Area
Multimodal TransportationIn 2014, the Des Moines Area MPO set targets for the transportation network for the year 2050 in Mobilizing Tomorrow. These goals sought to create a robust on-street bicycle network, decrease the single-occupancy vehicle rate, and increase transit ridership within the Greater Des Moines Area.
On-Street Bicycle NetworkIn 2014, the extent of the on-street bicycle network spanned 23 miles of disjointed facilities. On-street facilities can provide key connections to destinations and better leverage existing investments in the trail network. High quality, low-stress designs will improve ridership while also making existing streets safer for all users through traffic calming.
There are current efforts to begin connecting these pieces throughout the region. Cities such as Johnston and Des Moines have installed protected lanes to provide safer facilities for all users. Cities are considering temporary demonstration projects of new facilities types and materials that could then be replicated more easily. These are important early steps to provide safe corridors and connections throughout Greater Des Moines.

Mode ChoiceCommutes Greater Des Moines Area have primarily been completed using an automobile as the extensive network of streets provide high connectivity between neighborhoods and employment centers throughout the cities in the region. Mobilizing Tomorrow noted that 77 percent of peak hour trips to downtown Des Moines were completed in Single Occupancy Vehicles, where only the driver is traveling in the car. Mobilizing Tomorrow sought to decrease the share of single occupance vehicle commuting while increasing the share of other modes including, transit, carpool, walking, and biking.

Transit RidershipMobilizing Tomorrow set a goal for transit ridership nearly double the baseyear ridership in 2014, at 8.8 million trips. Since 2014, ridership has continued to increase as DART has introduced new technology to improve the rider experience; including, a mobile app and WiFi on buses. DART has modified routes to improve efficiency and increase frequency. The map below shows the DART system throughout the MPO Planning Area. Nearly 25 percent of the Planning Area is within one-half mile of a bus route. For more on the DART’s accomplishments in 2017 see the annual report at www.ridedart.com.

Setting Our SightsMobilizing Tomorrow set targets for each of the measures to support the goal of enhancing multimodal transportation options. Since 2014 the region has seen progress toward the goal for an extensive on-street bicycle network and the innovative approaches added by DART to increase transit ridership. In 2017, the on-street bicycle network reached approximately 46 miles, a 100 percent increase since the base year. In fiscal year 2017, total transit ridership decreased slightly compared to base year ridership in Mobilizing Tomorrow, with fixed route boardings per hour at 19.4. Regionally, single occupancy vehicle continues to be the primary mode of travel.
