Gail Eisenberg, lecturer in busi-ness administration, and Sam Laposata, visiting professor of economics—both at Muhlen-berg College are researchers and authors of the study: Under-standing the Gender Salary Gap: A Cohort-Based Longitudinal Study. They will present their research at regional and na-tional conferences this spring. The Senior Year Experience coor-dinates opportunities for stu-dents to build skills and increase their confidence as they face the transition from college. This workshop idea grew out of studies that show that the work-place students are entering is often a very different place than the college setting. In college, good work is automatically rewarded with high grades, but

The Congratulations Class of 2010 feature on the Senior Year Experience Web site includes profiles of seniors and their plans in addition

to a list of seniors‟ post-graduate plans. Public Relations intern Christina Cangelosi „10 is interviewing seniors and writing brief profiles

of their plans for after graduation and the story behind how they arrived at these deci-sions.

Of the seven students already interviewed, a common theme has emerged: Internships and

job shadowing are essential to clarifying ca-reer goals and obtaining offers from both educational institutions and employers.

Public Accounting Dan Aitkens “participated in these (mock interviews) events to just get a foot in the

door. Later, Aitkens secured an internship for Deloitte in Parsippany, New Jersey.”

went abroad to Copenhagen, Denmark, where she was a part of the Human Health and Disease Program,” and “she shadowed

a plastic surgeon. Piccininni also shad-

days a week.” What advice would a senior offer

Last Lecture Nominations Compelling

Over the coming months you will hear a lot more about the Senior Class Connec-tions Campaign (SCCC) and it might be helpful to know a little more about it. SCCC is dedicated to developing aware-ness in current students about the impact and importance of philanthropy to their alma mater through The Muhlenberg Fund. It is also a celebration honoring four years of the Muhlenberg experience and one of the last things a class can do to-gether before graduation. The Muhlenberg Fund is the annual giving program that sustains and replenishes the College’s budget. Only 85% of the Col-lege’s budget comes from tuition dollars; The Muhlenberg Fund helps to make up the rest. Gifts to this Fund are critical to sustain the day-to-day operation and ex-cellence of Muhlenberg.

“She is committed to incorporating societal issues into her classes, although few others would make the connections between sci-ence courses and issues of diversity and ine-quality.” “As a freshman he said, “I want you to think about what it means to be a scholar.” I’ve allowed that question to guide my career here as a student, and with those words of wisdom in my mind I know I will be a life-long learner.” The Senior Year Experience thanks all students who submitted nominations! Come to the Senior Fair on April 8 & 9 in Seegers to find out who will deliver the Last Lecture. RSVP in Student Activities to attend the Senior Celebration (May 20) where you will hear the Last Lecture.

SCCC 2010 kicked off on January 28 at a “Senior Chill” in the Red Door sponsored by the Office of Development and Alumni Re-lations. Approximately 140 members of the Class of 2010 came out for the event and were treated to drinks, an appetizer buffet and remarks by President Helm, and wit-nessed the presentation of the symbolic ‘first gift’ toward the 2010 SCCC by Kiren Goyal ’10 and Jon Falk ’10.

able to address all seniors and who could deliver that message in a way that each senior could take something away from the lecture. Compelling phrases from the nominations included: “He embodies the ideals of what I believe this college upholds—academics, talent, enthusiasm, intellect and spirit.”

Senior Class Connections Campaign Kicks Off At that event, a participation challenge was presented to the Class of 2010 on behalf of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Rich Brueckner ’71, P’04, P’10. He has agreed to match, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000 if 60% of the class partici-pates by making a gift. As of February 17, twenty-six members of the Class of 2010 had made gifts totaling $936.50. That’s a great start, but we’ve got a ways to go! Visit http://www.muhlenberg.edu/alumni/sccc.html to view the SCCC page and a video message by Dr. Jeremy Teissere and keep up to date on coming events sponsored by SCCC, like the Senior Wine and Cheese on March 20, 2010. Remember, every gift counts!

“Professor XXX would be a perfect person to give a final send off speech to seniors both in-forming about the world we are about to step into and reflecting back on our journey this far. … extremely articulate, honest and dynamic … Professor XXX could make a memorable speech that carries the potential to affect our lives …” This was one of the 67 nominations that were submitted on-line by seniors between February 1 and the February 18 deadline. Members of the Class of 2010 nominated 35 different faculty members representing 15 academic depart-ments. Committee members Patrick Fligge, Ross Lit-man, Melinda Ramirez, Andreea Sandulescu, Samantha Silverberg and Eric Thompson them-selves represented a diverse combination of majors and extra-curricular activities. After reading all of the nominations (blind—they did not know who submitted the nomination or which faculty member was being described), the committee members discussed the merits of each nomination. The committee agreed that it would be impor-tant to invite a faculty member who would be

SYE coordinates opportunities for

students to reflect upon their educa-

tion. It helps forge lifelong learners

that are aware of themselves and the

world around them. SYE offers a

range of activities, from informal

events to help with life after college,

to celebratory events in this time of

passage. A year-long culmination of

undergraduate education, the SYE

helps increase student confidence

during the transition to work,

additional formal education and

citizenship.

The Class of 2010 will be the second

class to participate in the Graduation

Pledge Alliance (GPA). Look for it at the

Senior Fair!

The Graduation Pledge of Social and Envi-

ronmental Responsibility states, “I pledge

to explore and take into account the so-

cial and environmental consequences of

any job I consider and will try to improve

these aspects of any organi-

The GPA is a project of the
