Cloud computing, mobile technologies and the consumerisation of IT are key technology trends driving the changes in how enterprise data is accessed, used and shared. Changes in the mobile computing landscape and the new era of connected devices are changing the way we work. The concept of ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) is a growing trend, with increasing use of personal mobile devices in the workplace. Whilst BYOD promises many benefits, such as greater innovation, better work-life balance and improved productivity, there are also concerns and a number of issues to be considered. The thought of not being able to completely control every single device poses a potential security nightmare for IT managers but at the same time, the IT department is coming under increasing pressure to make corporate data available regardless of how it is accessed. Organisations need to look at how to evolve with these changes by providing a secure way and putting the right controls in place to manage and protect what they cannot directly control. Traditional security models and corporate policies have to evolve to cope with this new and emerging IT environment. This then begs the questions ‘how can organisations implement controls to securely authenticate and authorise employee access via their mobile devices to corporate data?’ ‘What steps should organisations take to avoid a security breach as a result of employees using personal mobile devices to access corporate data?’ Mobile Management The proliferation of mobile devices in the workplace has made mobile security a top priority on the IT agenda. With the corporate network and data left exposed to serious risk, Mobile Device Management (MDM) software offers a way to address BYOD policy management. Enterprise mobility security solutions enable the IT department to define and implement network access and security policies that are aligned with corporate IT policies.

A lot of confusion still reigns in ‘handset world’ – the challenge of accommodating multiple device types, various operating platforms and applications on a centralised platform will prove difficult for most organisations. Neither is it practical nor cost-effective to support every single operating system and device model. MDM can be used to provision and control multiple devices with a variety of operating systems, including Blackberry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile, iPhone, iPad and Android.

Features of MDM include: the ability to manage devices remotely, configure corporate email settings, protect data with encryption, remote lock and wipe features, restrict application access and even track a device location. But beware, not all device operating systems support the entire feature available in the latest MDM solutions. However, overall MDM can greatly reduce the associated support costs and business risks. Leakage and Loss Controlling the use of data and data loss will be a critical security challenge. Data leakage is set to be prevalent with employees more likely to lose corporate data now they are using their own mobile devices. What happens when employees lose their device containing sensitive corporate information or an employee leaves the company with their device and the data on it with them? Or what about when company data accessed is automatically backed-up in the consumer cloud – a common feature on most of these personal devices. In all of these scenarios, data has been leaked and a data breach has occurred. Data Leakage Prevention (DLP) is a solution that can be used to detect and protect potential data breaches using security measures, access control and data encryption across mobile platform and devices. Here to Stay In short BYOD is happening; it might be a nightmare for IT departments but often it’s the senior executives who are asking to use their own devices in the workplace and it’s difficult to say no to senior management. Those who take a holistic approach across the organisation by integrating these best practices and the right technology into their BYOD model, as well as educating end-users, will stand the best chance of implementing a successful BYOD policy that doesn’t compromise on security and compliance, but actually improves productivity.
