PREFACE
Symposium O, "Multifunctional Nanoparticle Systems - Coupled Behavior andApplications" was held April 5-9 as part of the 2010 MRS Spring Meeting in SanFrancisco, California. The symposium was opened with a half-day tutorial given by BingXu, entitled "Multifunctional Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications." The tutorialwas followed by four days of oral and poster presentations on optical and magneticprobes for biomedical applications, energy applications, multifunctional polymers, andmultifunctional oxides. More than 140 talks and posters were presented, including 29invited talks.
Multifunctional nanoparticle systems integrate multiple functional inorganic ororganic building blocks, thus providing improved or new material properties unavailablefrom single components. They exhibit rich physics and provide new opportunities forproperty engineering and self-assembly. Hybrid inorganic-organic and purely inorganicmultifunctional nanoparticle systems are potentially useful in diverse fields, includingmedical diagnostics and therapy and biological/environmental sensing, catalysis, andresponsive materials. It is also crucial to further develop synthetic approaches formultifunctional nanoparticles and to investigate their coupled properties and collectivebehaviors.
We gratefully acknowledge all of the invited speakers and session chairs for helpingto make this symposium possible. Each proceedings paper was peer-reviewed, and wethank the reviewers for their time and energy invested in their reviews. We also thankthe Army Research Office, the Journal of Materials Chemistry, and MRS for theirfinancial support of this symposium.
