 WHY ‘MUCKLEMUFF’?

In Scots, “muckle” is an emphatic expression

meaning much, or large, and this cosy colourwork

skater’s muff is “muckle” in these senses. As well as a

double-layer of Artesano aran, the muff includes a

knitted-in, roving-stuffed lining -- guaranteed to

keep your hands super-cosy in any chill Winter

wind . The name of th is design is al so a shout-ou t toMary-Jane Mucklestone: the colourwork pattern I

have used here is no.172 in her book  20 0 Fa ir is le

Moti fs - an invaluable tome which should be on every

knitter’s bookshelf. Thanks for the inspiration,

Mary-Jane!

INSTRUCTIONS

Using your preferred provisional cast-on method,

 w i t h 5 . 5 m m n e e d l e s a n d w a s t e y a r n ,

provis ionally c/o 72 sts , pm, and join for working

in the round. Change to B and work in

stockinette for 29 rounds.

p one round, then k one round in B. With A, work increase round as follows:

k6, m1 around. 84 sts.

 Work rounds 1-54 of chart.

With A, work decrease round as follows:

k5, k2tog around. 72 sts Break A.

With B, k one round, then p one round.

With B, work in stockinette for 29 rounds .

Retaining live sts on needle, weave in all ends,

and lightly steam-block both the rs and ws of the

work. (It is important to do thi s now, as you

can’t block the muff once it is stuffed!)Unzip provisional c/o, and place c/o sts on spare

circular needle.

Making sure the rs is facing you at all times, turn

and fold the muff along the two purl rows

separating the stockinette lining from the

colourwork outer. (The colourwork outer will be

temporar ily on the inside, and the lining will be

outermost.) The two sets of live sts from the c/o

and b/o edges now lie parallel to one another,

ready for grafting.

With B, gra ft 60 sts from top and 60 sts from bottom edge together, leaving a 3” opening.

Stuff the mucklemuff with roving, distributing a

0.5” layer of stuffing evenly between the lining

and the outer.

Graft together the remaining 12 sts from top and

12 sts from bottom edge. Draw the working yarn

to the ins ide of the lin ing, and fasten off .

Turn and fold the muff so that the colourwork

outer is on the outside, and the lining innermost.

With B, pick up 84 sts in the pur l round at one

edge of the mucklemuff. Using icord bind off, b/o

all sts.

With B, pick up 84 sts in the the purl round at

the opposi te edge of the mucklemuff. Using icord

 bind-off, b/o 81 sts , and work plain icord for 35

rounds (to create wrist-loop). Join end of icord

to beginning of round, draw working yarn to the

inside of the lining and fasten off.

If you wish, with A, work a 40” icord to create a

carrying strap for your mucklemuff. Pass the

cord through the mucklemuff, knot the ends

securely, and place the mucklemuf around your

neck.

 Enjoy your muckle muf f!
