    WELCOME TO MULTI-MEDIA PRODUCT DESIGN

    This Guide will take you through the learning and the assessment for this unit. The subject MULTI-MEDIA PRODUCT DESIGN will cover the knowledge and skills required to apply the elements and principles of design to create a multi-media product.

    This course describes the skills and knowledge required to extend professional practice to explore and apply the principles of design in order to realize a design solution for a multi-media product.

    LEARNING ACTIVITIES

    The learning activities within each topic are designed to help build the knowledge and skills required to undertake the assessment tasks related to the relevant topic. The instructor will advise you of the details and time allocated for each activity.

    ASSESSMENT

    Assessment for this unit is performed by assignments that must be completed and returned to the instructor. It is advisable that you have a look at these tasks before starting, so that you have a sense of what will be required. The standard of competency required for each assessment task is the standard required to practise as a graphic designer.

    ASSESSMENT IS BASED ON THE ELEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

    The performance criteria are what your assessments will measure, to indicate your current competence for that particular element.

    ELEMENT PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

    1. Research for design solution ideas.

    1.1 Research and analyse information, ideas and approaches with consideration of intellectual property, moral rights and copyright requirements to assist in identifying and clarifying concept design needs.

    1.2 Research and compare techniques and tools for visual design and communication available for use in the creation of a multimedia product , exploring the characteristics and differences of digital imaging and traditional imaging

    1.3 Identify and prioritize main elements and design considerations.Examine technical aspects of the design concept.

    1.4 Appraise the aesthetics of the design.

    1.5 Research and compare the range of delivery platforms available for multimedia products

    1.6 Explore the range of typographical and visual elements that are appropriate in the development of a multimedia product

    1.7 Organise research media and findings for use by all relevant personnel throughout the design development process, updating as required

    2. Explore design elements and principles to inform concept.

    2.1 Explore and experiment with a range of design solutions based on research and analysis.

    2.2 Test various design solutions using the elements and principles of design.

    2.3 Propose design solutions and present outcomes in a progressive and logical format.

    2.4 Evaluate, adapt and use new approaches based on capabilities of techniques already used

    3. Identify and evaluate appropriate process and techniques to achieve design.

    3.1 Identify possible constraints of materials related to desired outcome.

    3.2 Identify range of potential techniques to achieve desired outcome.

    3.4 Produce prototype design using alternative methods and techniques.

    3.5 Evaluate prototype design in terms of conceptual vision/design solution.

    3.6 Identify design shortcomings.

    3.7 Identify approaches to overcome design shortcomings.

    4. Receive and interpret the brief

    4.1 Liaise with the relevant personnel to interpret and identify the objectives of the multimedia product, to ensure the creative, technical & production requirements can be met

    4.2 Identify all relevant factors which may determine and affect visual design and communication concepts and application through the breakdown and interpretation of the brief and liaison with relevant personnel

    4.3 Clarify target user/audience to determine the format and delivery platform of the multimedia product through discussion with relevant personnel

    5. Generate and assess ideas 5.1 Generate visual design and communication ideas which are technically feasible, respond to the brief and provide creative solutions

    5.2 Discuss visual design and communication ideas and collaborate, as required, with relevant personnel to ensure contribution of a range of creative solutions

    5.3 Continuously reflect on and assess the creative solutions for implications on budget, time line, technical feasibility and suitability to meet the brief

    6. Develop and refine design solution.

    6.1 Determine a design solution based on knowledge and understanding of different techniques.

    6.2 Consider and establish criteria for selecting techniques, tools, equipment, materials required for the production of concepts based on experimentation results.

    6.3 Refine design solution based on ongoing experimentation and feedback.

    8. Select media/materials for use in visual design and communication

    8.1 Identify and Select the appropriate visual design and communication techniques which fulfil the creative, technical, and production requirements of the brief

    8.2 Gather relevant materials and media, ensuring their compatibility to the creative and technical specifications of the multimedia product

    9. Realize design solution. 9.1 Select and apply the elements and principles of design to create design solution.

    9.2 Realize the design using techniques and media selected from research and experimentation to meet design solution.

    9.3 Evaluate and respond to the potential for changes in the use of techniques and experimentation to meet the design solution.

    9.4 Refine the design solution based on ongoing experiences with the production of the work.

    9.5 Use safe working practices throughout the production of the work.

    9.6 Consider issues of presentation and take action accordingly.

    ONGOING TASKS ASSESSMENT CRITERIA1. The presentation is attractive and incorporates good design practices

    2. Common screen elements are consistent throughout the design

    3. Sound effects are used where appropriate and can be turned off at any time

    4. Original graphics complementing the overall design

    5. Original animations complementing the overall design

    6. Subject of the production is in accord with the design

    7. Content is sufficient, relevant and free of errors

    8. Package design is in accord with the subject of the production

    9. Evaluation is relevant and adequately identifies issues arising throughout the design process
