MUIRFIELD HIGH
SCHOOL
Term 4 Week 10 Issue 12 2018
Muirfield Matters
Term 4 has been, and always is, a busy term for us all.
This term we have had not only the normal day to day activities, but
Summer Arts, Year 10 Camp and Work Experience, Peer Support
Training, Orientation Day, Transition programs, The Farmers Cup,
Presentation Night, as well as our usual business of teaching and
learning. These programs are integral, and at times, unique to
Muirfield and would not succeed without the goodwill of many staff
members and the dedication of our students.
I would like to acknowledge the teachers and support staff of
Muirfield High School for their work this year and in particular those
teachers who have taken an active role in major school events. At
the end of the day staff commit to these programs because of their
belief in the benefit of a holistic and well-rounded education for our
young people. Unfortunately, as the server was down, we cannot
include photos.
Year 10 Camp
In Week 8 Mr Wilcox successfully led his charges through the trials
and tribulations of the Year 10 Camp. Although exhausted on their
return, the students reflected that they found the experience both
rewarding and challenging.
Students participated in numerous activities and seminars over the
three day camp. In groups, they completed a number of
challenges unique to outdoor learning centres.

Term 4 Week 10
Students were challenged to step out of their comfort zone and try activities
that tested their limits such as the power fan leap, abseiling, commando,
survivor challenge, giant swing, archery and the high ropes. They also
completed the mandatory Crossroads Program which covers important issues
around sex and drug education. All the activities are designed to develop
positive relationships, fostering the right kind of attitudes about themselves
while learning about safe risk taking in a supportive environment.
Students returned very tired with remnants of mud still behind their ears but
clearly had a terrific couple of days away at the Great Aussie Bush Camp at
Kincumber. I am sure that they will share these experiences with each other
for many years to come and in particular the highly energised way that
several boys reacted when they faced their fear of heights. All of the staff
who attended, Mr Wilcox, Ms Bligh, Ms Hyland, Mr Pearson, Mr Williamson and
Stu, were very impressed with the behaviour of all the students. The Aussie
Bush Camp leaders repeatedly told us how impressed they were with the
Year 10’s behaviour and attitude. Thankyou to the teachers who spent time
away from their families to supervise the camp goers.
Staff Farewell
At the end of this year we are sadly farewelling one of our
dedicated agriculture teachers who was successful in gaining
a position at Kincumber High School.
Mr Skevington leaves with our very best wishes and a huge thank you for
everything he has done in the teaching of agriculture and maintaining our
school farm. Good luck with the rest of your career Mr Skevington.

Year 7 2019 Orientation Day
The biggest incoming year group that Muirfield High has ever seen at just over
185 students joined us for Orientation Day. A terrific and informative day was
had by all as the students explored the school, met their Peer Support Leaders
for the first time and finished their visit with a sausage sizzle. Many parents
reported that they were much more nervous than their children and even
where there was a little anxiety on display amongst the students it evaporated
quickly by the afternoon, with many citing how much they had enjoyed the
day and the increased confidence it gave them.
An exciting new multimedia production was premiered on the day which was
a film made by the student body aimed at communicating information about
what it is like to live the ‘Muirfield Experience’ from the perspective of a Year 7
student. Elijah Barclay and Ella Clasie were outstanding as the presenters.
Thank you to Mr Alley, Ms Kidd and Ms Bopaththage for your efforts in guiding
students through the creation and production of such a professional and
polished film.
A big thank you to the Year 10 Peer Support Leaders who, under the
leadership of Ms Au and Mr Roberts, spent a lot of time to ensure the delivery
of high quality and engaging activities that had all the students feeling
confident and excited about starting in 2019. The Peer Support Program not
only allows our new members of the Muirfield community to get to know some
friendly faces, but it allows our students to build their leadership abilities. It is
amazing how some of our quiet and unassuming students are able to shine
during these programs.
I would also like to thank the 2018 SRC students who helped out during
Orientation Day, greeting parents and guiding our future Year 7.

Summer Arts
Summer Arts was an incredible success as always, with an evening which
showcased the talents all of all our artists, musicians, dancers and drama
students.
A huge thank you and well done
goes to Ms Frame and her team for
putting on such a magnificent
evening for the students and their
parents. I would also like to
acknowledge the parents who
supported their children by
attending the evening.
Equipment Lists
Equipment lists for all years are contained in this newsletter. Help your child
be ready for the new school year.
Uniform Reminder for 2019
The P&C and the wider Muirfield community strongly support the wearing of
the school uniform; hence the uniform shop is totally managed by the P&C.
Before parents purchase any uniform items I urge parents to use the uniform
shop to ensure that the purchased items will definitely be approved by the
school.
The Department of Education has very clear guidelines on what is
appropriate footwear. To help parents avoid any confusion I have included
visuals of what is approved footwear in this newsletter. Also to further help
parents, information about uniform and footwear is also available on the
school website. To avoid students getting into unnecessary trouble next year
please support the school when purchasing uniform for 2019. I thank you all
in advance for your support.
Muirfield Matters
The most common items that our students wear that are NOT uniform include:
Branded running shorts on girls instead of
designated school sport shorts
Sports shorts and track pants on non-sport days on
boys
Non-leather shoes on both boys and girls
Tight black elasticised skirts and tights
Sometimes our young people tell their parents that, “It doesn’t matter” or “That
everyone is wearing these.” It does matter and most students do not breach
the uniform requirements. Breaches of school uniform are followed up and
reported on student reports from Year 7 - 12. Please support us in maintaining
our positive public image and strong school spirit that wearing correct uniform
engenders. Your cooperation in this important matter will be appreciated.
If you have any preloved uniforms you no longer require, could you please
donate them back to the school to top up our emergency stock, by handing
them in to the front office.

Summer Arts
Summer Arts was a spectacular experience. The musicians, performers, and
artists highlighted throughout the evening were enthusiastic and talented.
There were a great selection of performances from singers, instrumentalists,
dramatic actors and dancers. The MCs were festively dressed and guided
the audience through the show in an entertaining manner.
Each performer showed an
impressive effort to deliver their
performance beautifully. Along
with the showcase of Music,
Dance and Drama, there were
a wide range of artworks
displayed in the annual exhibit,
ranging from impressive HSC
Body of Works and Senior
Photographic images, through to the our Junior Visual Artists displaying skills
developed in Painting, Drawing, Sculpture and Ceramics.
The variety of goodies before the concert and during the intermission
provided the audience cool relief from the heat with their homemade
punch, along with the CAPA cookies which were delicious, but also
beautifully decorated with our CAPA logo.
The winners of the Sculptures By The Sea, People’s
Choice Awards were announced. Isabelle Copland
won, with High Commended going to Katya
Schwalbe. Well done, both those artworks were
amazing, we hope you use your prizes to go on and
make even more amazing artworks.
Page 11 Muirfield Matters
A massive thank you to the CAPA Committee for their help throughout the
year and on the night. In addition, the kind donations from Concrete Online
Services for the BBQ and our peers to the refreshments stand were greatly
appreciated. All of this helps raise funds that go towards our future events.
Thank you to the staff giving up their time to make the night a success, we
do value and appreciate you. Congratulations to all the performers!
A special shout out to the Mc’s, Bree Fowler, Lucy Castelletti and Joshua
Barton, the official photographer, Amber Laing-Marshall and the behind the
scenes organiser Phoebe Copland and her team of hosts, as well as the
hard working sound/lighting students. Without all these behind the scenes
CAPA kids, our on stage CAPA kids would not shine as bright.

Muirfield High in the 2018 School Spectacular
Including more than 5,000 students, Schools Spectacular 2018 lived up to its
name - The Greatest. With talented dancers, a terrific choir and featured
artists, and the tremendous marching band, it was guaranteed to be an
incredible two days of performances, along with the countless hours of
rehearsal in preparation.
Not only was Muirfield lucky enough to have a group of brilliant dancers
join in on this year’s Schools Spectacular, but an octet of musicians was also
involved as a part of the NSW Public Schools Millennium Marching Band.
With an array of instruments ranging from drumline to sousaphone, to
saxophone, to trombone, we performed both at Spec Fest and the train
station before each show began, as well as a part of the intermission inside
Qudos Bank Arena.
Our outside show consists of parading to an area then “choreography,”
that is standing in a block and performing completely memorised music
along with choreographed moves, while our inside performance or “drill”
involves marching in well-planned formations and lines in time with more
memorised music. It’s both mentally and physically challenging, but that’s
what makes it so rewarding in each and every performance that we do
together. This year, our drill show in Schools Spectacular included the
pieces ‘Uprising’ by Muse, ‘Dynamite’ by Taio Cruz, and ‘Confident’ by
Demi Lovato.
Also known affectionately as the “Harry Potter Band” by the presenters of
the ANZAC Day Parade because of our purple sashes and
feathers in our shakos, we rehearse one weekend a month
at Galston High School, coming together with students from
public schools all over New South Wales. Led by band
director Katrina Andrus, we participate in a range of events such as Schools
Spectacular, the ANZAC Day Parade in the city, Southern Stars - Wollongong's
very own spectacular, Sydney Kings matches, NRL games, and the Invictus
Games.
If you are interested in applying for our exhilarating 2019 ensemble, read
about us and apply online at
www.artsunit.nsw.edu.au/Music/Music Ensembles.
For more information email Katrina Andrus, [email protected] or
call 0409 929 908. You can also view photos and videos of past performances
on our Facebook and Instagram pages @nswmmb. Applications are open to
anyone from years 7 to 12. Whether or not you play an instrument, we have a
place for you in the band, and we cannot wait to meet all our new members
next year. By Lucy Castelletti

NSW All Schools Athletic Carnival
At the NSW All Schools athletic carnival, held in the last week of September
at Sydney Olympic park, a few Muirfield students represented our school.
Emma Thomas, Year 7, came 1st in the 13 year old girls 3000m Walk
and 12th in the 1500m run.
Chloe Krklinski also from Year 7, finished 1st in the 12 year old girls
3000m walk and
Caitlin Roach Year 9, ran 9th in the 15yrs girls 3000m run and 14th in the
1500m run.
With their results both Emma and Chloe became NSW All Schools State
Champions. Due to her age group, Under 14 Girls, Emma has qualified to
compete for NSW at the Australian All Schools championships in Cairns QLD
on 7 – 9 December 2018. As the 12yrs girls don’t qualify for Nationals,
hopefully next year Chloe will get her chance.

Parramatta Boys AAL Squadron is enrolling for Term 3
2018
We are writing to let you know that the Parramatta Boys Squadron of the Australian Air League has is enrolling cadets for Term 4 2018 at its meeting location at LOT 1 Edison Parade, Winston Hills NSW 2153 on Tuesday evenings from 7:15 until 9:15pm. The Parramatta Boys Squadron is one of the oldest Squadrons in the Australian Air League, forming in 1935 and for many years met in their hall at Jubilee Park, Parramatta. Unfortunately, progress took its toll and the hall that the Squadron had met in since the 1940s will soon be redeveloped, so the Squadron has taken the opportunity to move into a new area at Winston Hills.
The Air League is inviting young people, who may be interested, to come down with their parents and learn what the Air League has to offer. The Australian Air League is a nationwide organisation for young people aged from 8 to 18 years. Staffed by volunteers and self-funding, it teaches leadership skills and provides a wide range of interesting and exciting activities such as camping and hiking, sport and physical recreation, building and flying model aircraft and ceremonial drill. Through classes and practical demonstration members learn the theory of aviation and a wide range of associated topics such as Meteorology, Navigation, Aero Engines and Aircraft Construction, as well as general interest subjects such as photography, field craft and community service.
The Air League also provides a range of flying experiences for its members, from simple scenic joy flights through to gliding and powered-flying training, from private pilot licence (PPL) through to airline entry standards – all in aircraft owned, operated and professionally maintained by our staff.
The Australian Air League is also approved as an Active Kids Provider registered with Service NSW. Active Kids is a program to help NSW families meet the cost of getting their kids into sport and active fitness and recreation activities. Information can be found online at https://sport.nsw.gov.au/sectordevelopment/activekids
Running a strong program that is both fun and educational, the Australian Air League is making fine citizens out of young Australians. Currently there are also a number of other Squadrons in Western Sydney including Penrith, Richmond, and Blacktown as well as Squadrons at Epping and Ryde. Girls with an interest in aviation may also contact the Blacktown Girls Squadron via our 1800 number below. For more information please contact: Parramatta Squadron: c/- Peter Gledhill <[email protected]> Or NSW Group Raymond Bell (1800 502 175)
