    1 SCOPE

    1.1 This standard prescribes the requirements and methods of tests for steel and zinc alloyclosures used on drums of nominal capacity of 200 litres with fixed ends [see IS 1783 ( Part 1 ) :1993 Drums, large, fixed ends: Part 1 Grade A drums ( third revision ) and IS 1783 ( Part 2 ) :1988 Drum, large, fixed ends: Part 2 Grade B Drums ( third revision) ] .

    1.2 Two nominal sizes of closures, 50 mm and 20 mm have been covered in this standard.

    2 REFERENCES

    2.1 The following Indian Standards contain provisions, which through reference in this text,constitute provisions of this standard. At the time of the publication, the editions indicated belowwere valid. All the standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreement based on thisstandard are encouraged to investigate the possibility applying the most recent edition of thestandard.

    FOREWORD

    This standard was first published in 1971 and subsequently revised in 1977, 1984 and1998. While reviewing the standard in the light of experience gained during these years,the committee decided to revise it to bring in line with the present practices beingfollowed by the Indian and overseas country.

    In this revision following modification have been proposed .

    h1 = 15.800.5mm

    Dimension shall beshown from top ofthe neck to top ofbase.

    h1 shall be15.800.5mm

    This dimension is more critical andrelevant for manufacture of the flangeand for insertion to the drum top. InIS-1784 this critical dimension has tobe derived from the total height andbase thickness, which leads topossibilities of variation 15.40 to 17.0mmIn the ISO-15750 the critical neckheight is specified as 15.80.5. Thisgives a variation of 15.30mm to

    16.30mm, which is desired. However,the dimension of 15.3 is lower than15.40 as new technologies allow forlower thickness of material. Topromote this saving of material, we

    recommend that BIS also incorporate15.30 as the lower limit. Since ourrevision is subsequent to the ISOrevision, we could consider reductionof base thickness t1 from max. 3.2 to3.0mm.

    h1 = 12.900.5mm

    Dimension shall beshown from top ofthe neck to top ofbase.

    h1 shall be12.900.5mm

    As in 2" Flange the critical neck heightshould be indicated. Since most of themajor drum manufacturers are usingtandem die set for insertion & thecritical neck height of 2" flange isreduced by 0.9mm, the same shallapply to 3/4" Flange. Thus neckheight shall be 12.900.5mm as inISO-15750.

    ISO-15750 is silent onno. of threads.

    The requirementmay be removed.

    Since from closure point of view itcould even be just one threads all thenecessary force is taken by onethread.

    This standard has been issued in two parts, the other part in the series is:

    For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, thefinal value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded offin accordance with IS 2:1960 `Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised), the number ofsignificant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specifiedvalue in this standard.
