Functional description

Functional description The Multitec automated system is designed for stacking and unstacking

empty pallets on a packaging line. Two types of configuration are available:

• In the Unstacking mode, the system allows to unstack empty pallets inorder to place them on a palletising line.

• In the Stacking mode, the system allows to stack empty palletscoming from a depalletising line.

Pallet transfer sub-unit It allows pallets to be transferred from the system input to the elevator (or

vice versa, depending on the chosen mode). It mainly consists of:

• A roller conveyor;• A three-phase asynchronous electric motor driving the rollers;• Two photoelectric cells to detect the presence of pallets at the

conveyor input and under the elevator.

Pallet gripping sub-unitPallet gripping is ensured by 4 articulated cleats connected to pneumatic

cylinders and connecting rods.This sub-unit consists of:

• A symmetrical set of 2 rows of 2 articulated cleats;• Two pneumatic double-acting cylinders for the cleats motion;• Four magnetic limit reed switch detectors fixed on the cylinders.

Lifting and storage sub-unit It consists of:

• A mobile pallet storage rack, vertically guided by rails and rollers;• A motion system, achieved by one of the three available actuator kit:

– electric motor;– pneumatic cylinders;– hydraulic cylinder.

The electric motor system consists of:• A three-phase electrical gear motor, to ensure the up and down

movement;• Three position switches.

The pneumatic cylinder system consists of:• Two pneumatic cylinders in tandem, ensuring the upward movement,

the descent being achieved by gravity, by the weight of the movingunit;

• Four magnetic limit reed switch detectors fixed on the cylinders.

The hydraulic cylinder system consists of:• A hydraulic cylinder connected to an hydraulic unit, ensuring the

upward movement, the descent being achieved by gravity, by theweight of the moving unit;

• Three position sensors.

Control and power cabinet It consists of:

• A programmable controller;• A touchscreen allowing to control the system, to supervise it and to

carry out tests on the actuators/sensors;• A set of circuit breakers protecting the electrical elements (motor

starters);• 24Vdc power supply;• A set of contactors and relays to control the electric actuators;• A safety relay to manage the emergency shutdown;• Connection terminal boards.

This cabinet can be used for the electrical training.

Pneumatic island It consists of:

• 3 bi-stable distributors;• 1 monostable distributor.

The power supply is provided by:• 1 emergency shutdown solenoid valve;• 1 packing unit (filter and controller);• 1 shut-off valve (allowing, among others, the pneumatic lockout).

Purposes of the 3D simulator

Realistic simulation teaching platformIn addition to the real system, the MULTITEC Virtual Operating Part (VOP)

offers a realistic simulation teaching platform that operates autonomously orconnected to an industrial Programmable Logic Controller.

Learning the automation techniquesThe super realistic 3D animation of the simulated VOP, derived from CAD

tools (Solidworks), allows the learner to approach the study of the variousphases of an automation project:• design (Sequential Function Chart editors),• programming the controller,• testing and commissioning,• system control (operating console),all of them in complete safety for the learner and without any risk of materialdamage.

Teaching resources

Learning of the real system made easierThe Virtual Operating Part of the MULTITEC made the control and

understanding of the real system easier thanks to the integrated managingsystem which allows the teacher to easily associate 3D objects withhypertext links to all types of external files (PDF, Word documents, sounds,videos, photos, etc.) or applications (PLC programming software, etc.);

The user has the opportunity to easily access to many educationalresources, being in a learning mode (inductive approach).

Operation

Accurate representation of the MultitecThe simulated Virtual Operating Part is an accurate representation of the

real-time electrical and dynamic behaviour of the Multitec system,including its sensors, actuators and control panel.

Programming with virtual or real PLC The purpose is to program the Control Part of the system, using either the

virtual machine integrated into the VOP or a PLC connected to thecomputer.

The information is then exchanged between the VOP and the PLC throughan Ethernet link in Modbus TCP/IP protocol.

Main features3D graphic realistic representation,Realistic real-time dynamic behaviours,Total interactivity with the Virtual Operating Part,Interactive virtual control touchscreen,Sequential Function Chart editor in compliance with IEC 60848 standard,GEMMA editor,Dynamic view of the pre-actuators state in the control cabinets,Dynamic view of inputs/outputs,
