For the production of stainless-steel coldstrip, SMS Siemag supplies powerful 20-high rolling mills which are designedas stand-alone stands operating in revers-ing mode. They come in two versions:the closed, robust MonoBlock design orthe more flexible SplitBlock type. Bothtypes of roll stands permit to achieveminimum thicknesses down to 0.1 mmat rolling speeds of up to 1,000 m/minand maximum thickness reductions ofup to 90%. Another design are our
18-high stands with Z-high roll setswhich are particularly suited for integra-tion and use in continuous productionfacilities. Fully automated high-speed rollchanging and highly dynamic control sys-tems are a must for the implementationof a continuous production process. Several stands in tandem arrangementrepresent a high-performance plant con-cept for the economical production ofpremium-quality stainless-steel strip.
Moreover, the complete design or con-figuration of our Z-high roll setups allowsto subsequently revamp existing four-high or six-high stands, thereby cuttinginvestment costs as compared to newplants.

This size-22 SplitBlock stand is the sec-ond roll stand that SMS Siemag has builtfor Yieh United Steel Corporation (Yusco).The customer again decided in favor ofthis proven concept because of the goodexperience gained with the first facility.
Just like mill No. 1, this second coldrolling stand incorporates all the actua-tors or control elements needed for roll-gap setting and is thus able to process awhole range of different strip grades andqualities into precisely rolled finishedproducts.
A thickness and flatness control systemas well as a mathematical model devel-oped by SMS Siemag preset all rollingparameters and control them fully auto-matically while rolling is underway.
There was no need to install an addi-tional uncoiling station as the startingmaterial can be introduced into theprocess directly at the reversing coilers.

Lianzhong Stainless Steel Corporation(Lisco), a subsidiary of Taiwan’s YiehUnited Steel Corporation, is a productionlocation set up on a greenfield site insouthern China. For the new plant, SMSSiemag supplied one size-22 SplitBlockstand for a rolling width of 1,300 mm as well as one MonoBlock stand of size21 for 1,600-mm-wide strip. Both standswere fabricated in minimum time andstarted up in 2006.
Manufactured in our Hilchenbach work-shops, the 20-high SplitBlock stand wascompletely preassembled including entry-and exit-end equipment and the standplatform so that essential motions andthe functions of the hydraulic systemcould be tested prior to final installationin the customer’s works. As a result, the original erection and commissioningschedule could be shortened by severalweeks.
Various actuators or control elements forroll-gap setting make it possible for thecold-rolling stand to process a wholerange of different strip grades and quali-ties. A thickness and flatness control sys-tem is also part of its equipment outfit.All rolling parameters are preset by amathematical model from SMS Siemagand controlled fully automatically duringthe rolling process.

20-high mill for foil production
To ThyssenKrupp VDM, Germany, SMSSiemag supplied a 20-high cold rollingmill for the safe and reliable productionof foils, especially ultrathin foils down to a minimum final thickness of 20 µm.
The foils are made of high-strength special alloys which are employed, forinstance, in automotive catalytic convert-ers. SMS Siemag supplied the plant on turnkey basis including mechanicalequipment, utility systems and electrics& automation.
Highly dynamic actuators and adequatecontrol systems in the roll stand enablethe production of ultrathin foils withthickness tolerances of minimum 1 µm.For this purpose, the mill is equippedwith feed-forward and feed-backwardmass-flow control systems for thicknesscontrol. And this cold rolling facility isthe first ever to incorporate our novelSMS Siemag flatness measuring rollwith closed roll surface.
The mill stand is fitted with all controlelements required to produce strip withtop flatness. This includes crown adjust-ment on backup shafts A and D, shiftingof the first intermediate rolls and adjust-ing possibilities such as tilting andswiveling of the top roll set by means of the AGC system.

The 20-high mill stand at Yieh UnitedSteel Corporation is the first size-22 SplitBlock stand ever built by SMS Siemag.Taiwan’s largest stainless-steel producer,Yieh United Steel Corporation (Yusco)uses this 20-high mill to roll strip in widthsof 800 to 1,300 mm down to final thick-nesses of minimum 0.15 mm.
Thanks to its large number of actuatorsor control elements for roll-gap setting,the roll stand is able to process a wholerange of different strip grades and quali-ties. For the first time, the hydraulic roll-gap adjusting cylinders were arranged inthe upper part of the stand to ensureready access for maintenance jobs. Allrolling parameters are preset by a mathe-matical model from SMS Siemag andcontrolled fully automatically during therolling process. Control systems ensureexact final thicknesses and a perfectlyflat strip.
The coils can be placed directly on thereversing coiler so that no separateuncoiling station with pinch roll leveler is needed.

The largest SplitBlock stand ever built bySMS Siemag is in operation at Outokumpu(formerly Outokumpu Stainless Steel) inTornio, Finland, and is the Tornio loca-tion’s third 20-high roll stand. Featuring arolling force of 16,000 kN and a maximumstrip tension of 600 kN, this powerfulfacility is able to process stainless-steelstrip in widths up to 1,625 mm and ingo-ing thicknesses up to 8 mm. Coil handlingis fully automated using self-controlledcoil cars.
The backup shafts are secured in thestand block by means of a hydraulic sad-dle clamping device and need not bedetached manually by the maintenancecrew. Changing of the work rolls and thefirst intermediate rolls is done fully auto-matically by a robot system. The uncoil-ing station with leveler unit reduces idletimes during coil changing.
A large number of actuators or controlelements for roll-gap setting make surethat a whole range of different stripgrades and qualities can be processedwith top results. In addition to a thick-ness and flatness control system, thefacility avails of a mathematical model for presetting the rolling parameters andfully automatic process control.

This 20-high rolling mill is geared toprocess stainless-steel strip coming incoils with a maximum weight of 35 t and diameters of up to 2,400 mm. Stripwith an ingoing thickness of maximum 5 mm is rolled down to a minimum finalthickness of 0.1 mm. Thanks to variedactuators or control elements for roll-gapsetting, a whole range of different stripgrades and qualities can be processedwith top results.
The work rolls and the first intermediaterolls of this mill are changed fully auto-matically, while changing of the secondintermediate rolls and the backup shaftsis accomplished in semiautomatic mode.The backup shafts in the stand block are fastened by means of a hydraulicsaddle clamping device and need not beunclamped manually by the maintenancecrew. An automated transport systemsupplies the paper winders with freshpaper coils which are kept on stock in a store beside the roll stand. To boostproductivity, the mill is equipped with anuncoiling station and a leveler unit forshorter nonproductive times during coilchanging. Stainless-steel strip with ingoing thick-nesses of maximum 8 mm can beprocessed on this 20-high stand, thefourth at the Krefeld location. For highestoutput and performance, the facility canbe operated at a maximum rolling speedof 1,000 m/min. Equipped with a largevariety of actuators or control elementsfor roll-gap setting, the stand is able toprocess a whole range of different stripgrades or qualities.
The work rolls and the first intermediaterolls of this mill are changed fully auto-matically, while changing of the secondintermediate rolls and the backup shaftstakes place in semiautomatic mode. Ahydraulic saddle clamping device servesto secure the backup shafts in the standblock so that any manual unclamping bythe maintenance crew is unnecessary.The uncoiling station with walking-beamcoil conveyor and leveler unit reducesthe idle times during coil changing,thereby increasing the mill’s productivity.The sequences for coil loading and stripthreading are automated.
Easy maintenance and ready access areensured thanks to central arrangement of all hydraulic controls on a platformbehind the stand. The process controlsystem comprises: X-ray thickness mea-suring system, thickness control system,flatness measuring roll and control sys-tem as well as a mathematical model forpresetting and control of all rolling param-eters.

Inspired by the successful developmentof stainless-steel production at its Tianjinlocation, the customer decided to takeanother expansion step into the profitablestainless-steel market. To ensure quickand smooth implementation of this pro-ject, TPSS chose SMS Siemag to supplytwo new 20-high rolling mills. The goal isto double the existing plant’s cold-rollingcapacity to 400,000 t.
Just like mills No. 1 and 2, the new coldrolling facilities will be of the provenMonoBlock design and equipped withcutting-edge technology and equipmentfrom SMS Siemag. The product spec-trum will comprise stainless-steel stripwith a maximum width of 1,350 mm andingoing thicknesses of up to 6 mm whichwill be rolled down to a final thickness of minimum 0.15 mm.
On both sides, the roll stands are equippedwith high-tension reversing coilers andthe entry and exit facilities required forthe economical production of stainless-steel strip. There was no need to investinto an additional uncoiling stationbecause the coils to be rolled can beloaded directly on the reversing coilers.In addition to a highly dynamic thicknessand flatness control system, both millscome with a mathematical model for pre-setting all process parameters and fullyautomatic control of the rolling process.
To use the resources employed as eco-nomically as possible and protect theenvironment, both mills will be equippedwith a modern SUPAFINE® filtration sys-tem for efficient cleaning and cooling ofthe rolling oil used.

Using proven plant technology and equip-ment made by SMS Siemag – that’s howthe Terni, Italy, location will carry on itssuccess story. The new cold rolling millincorporates leading-edge stand techniqueand is already the seventh MonoBlockwhich the customer ordered from SMSSiemag for its Terni operations.
Acciai Speciali Terni is Italy’s largeststainless-steel producer and belongs tothe ThyssenKrupp Stainless group, aEuropean producer of high-quality stain-less-steel strip for the globally risingdemand.
Featuring the proven, compact MonoBlockdesign, the mill processes pickled stain-less-steel strip of the AISI 400 (ferritic)and AISI 300 (austenitc) grades in widthsof up to 1,370 mm and ingoing thick-nesses of maximum 6.3 mm.

MonoBlock Stands
Design, procurement, manufacture andshop assembly were completed in just12 months. The MonoBlock was trans-ported to Italy in assembled state includ-ing baseframe and gearunit, installed in record time and put into operationseveral weeks ahead of the contracteddeadline.
The mill consists of two reversing coil-ers, one uncoiling station with levelerunit and a mobile crop shear to minimizethe nonproductive times during coilchanging. Fully automated control sys-tems for precise strip thickness and opti-mal flatness ensure cold-rolled finishedproducts of supreme quality. All rollingparameters are preset automatically by a mathematical model.

In 2005, TPSS Yuantong Stainless SteelWare Corporation had branched out intothe stainless-steel market, and just oneyear later ordered and commissioned afurther 20-high cold-rolling stand fromSMS Siemag. Representing the next stepin TPSS’s ambitious expansion program,this mill No. 2 boosted production byanother 80,000 tpy of stainless-steel strip with top quality.
Identical in design with stand No. 1, themill stand No. 2 serves to process pick-led stainless-steel strip with a maximumwidth of 1,350 mm and ingoing thick-nesses of up to 6 mm.
The “Zero-Crown” MonoBlock standsout for its high stiffness and is com -pleted by entry- and exit-side high-ten-sion reversing coilers as well as the necessary entry and exit equipment.
Mill productivity is increased by an addi-tional uncoiling station with pinch roll leveler allowing all preparatory work forthe next coil to be done while rolling isunderway.
Closest thickness tolerances and optimalflatness are ensured by adequate controlsystems. The mathematical model fullyautomatically controls all the parametersneeded for reliable and precise rolling.

Lianzhong Stainless Steel Corporation(Lisco), a subsidiary of Taiwan’s YiehUnited Steel Corporation, operates a pro-duction facility set up on a greenfield sitein southern China. Just like for its homelocation in Taiwan, the customer decidedto employ SMS Siemag’s proven 20-highstand technology and equipment at itsnew production operations in China.
In addition to the size-22 SplitBlockstand, SMS Siemag installed a secondcoldrolling mill in MonoBlock design inLisco’s plant. This MonoBlock standserves to process stainless-steel stripwith a maximum width of 1,600 mm andingoing thicknesses of up to 6 mm intohigh-quality cold strip.
The large-width stand block is of “Zero-Crown” design and features excellentstiffness at minimum mill spring underrolling load. For easier and less mainte-nance, the backup shafts are secured inthe stand block by means of a hydraulicsaddle clamping device.
Fully automated thickness and flatnesscontrol systems ensure precisely rolledcold strip with closest tolerances. Themathematical model from SMS Siemagautomatically presets all rolling parame-ters which are controlled online duringthe rolling process.

Five 20-high mills for
stainless-steel strip
Taiyuan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (Tisco),China’s leading stainless-steel producer,ordered a total of five 20-high mills fromSMS Siemag, representing the largestsingle order for 20-high roll stands everawarded to any supplier. All of the standscould be put on stream ahead of the con-tracted deadline. In addition to these five20-high mills, SMS Siemag, in 2005, sup-plied Tisco with an inline skin-pass millfor its hot-strip annealing and picklingline.
The MonoBlock cold-rolling facilities aredesigned to process very high coil weightsof up to 35 t with a maximum coil diame-ter of 2,400 mm.
All of the 20-high stands are providedwith high-tension reversing coilers onboth sides as well as the necessary entryand exit equipment. The first mill addi-tionally incorporates an uncoiling stationfor efficient and smooth processing ofhot strip coils with maximum strip thick-nesses.
To ensure closest tolerances, each of thecold-rolling stands features a thicknessand flatness control system. A mathe-matical model presets all rolling parame-ters which are controlled fully automati-cally during the rolling process.

Since 2001, Shanghai Krupp StainlessCo. Ltd. (SKS) has been producing high-quality stainless-steel strip of austeniticand ferritic grades on a 20-high coldrolling mill made by SMS Siemag. SKS is a joint venture between ThyssenKruppStainless and Baosteel for stainless-steel production in China.
Just like at its German operations in Krefeld, Benrath and Dillenburg,ThyssenKrupp decided to equip theShanghai plant with SMS Siemag’sproven 20-high stand technology andequipment.
The new mill in MonoBlock designenables the processing of pickled stain-less-steel strip with a maximum width of 1,340 mm and an ingoing thickness of up to 5 mm.

In order to be able to roll also wide stripat its Terni location, the customer onceagain decided in favor of technology andequipment made by SMS Siemag.
The 20-high mill in the proven, compactMonoBlock design processes stainless-steel strip in widths of up to 1,575 mmand ingoing thicknesses of max. 5 mm.
The stand block in “Zero-Crown” designfeatures maximum rigidity at minimummill spring under rolling load.
It is the sixth 20-high cold-rolling mill thatSMS Siemag has built for this customer.
For easier replacement, the backupshafts are secured in the stand block bymeans of a hydraulic saddle clampingdevice. The mill is provided with a fullyautomatic thickness and flatness controlsystem. All rolling parameters are presetby a mathematical model and controlledonline during operation.
In this mill, the coils to be rolled are intro-duced into the process directly at thereversing coiler so that no extra moneyhad to be spent on an uncoiling station.

In addition to its two 20-high stands fromSMS Siemag, Yieh United Steel Corpora-tion contracted us to supply an 18-highcold-rolling mill. This roll stand representsan innovative type of rolling facility whichSMS Siemag has added to its portfolio ofmodern stand equipment and technology.
A special feature of the 18-high conceptare the slim work rolls with a diameter of 120 mm. Horizontal support by meansof adjustable supporting roller bridgesensures that the work rolls are laterallystabilized during the rolling process.
The mill stand also incorporates an HSshifting system for the work rolls as wellas an axial shifting and bending systemfor the intermediate rolls. All actuators

Mills of this type can be operated inreversing mode and as inline stands forrolling scale-affected hot strip or conven-tional cold strip. In integrated rolling,annealing and pickling lines, 18-high rollstands in tandem arrangement form thetechnological unit for thickness reduc-tion.
