All of the hotel’s guestrooms and suites are in warm neutral tones and designed with floor-to-ceiling windows for views of the city, the KLCC Park or the Petronas Twin Towers. Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur has some of the largest rooms in the city, starting at 505 square feet (47 square meters).

Royal Brunei Airlines – then and today.

With warm good wishes,Dermot Mannion Deputy Chairman

Dear Guests,

Welcome aboard Royal Brunei Airlines (RB).

RB was established on 18 November, 1974 and in this issue of Muhibah we celebrate our 40th anniversary. In Brunei Darussalam, the event will be marked by a traditional blessing ceremony. In addition, RB will also be hosting a gala awards night to recognise the loyalty and dedication of staff who have completed 30 years of service. This event will also provide us with an opportunity to showcase our newly refurbished Royal Brunei Recreation Club, which now provides state of the art facilities for the enjoyment of members, staff and their families.

Among the award recipients will be Joan Lim, Head of Commercial Services; Hjh Hajijah Hj Abas, Traffic Services Controller and Captain Jaidin Hj Timbang, Line Captain – all proud employees of no less than 35 years of service. We salute their record of achievement with RB in this pioneering period and you can read their inspiring stories on page 56.

Our 40th Anniversary celebrations got under way in October with RB’s first annual charity run called ‘The Great Race’. This fun event, which contained a number of novelty obstacles for participants to negotiate, was a great success attracting more than 3,500 entries of all ages including a large number of VIPs, visitors, staff and families.

The other exciting announcement for RB is the impending arrival of two new Airbus A320 aircraft into service in the second half of 2015. This announcement marks the commencement of our short haul fleet renewal process, ahead of the later arrival of up to 10 highly fuel-efficient A320neo aircraft.

Brunei is the gateway to the huge rainforest of Borneo and we look forward to creating a new eco-friendly tagline of ‘Fly RB A320NEO to BorNEO’.

Today you may be travelling with us on our new, four times weekly service to Ho Chi Minh City. The return of RB on this route creates more holiday options for Bruneians. In addition, our regional and long haul customers especially from Melbourne, Dubai and London now have the opportunity to experience the tranquility of Brunei followed by the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City.

Finally, a sincere thank you for flying with RB today and, for our part, we will continue do our best to earn your support in the future.

It’s a city of culture. As one of seven UNESCO Cities of Literature, Melbourne’s literary heritage and culture is internationally recognised. White Night, for example, transforms the city’s landscape into a canvas for a variety of experiences. There are art installations, design and theatre performances all throughout the year.

Where art is everywhere. You can’t go far in the city without stumbling across an installation or some street art at every corner. From stencils, paste-ups, murals and more, there are many hidden art works tucked especially around Melbourne’s famous arcades and laneways.

Where a good cup is never far. It’s the global capital of coffee and Melbourne shows no sign of slowing down. The mastery in which each barista handles the beans to produce the best brew is a study in art and perfection. The city keeps raising the bar with how coffee is sourced and how they’re being brewed. There’s never a ‘bad coffee’. Just plenty of good choices.

The exodus of millions of bats from the cave is a sight to behold. If that is not enough, imagine being in a cavern so huge it is thought to be able to accommodate 40 Boeing 747 airplanes. These are the caves of Gunung Mulu National Park, renowned for their natural splendour and startling beauty.

The Gunung Mulu National Park is one of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in East Malaysia. The Park, covering 544sqkm, is the largest national park in Sarawak. It is also home to the world’s largest cave chamber (Sarawak Chamber), the world’s largest cave passage (Deer Cave), Asia’s longest cave (Clearwater Cave) and the spectacular razor-sharp limestone Pinnacle formation. It is a treasure trove of 2,000 varieties of plants and animals, from eight types of hornbills, 170 species of orchids to 10 species of pitcher plants. The Gunung Mulu National Park

also covers the world’s longest tree-based walkway – a 480-metre rainforest canopy skywalk that lets you a unique access to the rainforest ‘web of life’.

Exploring the chambers is what makes visiting an adventure. For example, to get to the Sarawak Chamber, visitors must follow a river upstream from the cave entrance and take a journey along the passage with a roof height of up to 60 metres! When visiting the Deer Cave, be prepared to be spell-blinded by an evening extravaganza. Three million bats form clouds circling up the cliff like a tornado before leaving the cave to spiral majestically into the rainforest. This natural phenomenon can also be witnessed at the bat observatory deck. A stone’s throw away from the Deer Cave is Langs Cave, home to rim stone pools and fascinating stalagmites and stalactites. Try spotting the rare white cave prawns hiding in the pool or the elusive cave snake.

At Asia’s longest cave passage, the Clearwater Cave, visitors will be mesmerised by the crystal clear pool created by the subterranean river. There are plank walls, paths and small bridges around the vicinity that makes this ideal for a spot of picnic.

It is easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer magnificence of the chambers – each with its own spectacular surprises. Thankfully there are a number of tours visitors can opt for to ensure they get to experience the best of the Park. There is the thrill of spelunking to discover, the Garden of Eden Valley Walk for the pool and trails, the Racer Cave’s many ropes for an endurance course and of course, adventure caving.

What began as a project to complement the offerings of the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari has now turned into one of Singapore’s most celebrated park attractions that highlight iconic river habitats of the world. River Safari goes beyond the ubiquitous aquarium exhibit. And this is where the visitor gains from a visit.

Occupying 12 hectares, River Safari houses one of the world’s largest collections of freshwater animals. The park is home to 400 plant species and over 6,000 animal specimens representing 200 species, of which 40 are threatened. One of the highlights of the park is the freshwater habitats from iconic rivers of the world such as the Amazon River, Mekong River and the River Nile.

Not only that, the park combines different modes of exploration to further immerse the visitor into the safari experience. Guests can stroll along freshwater aquariums, enter walk-through exhibits and embark on boat rides to learn about the fascinating flora and fauna of river habitats. While 85 percent of the park’s animal collection can be viewed on foot, the rest is seen on boat rides that truly drive home the majesty of river habitats and its residents.

For instance, on the 15-minute River Safari cruise along the Upper Seletar Reservoir, visitors can observe many native species such as the long-tailed macaque and water monitor lizard that thrive around the area. With the aid of a commentary, visitors will learn about the beautiful forest giants that surround the reservoir and the delicate freshwater habitats. The cruise meanders along the outskirts of Singapore Zoo and Night Safari, giving visitors a chance to spot wildlife nestled on the edges of these parks such as giraffes and rhinos. Bird watchers can keep their eyes peeled for an array of free-ranging feathered creatures, from storks to herons, which may make a stopover by the banks or roost on the trees.

The Amazon River Quest boat ride is a 10-minute cruise that meanders through a manmade river, bringing visitors up close to nearly 30 fascinating animal species that lie along the edges of the Amazon River. These include the jaguar, Brazilian tapir, capybara and giant anteater.

Not content with just seeing the animals from afar, visitors can take an up close look at the park’s residents through the thematic river zones. These showcase various aquatic and terrestrial animals via various galleries and walk-through exhibits. Crowning every guest’s visit has to be the centrepiece of the Amazon Flooded Forest. This large aquatic display of the South American rainforest shows how the area is submerged every year during the rainy season when the river rises 30 to 40 feet. Here, visitors can view a surreal world where manatees, arapaimas and other creatures swim amongst giant trees. With a volume of 2,000m³ and a viewing window of 22 metres in length and 4 metres in height, it is the world’s largest freshwater aquarium designed to provide visitors with an immersive experience.

Other star attractions and unique exhibits include the Dwarf crocodile in the Congo River, the ferocious African tigerfish of the River Nile, the carnivorous goonch catfish from the Ganges River, the Mekong giant catfish in the Mekong River zone, and the mud dragon of the Yangtze River. Another highlight of the Yangtze River zone is the Giant Panda Forest, home to a pair of giant pandas (Kai Kai and Jia Jia), red pandas and golden pheasants. Visitors can walk along an elevated boardwalk in this biodome that simulates the bears’ natural habitat with lush plants, boulders and water features.

The park successfully recreates the sights and sounds of each river zone. Each exhibit has been designed to represent not only the animal collection, but also help visitors learn about the cultures and wildlife and inspire them to contribute to conservation efforts. Complementing this is a dynamic range of interactive in-park activities, such as enrichment programmes, interdisciplinary trails and workshops that enliven the learning experience to make learning about conservation an enthralling journey.

Hong Kong, with its randomness and lack of big urban planning restrictions, may seem chaotic at first. But it is exactly this wild feeling that somehow gives poetry to the city.

It is easy to pass off Hong Kong as just any other metropolis. After all, there is Tokyo and New York. One can almost expect a homogeneity to exist in these skyscraper-centric cities. Yet Tokyo, while impressive, reveals skyscrapers that are surprisingly spread out; giving the impression of a never-ending city. New York, meanwhile, boasts of an overall homogenous architecture for a tidy outlook.

In Hong Kong, the incredible density forces the city to aim for verticality. And it is this visual that photographer Romain Jacquet-Lagréze hopes to capture with Vertical Horizons. When every commuter is so engrossed in looking at the pavement or seeing only at eye-level, Romaine’s Hong Kong presents the city in a different light.

“The attraction that I have for Hong Kong is quite instinctive,” says Jacquet-Lagréze. “Impressive cityscape, chaotic at some places, ultra geometrical at some other, colourful buildings with an abundance of details everywhere in the streets. All these elements made me want to discover more about all the districts of the city.”

What’s also interesting about Vertical Horizons is that while they all feature a competitive Hong Kong skyline, there is also a feeling of isolation with each image. Very few photographers have explored with such nuance and personal intimacy the narrative of Hong Kong’s urban landscape. What’s even more amazing is that this gripping juxtaposition remains acutely evident reproduced in a hardcover book bearing the same name.

VERY FEW PHoToGRAPHERS HAVE ExPLORED WITH SUCH NUANCE AND PERSONAL INTIMACY THE NARRATIVE OF HONG KONG’S URBAN LANDSCAPE.

“Capturing the vertical aspiration of the city is also a way for expressing my attitude of being positive and trying to grow as a human being. I also wanted to express the feeling that entrapment is never hopeless. Whenever you feel surrounded or oppressed, you can always look up, and above everything you will always be able to see the sky. For me the sky represents hope in my photos.”

Jacquet-Lagréze went everywhere for his photos. Mongkok, once named the most densely populated area in the world; Quarry Bay, where land reclamation has covered the original bay; Tsim Sha Tsui, a tourist haven; and Central District, Hong Kong’s financial hub. These are all familiar places to the Hong Kong people as well as those who visit. With Vertical Horizons, it lets everyone dive deeper into the city’s cultural chasm, its raw nature and multifaceted expressions of Chinese traditions.

The Winter Wonderland family event in Hyde Park begins in November each year and keeps the year end festive spirit going right through until January. There really is something for every member of your family at Winter Wonderland: from thrill-seeking rides and carnival games, to colourful markets, food stalls, an ice rink and big top shows.

What better way than to warm yourself with some classic hot chocolate, and take a trip on the ferris wheel to see the twinkling lights from above. Then browse the festive market’s many stalls for take-home keepsakes and inspiring gift ideas. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland returns 21 November for six exciting weeks of festivities with free admission. What’s great about the event this year is that there will be even more entertainment and new attractions than before. The hugely successful sub-zero experience – The Magical Ice Kingdom – will increase in size with even more fantastical snow and ice sculptures. This year children and adults are invited to walk through the frozen forest and catch sight of the dazzling ice figures, explore the world of frozen princesses, unicorns and the Snow Queen and discover Merlin. Visitors are invited to sit with the Knights of the Round Table and see the spectacular dragon and back by popular demand will be the castle’s ice slide and the ice thrones.

The UK’s largest outdoor Ice Rink stretching over 1,600m2 will also return, and night skaters can look forward to taking to the ice for a spin in the evenings. For those who want to gaze at the action from above, the iconic Giant Observation Wheel will illuminate the skyline.

Other favourite attractions making a welcome return will be over 200 chalets offering unusual and handmade gifts and crafts, including ceramics, candles, jewellery, wooden toys and more. Following their sell-out run last year, the UK’s favourite circus, Zippos Circus returns with two shows – their ever-popular daytime show for all the family, and an evening show for older thrill seekers, Cirque Berserk. Always quick to sell out, the circus is a perfect treat for all the family featuring comedy and thrills, world-class jugglers, clowns and aerialists. Cirque Berserk features Mechanika, a fast paced show featuring the most dangerous circus acts in the world, including the Globe of Death – the beyond-thrilling spectacle featuring three motorbikes riding together at up to 60mph in an unbelievably small steel globe and much, much more! For a unique experience, book the Zippos VIP box to watch Cirque Berserk, where you will receive fast-track entry, and witness the show from the comfort of your own private box. Both circus shows will be hosted at the awe-inspiring Sky Dome, the newest and biggest tented structure in London standing over 55 feet tall!

If that’s not enough to lure you to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, remember that it is a huge hit even with celebrity crowds in the past. Those who have been spotted enjoying the festive treats have included Prince Harry, Cara Delevingne, Helena Bonham Carter, Tim Burton, Damien Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Amanda Holden, Uma Thurman, Chris Martin, Tom Cruise, Liam Gallagher and Liz Hurley. 40RB: Life At Royal Brunei Airlines turns forty this November and Muhibah spoke to those who began their journey with the airline since the beginning.

JoAN LIM | Head, Commercial ServicesJoined as Secretary to the Engineering Manager in 1975

How has the working environment changed from the first time you worked at RB till today (almost) 40 years later? In the early days, the staff was like a big family. Today, the same DNA carries through. There remains the sense of camaraderie amongst staff and willingness to give our best for the Company.

How has RB nurtured you professionally and personally during the time you’ve worked with the airline? The Company has provided me with a lot of training to equip me to serve in the different departments from Engineering Planning to Flight Operations to Commercial. I am thankful for this as well as the support of my colleagues who collectively enable us to serve RB to the best of our capabilities.

What is it about the airline that has made you stayed on for this long? The airline is a fast changing industry which requires continual learning and adapting which makes it so interesting. The people culture is definitely a factor that has made me stayed loyal.

What are the changes you’ve seen RB go through that you especially liked or you are proud of? The last two years of strengthening the airline from system upgrades, aircraft deliveries, rebranding, mindset change, service blueprint mapping and the visible future fleet plan shows the farsighted vision of the current leadership. RB has a bright future ahead.

What does working for Royal Brunei mean to you? Working for RB has been an enjoyable journey, albeit with challenges. Safety and service is top priority for RB and we all strive to deliver that.

HJH HAJIJAH HJ ABAS | Traffic Services ControllerJoined as a check-in agent in 1975

How has the working environment changed from the first time you worked at RB till today (almost) 40 years later? Some parts of the working environment have changed, while others haven’t. It’s still a close knit group where everyone is friendly with each other. Among the positive changes I have seen is RB’s drive to revitalise itself for the better.

How has RB nurtured you professionally and personally during the time you’ve worked with the airline? RB has taught me to handle problems with a level head in order to come to a sound conclusion. My work now involves a lot of last minute changes, so it has taught me to be more patient both professionally and personally. Moreover, RB has also given me a window to discover more of the world by travelling.

What is it about the airline that has made you stayed on for this long? I like the work I am doing now. I like meeting new people, communicating with people, and finding out more about them. RB has given me a lot of opportunities in these areas. Handling other stations also means I can learn about the culture of other countries.

What are the changes you’ve seen RB go through that you especially liked or you are proud of? I’m especially proud of RB’s brand enhancement. The new uniforms, logo, and name give RB a more modern look in order to put up its image on a global map.

What does working for Royal Brunei mean to you? For the most part it has been a privilege, as it does not only help myself grow as a person, but also make me proud to be a part of the national carrier. The company is full of diverse people who are always willing to help and is flexible in meeting people’s requests.

CAPTAIN JAIDIN HJ TIMBANg | Line Captain, Airbus FleetJoined as its Cadet Pilot in 1979

How has the working environment changed from the first time you worked at RB till today (almost) 40 years later? Obviously there have been ups and downs in the airlines business, but being mentally aware and able to adapt to any crisis will keep me going and strengthen my credibility.

How has RB nurtured you professionally and personally during the time you’ve worked with the airline? I joined as Cadet Pilot in 1979 and got my CPL/IR in May 1981. Later, I gained ATPL in December 1986. I was blessed to have been promoted to Captain in August 1990. Later, I was appointed as Deputy Fleet Manager in May 1997 where I stayed till January 2000. However, due to my love of flying, I left my management position to be full time Line Flying Pilot. RB recognises your accomplishments and encourages you to fulfill your destiny.

What is it about the airline that has made you stayed on for this long? I think it’s the opportunity to network. That, as well as my own dedication to the work.

What are the changes you’ve seen RB go through that you especially liked or you are proud of? We now have more local pilots with the right attitude.

What does working for Royal Brunei mean to you? It means being able to display my loyalty both to the airline and to the country. I am very happy here and can’t imagine a better employer. Flying with RB is as much fun now as it was on my first day.

Alcohol-free Environment PolicyRoyal Brunei Airlines operates alcohol-free flights to all destinations.

Hand LuggageFor your safety and comfort, you may store your hand luggage in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Please do not hesitate to ask our cabin crew for help in stowing your luggage properly. Be careful when

opening the overhead luggage compartments, as items dislodged by aircraft movement may fall on you or fellow passengers.

Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAG)Various countries have implemented restrictions on the carriage of liquids, aerosols and gels in compliance with new guidelines set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Passengers transiting through airports and carrying any liquids, pastes and gels in containers over 100ml may be asked to dispose of the items at security checkpoints.

These restrictions may affect your ability to carry duty-free purchases onboard the aircraft. Customers are advised to check with duty free personnel before making their purchases. All liquids, aerosols and gels must be carried in

containers of no greater than 100ml/3.3oz capacity (approximately 100gm in weight) and placed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag. The plastic bag must be removed from carry on baggage and presented to security personnel at the checkpoint for inspection and separate x-ray screening.

Exceptions to the new regulations are medicines and dietary supplements needed during a flight, including baby food. Proof of need may be required.

Use of Electronic EquipmentMobile phones cannot be used at any time during the flight. They should be switched off as soon as the cabin crew makes the announcement. Other electronic devices included in this list are: Citizen’s band (CB) radio, remote-controlled devices (such as

radio-controlled toys), and transmitting devices that emit radio frequencies. These devices may interfere with the aircraft’s electronic equipment, compromising aircraft safety and endangering the lives of passengers and crew.

The following devices may be used on board, except during take-off, initial climb, approach and landing: Personal computers, FM receivers, calculators, electronic shavers, audio and video recorders, hand-held computer games, and playback devices.

Lithium BatteriesThe abundant stored energy that makes lithium batteries practical also makes them dangerous when they are not packed and carried properly. Royal Brunei takes the initiatives to increase the safety onboard with the carriage limitations (from industry initiatives, ICAO and IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations guidance) to mitigate against the risks of the hazards.

Low and medium powered rechargeable batteries in equipment and limited quantity

of spares are recommended as carry on baggage. All spare units must be in the original packaging or packed to insulate the terminals. Medium and large non-rechargeable must be carried as cargo/freight in accordance with current Dangerous Goods Regulations. High-Powered batteries are not permitted onboard passenger aircraft.

Information of safe carriage of lithium batteries on-board RB flights are also available at the RB websites www.bruneiair.com.

ABoDE oF PEACEBrunei Darussalam is a country rich in culture and heritage. It is a small, peaceful, prosperous kingdom on the northern shore of the ecologically-rich island of Borneo. Come and discover Brunei, a Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures.

Brunei is arguably best known today as an oil producing country. The nation became independent in 1984 and, thanks to its large reserves of oil and gas, now has one of the highest standards of living in the world. Its population of just over 408,000 is made up of two-thirds ethnic Malay, with the remainder being Chinese, Indian and other indigenous groups. The Sultanate has four districts: Brunei-Muara (which includes the capital Bandar Seri Begawan), Temburong, Tutong and Belait. ‘Darussalam’, the Arabic word for ‘Abode of Peace’ describes Brunei’s Islamic history that dates back some 1,500 years.
