    Introduction

Invented and developed by Eli Whitney.

Although crude, these machines assisted man in maintaining

accuracy and uniformity while duplicating parts that could notbe manufactured with the use of a file.

    Operations

Milling operations may be classified under four general

    headings as follows:

Face Milling Plain or Slab Milling

    Angular Milling

    Form Milling

    FACE MILLING

Face milling, also called end milling and side milling,

is machining surfaces perpendicular to the axis of the

    cutter.

    Plain Milling or Slab Milling

In plain milling machining machine flat surfaces

which are parallel to the axis of the cutter.

    Angular Face Milling

Angular face milling is a machining in which machine

flat surfaces which are at an inclination to the axis of

    the cutter.

    Angular Milling

In Angular milling machining is being done at a

specific angle to draw out specific shapes.

    Gang Milling

Gang milling is the term applied to an operation in

which two or more milling cutters are used together

    Straddle Milling

When two or more parallel vertical surfaces are machined at a

single cut, the operation is called straddle milling. Straddle

milling is accomplished by mounting two side milling cutters

on the same arbor, set apart so that they straddle the

    workpiece.

    Form Milling.

Form milling is the process of machining special contours

composed of curves and straight lines, or entirely of curves, at

a single cut. This is done with formed milling cutters, shaped

to the contour to be cut, or with a fly cutter ground for the

    job.

    Woodruff Keyway Milling.

Keyways are machined grooves of different shapes, cut along

the axis of the cylindrical surface of shafts, into which keys are

fitted to provide a positive method of locating and driving

    members mounted on the shafts.

    Gear Cutting.

Gear teeth are cut on the milling machine using formed

milling cutters called involutes gear cutters. These cutters are

manufactured in many pitch sizes and shapes for different

    numbers of teeth per gear

    Drilling And Boring.

Drilling is to make a hole and boring is to enlarge a hole .

    Speeds For Milling Cutters

The speed of a milling cutter is the distance in feet per minute

that each tooth travels as it cuts its chips.

    Cutting Oils.

The major advantage of a cutting oil is that it reduces

frictional heat, thereby giving longer life to the cutting edges

of the teeth. The oil also serves to lubricate the cutter face

and to flush away the chips, consequently reducing the

    possibility of marring the finish.

    COMPUTERISE NUMERICAL

CONTROL Most CNC milling machines (also called machining centers) are

computer controlled vertical mills with the ability to move the

spindle vertically along the Z-axis. This extra degree of

freedom permits their use in die sinking, engraving

applications, and 2.5D surfaces such as relief sculptures.

When combined with the use of conical tools or a ball nose

cutter, it also significantly improves milling precision without

impacting speed, providing a cost-efficient alternative to most

    flat-surface hand-engraving work.

    CNC Turning Is Beneficial

Mankind is continually looking for ways to make his

undertakings more efficient and productive. You cannot

dispute that modern technology gives us the hindsight to

eliminate redundant operations on an industrial scale,

thereby saving on production costs. One such method is CNC

turning. CNC turning is a facile method of machining by which

    parts are cut

    CNC Machining Automates

Industry The introduction of CNC machining radically changed the

manufacturing industry. CNC is an abbreviation that means

computer numerical control. This computer controller reads

G-code and M-code, transmitting commands and driving a

machine tool. It numerically directs a cutting tool in the work

    envelope of a machine tool

    CNC Machine Functioning

CNC machining, as a recent innovation in the

sphere of current technologies, may be of

great interest for those who intend to turn to

the help of CNC machines. Generally CNCmachines are combined into one station called

a "cell." Today, they are directly controlled

from files created by CAM software packages.
