Today, we will learn…
0What multiplication is
0Why multiplication is important
0When to use multiplication versus when to use addition
0 How to multiply using the times table
What is MULTIPLICATION?
0Multiplication is the number produced by combining groups of the same size.
0 The same number can be produced by addition.
3x4=12
4+4+4=12
Why MULTIPLY?0 Multiplication is
easier than addition if you are multiplying many groups of the same size.
0 EXAMPLE= Mary has 5 rolls of lifesavers in her Trick or Treat bag. Each roll has 10 candies in it. She can easily find out how many she has by multiplying.
5x10=50
10+10+10+10+10=50
To be able to multiply large numbers, we need to know our Multiplication Table, also known as the Times Table.
TheMultiplication Table
We use the numbers on the sides to find the groups & the numbers in our groups.
If Mary is still trying to figure out how many Lifesavers she has, she can use her Multiplication Table.
She has 5 rolls of LifeSavers, so she finds the number 5 on one side
There are 10 LifeSavers in each roll, so she finds the number 10 on the other side.

Let’s try one!If Tom has 6 books, and each book has 12 pages, how many pages are there total?
6 x 12= ?

Your Multiplication Table is only one tool that you can use to solve these
problems!
Next, we will learn a few tricks to help you learn a
few of the numbers by heart!
