Introduction to Pseudo-Wires
Pseudo-Wires were designed to emulate legacy services across Packet-Switched Network (PSN)
Pseudo-Wire (PW) –is a connection between two PWE3s carried over a PSN which emulates the essential attributes of a service (such as T1/E1 or FR)
PSN Tunnel –A PSN tunnel is tunnel in which multiple PWs can be nested so that they are transparent to core PSN nodes.

Why Pseudo-Wires are So Hot These days?
Will play critical role in the roll-out of next generation multiservicenetworks
– Perceived as the solution for true network convergence
– Preserves profitable legacy services revenues
•Emulates circuits and layer-2 services over Packet-Switched Networks (PSN)
– well established in the IP/MPLS core and are extending to the access networks
Based on emerging standards– IETF PWE3 working group
•(started with original Martini draft)– ITU, MFA, and MEF

Trends in the Carrier Networks
IP/MPLS is winning over ATM at the core and is extending to the access/aggregation layer
Ethernet becomes ubiquitous, especially in the Metro
Demand for Ethernet and IP services is growing exponentially
Network convergence is actually happening and starts at the access networks (BT 21c, MCI, NTT, C&W, ..)

Multi-Service Edge
•Preserves revenue from high margin Layer-1, 2 VPN services while leveraging strategic growing in MPLS infrastructure but relegates Layer-3 function to PE routers.
•Simplifies network management and provisioning while furnishes transparency to the end user
•Enables cost-effective MSE aggregation at the Access PoP by utilizing low cost Ethernet service- further reduces backhaul costs and complexity

Cost-Effective IP Aggregation
Replaces expensive channelized line cards on PE router…at half the cost
Replaces/eliminates 3/1/0 DXC front-end Doesn’t add an extra routing hop Preserves layer-2 logical separation for IP-VPN customers Economical GigE interface to any router
–Eliminates re-purchase of channelized line cards on next routing platform purchase
