of passages and divide you time accordingly. If there are, estimate about 15 minutes for each passage. If there are five, estimate about 12 minutes.

NOTE: SOME PASSAGES WILL BE HARDER THAN OTHERS, so don’t be rigid about these timing rules.

even a specific word within the passage, read a few lines before and after the reference to be sure you understand the context.

Pay particular attention to critical words such as only, except, always, not, never, best. Students often hate the “all of the following except.” Be careful of the word EXCEPT.

PREDICT AN ASWER before you look at the possible responsesIf you don’t know, guess. Beginning in May 2011, there is no penalty for wrong answers

The ChoicesThe ChoicesWatch out for…Contradictory choices – choices that seem to contradict the passage. This requires an understanding of what was being said in the passageIrrelevant or not addressed – poor readers are tricked into rereading to look for ideas that weren’t there in the first placeUnreasonable – If the answer makes you shake your head and ask, “huh?” then it probably unreasonableToo general or too specific – understand the degree of specificity.

passage, you need a general answer, one that encompasses the content of the entire passage. One the other hand, if you’re asked about author’s use of a certain quote, the correct answer is likely to be quite specific.

FINAL WORD ON ANSWER CHOICES: Never forget that incorrect answers will always have an inaccurate words or phrase. Practice crossing out the word or phrase that makes an answer incorrect

Main Idea QuestionsMain Idea Questions Questions about the passage’s main idea are

very common on the exam. Often the first or last questions of a series have to do with the main idea. What is the author saying? Can you restate it? That’s what you need to do, at least in your mind. You might have to make a few marginal notes, or you may find the main idea stated in one or two lines (sometimes at the end) that you can underline.

These include: author’s ideas, attitude and tone

These are not words just to be thrown around recklessly. You need to understand how all of the elements synthesize together to make the entire passage.
