8.1 VCI Does Not Pass Power On Self-Test (POST)

Most Likely Cause:• Internal problem in the VCI.

Recommendations:• Connect the VCI to a PC using USB and perform the recov-

ery procedure.

8.2 VCI Error LED Lights After Power On

Most Likely Cause:• A problem has been detected during power on.

Recommendations:• Power down the VCI and verify that it has the same problem

when you power up again.• Connect the VCI to a PC using USB and perform the recov-

ery procedure.

8.3 VCI Fails to Power UpThe VCI should power up as soon as external power is applied. If the VCI does not turn on, first check the cable connections. Try supplying power to the VCI from two different power sources— the vehicle DLC connector and the USB connector.

Recommendations:• Check that the cables are securely attached to the VCI and

the connector pins are clean.• If connecting to the vehicle DLC connector, try powering

from the USB connector.

• If powering from USB, try powering from the vehicle DLC connector.

8.4 Vehicle LED is Blinking RedIf the MTS 6531 does not detect 12V on Pin 16 of the DLC cable, the MTS 6531 will inform the user by automatically turning on and blinking the Vehicle LED red. This condition might be seen if the MTS 6531 is only powered by a 5V USB connection or if the DLC Cable has accidently been displaced from the vehicle Data Link Connector and is powered from the backup capacitor. When the MTS 6531 detects 12V on Pin 16, the Vehicle LED will stop blinking red.

Recommendations:• Ensure 12V is applied to Pin 16 of the DLC cable

8.5 MTS 6531 Speaker is BeepingIf the MTS 6531 is performing diagnostic services for the PC and does not detect 12V on Pin 16 of the DLC cable, the MTS 6531 will inform the user of the loss of power by beeping the speaker. The MTS 6531 will continue to beep until the backup capacitor is drained. When the MTS 6531 detects 12V on Pin 16, the speaker will stop beeping.

Recommendations:• Ensure 12V is applied to Pin 16 of the DLC cable during a

diagnostic session

8.6 VCI Turns Off Immediately When Discon-nected from the Vehicle During a Diagnostic Session

If the MTS 6531 does not remain on during cranking or DLC dis-connect, there may be a problem charging the internal capaci-tor.The MTS 6531 should remain powered up if power is lost during engine cranking or after it is disconnected from power (vehicle DLC) during a diagnostic session. The MTS 6531 speaker will beep to notify the user that power has been lost unexpectedly during the diagnostic session.

Recommendations:• Check for 12V power supply at the vehicle DLC connector• Ensure that the MTS 6531 has been connected to the

vehicle DLC for at least 90 seconds to charge the internal capacitor.

8.7 MTS 6531 Checkmark LED is BlinkingIf the internal temperature of the MTS 6531 has exceeded the maximum limit, the MTS 6531 will automatically turn off the wireless adapter. This will be visible to the user by the Check-mark LED blinking. When the internal temperature of the MTS 6531 lowers to an acceptable value, the wireless adapter will be re-enabled for wireless communication.

Recommendations:• Move the MTS 6531 to a cooler location near the vehicle

12. Appendix

12.1 Installing Optional SD Card into MTS 6531

The standard MTS 6531 VCI kits do not include an SD card. However, certain customer applications require an SD card. Please consult with the supplier of your application software. If your application requires an SD card, follow the instructions below.

The MTS 6531 VCI will check during the boot-up process for the presence of an SD card formatted with "ext4" file system. If an "ext4" formatted SD card is found, the MTS 6531 VCI boots-up as normal and the SD card is ready for use. If an SD card is found at boot-up which is not formatted with "ext4", the VCI automatically begins formatting the SD card without any input from the user. Important note, any data on the SD card will be erased during the format process.

See instructions below for how to install and configure a Micro SD Card:

1. Make sure no power is supplied to the MTS 6531 VCI2. Remove rubber end boot at bottom of the VCI. Rubber boot

is identified with WiFi logo and is opposite the DLC.3. Verify no SD Card is installed.4. Insert the Micro SD card with the gold contacts facing-up in

to the SD card slot. (See Figure 1).

5. When installed correctly, the SD card will be flush with the VCI plastic housing (See Figure 2).

6. Apply power to the VCI USB cable from PC to VCI or vehicle DLC.

7. The PC LED will flash green for the duration of the formatting process (See Figure 3)• This is the only feedback the user will receive indicating

the SD card formatting is in process. • If the MTS 6531 boot time seems abnormally long and

the PC LED is flashing green; this is normal SD Card formatting behavior.

• The SD card formatting process takes about 1 minute.Note, formatting time may vary depending on the SD card size. The PC LED will flash green for the duration of the formatting process.

8. Once the SD card has been formatted for "ext4", the MTS 6531 VCI will boot normally without interruptions from that point forward. • The extended boot-up time required to format the SD

card will only occur during the initial boot-up cycle of the

MTS 6531 VCI. Normal boot-up times will be experienced in subsequent power-up cycles.
