Fujitsu Microelectronics Europecontinues the success story with oneof the most advanced, highlyintegrated single-chip solutions fordigital satellite broadcasting, whichcombines a tuner, a QPSKdemodulator and a Forward ErrorCorrection Unit into one 120-pinpackage.
Many set-top box manufacturersaround the world already use the wellknown MB86A15. It offers aseries of benefits over previous-generation discrete QPSK NIMs,including much smaller size, significantly reduced powerconsumption and lower cost.
The chip integrates a Zero IFTuner, a QPSK Demodulator andForward Error Correction (FEC)circuitry, making it ideal for DVB-Sand DSS transmissions, without theuse of tuning-diodes, expensivecapacitance and inductive elements.
This means that the only externalcomponents needed to design andbuild a complete working front-end
for a set-top box are the F-connector,a 4MHz crystal, and some resistorsand simple capacitors.
In addition, the MB86A15internally generates the control signalfor DiSEqC 1.x, the standard forinterfacing between the satellite dishand receiver, which makes it possibleto switch between an array of dishes.
The DiSEqC 1.x standard requiresa protocol involving very strict timing, and this is supported by the new chipdirectly in hardware, optimising
performance and reducing theamount of software needed.
Much lower power consumptionis an attractive feature of theMB86A15, which operates fromsupply voltages of just 2.5, 3.3 and5V. This contrasts with previousgeneration designs in which thetuning diode required a 30V supply. Maximum power dissipation of thenew device is 1.5W (at 45Mbaud),and thanks to this it is available in acompact LQFP 120-pin package.

The third generation MPEG-2 decodercalled SmartMPEG (MB86H2x) is
MPEG-2 DECODER FOR DIGITAL TELEVISION
ideally suited for medium and low-endset-top box applications. TheSmartMPEG includes nearly all of therequired features for these set-top boxapplications, requiring only a singleSDRAM and a FLASH memory foroperation.
The SmartMPEG is the first FujitsuMPEG device to use a shared memoryarchitecture. In this sharedarchitecture, a single SDRAM is usedfor MPEG decoding, OSD graphic
generation and the system processor.Performance of the embedded ARCTangent-A4 CPU running with130MHz is very high and afterinitialisation it is completely availablefor other tasks like OSD processingor SI data analysis. This highperformance increase is achievedthrough an increased clock frequency, additional instructions, a 2kB datacache, a 4kB instruction cache and afaster memory system.

Application programming interface (API) of SmartMPEG using an RTOS
The specialised SDRAM interface iscapable of connecting to both 16 and32 bit SDRAM devices, allowingselection of the optimal componentsfor each application. A 32 bit deviceneed only be used when extremelyhigh OSD-graphic performance isrequired.
The on-chip digital PLL (instead ofexternal VXCO), the 7-segmentcontroller and the option to use thevideo DACs for audio output, allowcustomers to reduce the cost for low-end applications to an absoluteminimum. This high level of integrationwill enable customers to achieve oneof the most efficient solutions formedium- and low-end set-top boxesavailable on the market today.
There are derivatives available fromthe SmartMPEG, which includefeatures for special applications. For
example an NDS ICAM, which allowsthe SmartMPEG to be used in anetwork, where the NDS scramblingalgorithm is used. The SmartMPEGfor extended temperature makes itideally suited for automotiveapplications. For certain PayTVNetworks a Macrovision version isalso available.
Fujitsu’s Application Interfacesoftware (FAPI) enables customers aneasy start for their own development. The FAPI includes many low leveldriver and middle level examples. Theblock diagram above shows theFH_LIB (Fujitsu Hardware Library)offering a direct access to eachregister in the device. The FD_LIB(Fujitsu Driver Library) includes thedriver set, like I2C, IC-Card and VideoDriver. In addition, the middlewareand the application are running.
The basic FAPI runs with or withoutan operating system.
Some interactive API’s are portedto the SmartMPEG. This allowscustomer to build set-top boxes orIDTV’s incorporation OpenTV, MHEG-5 or NDS Middleware.

INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHICDISPLAY CONTROLLERSFujitsu’s new family of graphic displaycontrollers will optimise solutions forembedded graphic applications suchas car navigation and mobileinformation terminals. The productsin this family have numerousfunctions which are state-of-the-art tographic controllers today, but havebeen specially optimised for the areaof embedded systems. This meansthat, in addition to many 2D and 3Drendering functions, there is a flexiblelayer concept, support for screenresolution of up to XGA (1024 x 768)and further features which are ofparticular interest in the area ofnavigation, such as alpha-blendingand anti-aliasing. All derivatives havea CPU interface to enable directconnection of embedded CPUs andMCUs. Fujitsu offers a range ofgraphic display controllers withdifferent levels of integration forvarious applications.
In-car navigation is a key target application for the ‘Cremson’ graphic display controller
11
MB86290A ‘Cremson’ is a 2D/3Dgraphics controller, optimised forapplications in car navigation systemsand mobile information processingterminals. Adopting varioussophisticated functions, such as flat orGouraud shading, bi-linear texturemapping, and Z-buffering, ‘Cremson’offers a high-speed, superior-performance 3D graphics functionality. Moreover, anti-aliasing, concavedpolygon rendering and fast line drawfeatures are also included, allowingsmooth and sophisticated-qualityrendering. As a result, ‘Cremson’performs high-quality renderingoperations, with similar quality toleading-edge PC graphics, but withlower power consumption. ‘Cremson’supports a 64 bit-wide externalmemory interface. This interface isdriven at the same 100MHz frequencyas its internal operation, to support the large-memory bus bandwidth that is needed to perform the high-performance graphics operationsdescribed above. Also, in order tosupport various kinds of systemconfigurations, ‘Cremson’ offers aconfigurable host interface for fourtypes of CPUs (Fujitsu FR30, HitachiSH3/4, and NEC V832) withoutexternal glue logic.
To address the especially complexWindow configurations of carnavigation systems, ‘Cremson’ offers 4layers of overlay planes. These layers
are (from top to bottom): C (console)layer, W (window) layer, M (middle)layer and B (base) layer. All layers canbe rendered in 16 bit/pixel colour(65,536 colours displayed at a time)or rendered in 8 bit indirect colour
An important feature of ‘Cremson’ and all subsequent members of the family is that graphical information can bedisplayed on four overlapping, independent layers
C (Console) layer– 8, 16 bit/pixel– Applied to show switches and panel displays
M (Middle) layer– 8, 16 bit/pixel– Supplement for Base, can be divided into two
zones
W (Window) layer– 16 bit/pixel (Y:U:V = 2:1:1)*– Applied to overlay input video image
B (Base) layer– 8, 16 bit/pixel– Fundamental map display layer, can be divided
into two zones* To be supplied by 2nd generation product withembedded DRAM. This layer can be adopted as a3rd graphics layer as well.
MB86290A ‘CREMSON’
The new GDC’s support for 3D graphics makes possible features such as ‘bird-view’ perspectives
mode (256 selected out of 262,144colours). The colour palette can be defined separately to the C layer and B and M layers. A transparent colour option is used toblend the layers directly.
12
MULTIMEDIA
MB86290A ‘CREMSON’Layer Concept
For screen separation in wide-screendisplays, the M and B layers can besplit into two separate segments (leftand right). This feature is useful whentwo different reduced map scales aredisplayed side by side. Of course, allthese layers and segments can bescrolled independently. In addition, twohardware cursors are supported.
An ‘alpha-flag’ per pixel issupported for the C-layer. This featureis useful for blending the C layercolour with all the layer contentsbelow, providing a variable transparentcolour effect (‘alpha-blending’). ‘Cremson’ consists of 4 blockmodules: host interface block, externalmemory interface block, displaycontrol block, and 2D/3D renderingblock. An internal 64 bit bus calledPixel bus connects these modules. Also, the host interface block isconnected to each of the other 3blocks independently to avoid displayand/or rendering operations when thehost CPU attempts to access thesemodules.

MB87P2020A ‘JASMINE’MB87P2020A ‘Jasmine’ is anenhanced version of MB87J2120‘Lavender’ which adds 8Mbitembedded SDRAM, and some moreimproved features. The device is fullycompatible to the ‘Lavender’ chip anduses the same internal architecture, the same layer and interface concept. No external memory devices arerequired for graphic memory becauseof the 8Mbit embedded SDRAM. As aconsequence, the package could bereduced to QFP208. Therefore,‘Jasmine’ is optimised for compactautomotive or consumer applicationswhere a high integration of functionsis required. Like ‘Lavender’, the‘Jasmine’ is optimised to work as acompanion chip for the Fujitsu 32 bitRISC devices MB91F36x.
As a successive product to‘Lavender’, the new device has anumber of enhancements that allowthere to be more flexibility in theapplication area. First of all, a newvideo input interface was developedwhich allows acceptance of moreformats (including YUV) and which iscompatible to a wider range of videodecoder chips. A new programmableconverter matrix (YUV to RGB) allowswriting of these YUV formats tolayers and to convert back to RGB forscanning.
In addition, a gamma correctiontable was added to allow adjustmentof the picture characteristicsaccording to the connected displayrequirements and the colour look-uptable that can now hold up to 512entries.

MB86293 ‘CORAL Q’The new ‘Coral’ device family offers anincreased internal operating frequencyof 166MHz, a 64 bit memory bus, support for six independant layers, advanced alpha-blending features andenhanced video input facilities. Thehigher internal frequency of 166MHz(400MHz for display dot clocks)enables the rendering engine of thedevices to achieve a factor 10improvement in texture mapping anddrawing image quality compared to theprevious graphic controller devices.
The enhanced bandwidth allows amuch greater rate of access forgraphics elements, and deliversimproved scanning functions at higherdisplay resolutions. The ‘Coral Q’ and‘Coral B’ devices are compatible withhost CPU buses including Fujitsu FR,Hitachi SH3 and SH4 and NEC V83without external glue logic. All devicesare binary compatible with previousgeneration graphic display controllers, like the ‘Cremson’, ‘Orchid’ and‘Scarlet’ devices. This helps to speed-up developments and save costsbecause existing software modules(e.g. map renderer) and drivers can beused without any modifications.
An enhancement to 2D-drawingfunctions is the integration of a linedepth display facility, which clearlydefines the correct respective level ofintersecting map lines. Enhancedhardware design also providesimprovements in pattern lineperformance.
All ‘Coral’ devices address up to64MB of external SDRAM or FCRAMTM
memory @ 133MHz and are capable of
adjusting picture sizes to optimise theavailable memory space. All layers canhave a colour depth of 8, 16 or 24bits/pixel and can be changed inposition, size and priority. Themaximum logical layer size has beenincreased to 4096 x 4096 pixels.

MB86294 ‘CORAL B’‘Coral B’ adds video input to thefeatures of ‘Coral Q’ and is available ina BGA package. The video input iscapable of accepting TV tuner, DVDplayer or camera signals in PAL orNTSC video formats (ITU656 format).Video pictures of diverse resolutionand frame frequency rate, in eitherprogressive or interlaced modes, canbe grabbed, scaled and displayedpicture-in-picture.
The latest automotive andconsumer appliance screens areincreasing resolution to achieve betterreadability. They demand improvedpicture quality to match, for exampleDVD quality. In order to meet thesedemands, ‘Coral’ integrates a newvideo input up-scaling facility, whichallows a full-screen mode ofmultimedia pictures at largeresolutions to be displayed. Bothup-scaling and down-scaling can beset independently in horizontal andvertical directions in pixel or lineresolutions.
Using the Alpha-map features ofthe ‘Coral’ architecture, a video picturecan be blended smoothly togetherwith rendered graphics. The alphamap can be freely assigned to any ofthe six layers and allows theassignment of 8 bits per pixel, enabling each pixel to be mixed tocontrol transparency to a very highdegree of accuracy. In addition, alllayers can be blended at a fixed ratioof 256 levels.

The MB86275 ‘Olive’ is thecombination of 2 chips in onepackage. The graphic controller itselfand an 8MByte FCRAMTM areintegrated in a 256-pin MCP (MultiChip Package). The typical powerconsumption is only around 120mWwhich enables this device to be usedin battery-driven applications (hand-held graphic applications). Thearchitecture of ‘Olive’ was derivedfrom the ‘Coral’ family, which meansthat 6 layers can be used in various colour-depths but no complexrendering engine and geometryengine is present in this chip. Instead,‘Olive’ has a BitBlt-Engine to drawrectangular areas. The colourinformation of each pixel can be setby the ‘Olive’ or supplied as datastream. The host-interface is basedon the PCI-standard V2.1, 32 bit-wideand clocked with 33MHz. 2 modulescontrol the data transfer.
The standard PCI-interfaceenables the ‘Olive’ to operate as slaveon the PCI-bus. The burst-controlleris implemented beside this standardPCI-slave-interface and allows data-
transfers as PCI-master and transfersin the Olive’s local address space. Finally, ‘Olive’ has a special video inputmodule to accept sources of the dataformat IBT-RTU 656/601 and also anew single-shot mode is implemented. It allows capturing of high-resolutionpictures up to 16Mpixels from acamera module. The video unit canscale and de-interlace the video inputstream to allow the correct adjustmentfor the attached display.
