note the pleasingly low rpms on the dash in front of me. Cruise control was set at the legal trailer-pulling speed of 90kmh and the revs sat at 1600, making for an economical tow trip. Powered by Isuzu’s own 3-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, the MU-X claims a fuel economy of 8.4l/100km.

The powerplant produces 130kW and 380Nm between 1800rpm and 2800rpm and is mated to an automatic transmission.

About that pairing. I can bear a fair amount of diesel clatter in the cabin, but the gear changes were accompanied by a rising roar that got a little irksome on the open road.

Noise aside, the MU-X is a comfortable, relaxing ride and acquitted itself well travelling up Treble Cone skifield’s steep gravel access road.

Off-tarmac is where the MU-X takes its cues from its tough cousin, the D-Max ute. Not only does it borrow similar styling with the

wedge-shaped front and flared wheel arches, it adopts the D-Max’s durability. Should you wish to forgo cityscape for countryside, there is a front steel plate skid/splash shield and steel plate guards that protect the sump and transfer case.

The body armour came in handy when I was testing the MU-X’s off-road capabilities with some farming friends.

to turn around on the tight, slippery track, with a bank behind and drop-off in front, let’s just say we were grateful for the substantial 230mm ground clearance.

Another wee blessing the MU-X provides is a 10-inch roof mounted drop-down rear monitor. Drop a DVD into the audio sound system (which includes USB and Bluetooth, plus audio streaming) and you have guaranteed hush from small people in the back seats.

You can fit a lot of small and even large people in the seven-seater MU-X. The splitfold rear seats in the second and third rows mean you can use it as a five-seater with whopping boot space or setup the third row and fit in some extra bodies.

Rest assured they need never go thirsty as there is a grand total of 14 cupholders throughout the cabin.

The interior itself is unfussy and practical, in a simple charcoal black, with smart leather seats.

Isuzu has brought the MU-X to New Zealand as a single, top-spec model retailing for $65,990. For that you get a raft of specifications including 17-inch alloy wheels, chrome power mirrors, aluminium side steps, rear privacy glass, roof rails, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, climate control air conditioning, sat nav, a reversing camera and spare power outlets in the glovebox and rear cargo area.
