Chairman’s MessagePNG – 40 YEARS ONA time for change

On Wednesday September 16, 2015, throughout our country, men women and children came together to celebrate a signicant achievement.

No doubt, the National anthem “O Arise All You Sons of This Land" rang out loudly from the Highlands to the Coast, and across the Islands of this wonderful country we call Papua New Guinea – to mark a signicant milestone - PNG’s 40th Independence Anniversary.

A lot has changed on the journey since PNG gained independence in 1975, and as part of this journey, Melanesian Trustee Services Limited, MTSL, is proud to have been associated with the nation’s business development aspirations.

From humble beginnings, MTSL has been able to grow its business, through carefully thought-out investments in a range of industries that, to this day, continue to be of value to the people.

Many of these investments play a big part in the lives of every Papua New Guinean. But challenges still remain – challenges that demand a new way of thinking to overcome them, a determination to be even better.

Earlier this year, I was appointed as MTSL’s Executive Director – a role that comes with its own unique set of challenges and responsibilities.

My fellow board members share my excite-ment as we examine ways of ensuring your investments bring greater returns in the near future as we continue to "grow" the value of your portion of the investment fund. It is an exciting time with many oppor-tunities for good investments.

THANK YOU for continuing to support MTSL, and we look forward to bringing you more reasons to celebrate in the near future. We are committed to ensuring the contin-ued success of MTSL, and PNG.

Once again, on behalf of the Board of MTSL, we would like to congratulate each and every citizen of this country on the occasion of the nation’s 40th Indepen-dence Anniversary.

God Bless Papua New Guinea.

Unit Holders to benefit from MiBANKMelanesian Trustee Services Limited, MTSL, has taken another big step in assisting its thirty thousand Pacic Balanced Fund, PBF, Unit Holders to benet from banking services provided by Nationwide Micro Bank, MiBank. As of August 2015, MiBank has opened Savings Accounts for all veried Unit Holders of PBF.

Through these accounts, PBF Unit Holders can receive their yearly dividends. They will also be able to use their unit certicates as collaterals for personal loans.

Furthermore, PBF information and documents can be accessed via these MiBank accounts. This incentive is aimed at assisting unit holders to be more self-sustaining and active players in the Governments SME program.

According to PBF Acting General Manager Investment’s Jerry Kootz, this is part of bring-ing PBF’s services closer to its unit holders, wherever they are.

“All veried unit holders are urged to go to the nearest MiBank branch and identify

MTSL CEO Kennedy Wemin with the Nationwide Micro Bank Chairmain Ray Clark during the announcement last year.

On August 27 and 28, 2015, the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre became a hive of activity with the staging of the Papua New Guinea Advantage Investment Summit.

Over two hundred delegates from across the business sector within PNG, and abroad, met to discuss issues affecting business in PNG, but more importantly also highlight the tremendous opportunities that are on offer in PNG.

Melanesia Trustee Services Limited, MTSL, and Pacic Balanced Fund, PBF also attend-ed this event. - This was one of the many events that PBF has participated in since its inception.

The team led by Executive Chairman Robert Igara and CEO Kennedy Wemin, used the opportunity to showcase PBF to the business community and establish contacts and networking.

Day 1 – Investment

Day one focused on Investment in PNG.Prime Minister Peter O’Neill provided an update on the State of PNG’s Economy, assuring the international business and investment community. The Prime Minister also presented the government’s views on the country’s Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO).

The Bank of PNG also provided its economic outlook for PNG, which included a possible timeline for the lifting of the Exchange Control Directive which it recently issued.

Day 2 – Infrastructure

Day two focused on infrastructure, and the importance of investing in infrastructure.

Specically, discussions were centred on the importance of reliable transport corridors,

telecommunication networks, as well as Utilities and power distribution systems – all key aspects of any business.

These assets are without doubt the backbone of an economy; without roads, bridges, railways, ports and power stations, economic activity is limited and localised, trade restrict-ed, and economic growth stagnant.

Given the high level of importance placed on infrastructure, MTSL may in the future set up an Infrastructure Trust Fund.

The level of interest in MTSL and PBF was tremendous, with the team proving to be popular with delegates who attended the event.

All in all, MTSL/PBF’s participation in the PNG Advantage Investment Summit was positive, with much informal discussions, centred on potential opportunities – opportunities which can grow MTSL and PBF into the future.
