    M-U-M Magazine

THISCOLUMNISthe lastthing that gets writ-ten each month; this

is due not so much to pro-crastination (which Im verygood at), but rather to allow

the inclusion of any late-breaking news. The rst week of

July had lots of news, and, unfortunately, it was all bad.As Im sure most of you know by now, PNP Hank

Moorehouse died July 2, 2011, while traveling in Chinawith a touring close-up show he produced. At the nationalconvention in Pittsburgh (which, at the time of this writing,is next week), Hank was to be the guest of honor. Hanksmemory will be honored with a celebration of his life.George Schindler offers some thoughts on his friend in the

Deans Diary column on page 76. Im sure that there will besome great Hank Moorehouse stories shared in Pittsburgh.Heres one from Dennis Loomis:

Im still shocked at the news about my old pal HankMoorehouse. Hank was a big inuence as I started my pro -fessional career. For the brief period that he ran the smallmagic shop in Ann Arbor, I was his Saturday afternooncounter demonstrator. I also traveled with him to many con-ventions to help him run the booth.

In his early years as a magician, Hank fell in lovewith the vanishing cigarette in the handkerchief (thumbtip version). He was a smoker, and seldom went out of the

house without a thumb tip and a handkerchief. When Hank,Marcello Truzzi, and I founded Ring 210 in Ann Arbor, wehad an annual banquet with dinner and a show. To aid thetreasury, we sold tickets to lay people as well. At our rst

banquet, Hank was the emcee. To warm up the audience, hehad decided to do the cigarette vanish. He lit a cigarette, tookout his pocket handkerchief, formed a cavity in the handker-chief with his thumb, and pushed the lit cigarette inside, ashe had done thousands of times before. As he withdrew histhumb, for some unknown reason, the thumb tip did not stayon, but ew up into the air and fell to the stage with a clatter.

None of us who knew him could believe it, and neither could

Hank. He looked down at that thumb tip smoldering awayon the oor and said, Oh, s#*t!The next week, Marcello and I went to a trophy shop

in town and bought a small trophy, glued a thumb tip on toit, and had the plaque engraved with the words Oh, s#*t!We presented it to him at our next meeting and we all had agood laugh about it. Hank laughed the loudest, as we knewhe would.

He was a gem, and one of a small group of people whoreally helped me to get my career going in the rst few years.

Its hard to believe that hes gone.

Hank was the subject of the cover story by PNP BradleJacobs in the June 2011M-U-M. So long, Hank; you will bmissed.

To compound the sad news, the magic world lost severother prominent people during the last week of June and thrst week of July. Tom Ewing writes, Houdini buffs an

magic history enthusiasts lost a real friend with the passinof Sid Radner on June 25. Sid was a leading authority oHoudini and frequently lectured at the annual Magic Colectors Association gatherings. At one time he owneHoudinis original water torture cell, the oversized milk cathat preceded the cell, scrapbooks, handcuffs, locks, pickand other secret devices used by the escape king. He obtainemany of these directly from Hardeen, and later broadenehis collection signicantly. Always interested in spreadin

Houdinis name and fame, he was associated with the HoudiMuseum in Niagara Falls, the Outagamie Museum/HoudiHistorical Center in Appleton, Wisconsin, and other publvenues. This kind and gentle man will be missed.

My old friend Jimmy Yoshida died on July 3, 2011. Jimmwas a kind and charming man, who always seemed to hava twinkle in his eyes and a smile on his face. He was a grehost and a great ambassador for magic. Aloha, Jimmy.

You may not know who B.J. Jennings was, but she waimportant in the lives of two of magics legendary greatDai Vernon and her husband, Larry Jennings. For a whilVernon lived at the Jennings home. When Larrys heal

declined, B.J.s ministrations kept him alive longer thawould have been expected. After Larrys death, B.J. moveto Las Vegas, and Lisa and I got to know her there. She westy and always fun to be around, and she had great stori

of life with Larry and the Professor. B.J. died on July 4, 201On an upbeat note, Warren J. Kaps, chairman of Th

    VINNY GROSSO

    FROM THE PRESIDENTS DESK

PROMISES- When I ranfor second vice president, Imade a video campaign pieceoutlining several goals I was

committed to accomplishing. Thanks to the national presi-dents who preceded me, we

were able to get them all done before I even became president. Thenal one happened this past June with the help of past presidentsMike Miller and Mark Weidhaas, and RVP Jania Taylor.

The goal was to produce magic shows in theaters that featuredyoung magicians and promoted the S.A.M. and S.Y.M. There aremany people out there with a strong interest in magic, who havethe potential to be great members of our society and local assem-blies. Unfortunately, they are not aware of our organization, butthey are aware of magic shows at their local theater.

So, when I had the opportunity to produce a family magic

show at Detroits Meadow Brook Music Festival, I capitalizedon it. The show went over well; we featured two young and verytalented magicians, TJ Ketchmark and Savannah Durocher. Itstoo early to tell what impact this show will have on the Detroitassembly, but all indications are that it was successful. We willwork to produce more of these shows and continue to ne tunethe program.

MEMBERSHIP CARDS - When PNP Mike Miller metIsraeli deputy Yosi Notkovitz, our new style membership cardwas born. Yosis suggestion was a hard plastic card similar to acredit card or hotel key a card that doesnt wear out and one thatyou can be proud to show off to someone. We didnt want to stopthere; we also decided that the card should reect our rich history

and feature past members of historical signicance to the S.A.M.Each year, another member from our past would be highlighted, making the membership card a collectors item. We wanted totake it even further; we are magicians, so shouldnt our member-ship card be magical? Each year we will incorporate a new magiceffect into the card.

This year I decided to feature past national president andformer M-U-M editor Milbourne Christopher. Mr. Christophercertainly did a lot for the S.A.M. and the art of magic, and hislegacy lives on through the Milbourne Christopher Foundation. The MCF presents their prestigious awards at the banquet of ournational convention. This year, Maurine Christopher, wife ofthe late Milbourne, was the guest of honor for the Life Membergathering. This is where the new membership cards were unveiled.

I hope you enjoy your new membership card; youll receiveit when you renew your membership. I am very excited aboutthe new magic effect within the card. M-U-M columnist SteveMarshall was the creative force behind it, and I think youll havefun with it.

We also added a new feature to the l ife members cards gold!If you want the gold version of the membership card, contact ourlife member chairperson Clem Kinnicutt at [email protected]. Also, if youd like to learn more about Milbourne Christo-pher you can read the ar ticle John Moehring wrote about him inM-U-Mon either our Web site or via the magicSAM app for the

iPhone/iPad/iPod touch.SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE - We recently releas

the rst Smartphone app for a magic organization, magicSAM

The response has been amazing. In just the rst month it h

been downloaded approximately seven hundred times in eigcountries and installed on a thousand devices. Its only going get better, because we are diligently working on the next versio

We are also exploring porting the app over to other devicsuch as Android and Blackberry. Whenever we work on a projein the S.A.M., we always have to ask ourselves, Is this a goothing for our members? There is no single program or servithat we provide our members that is a perfect t for everyon

Thats why we try to offer as many unique benets as we can, there truly is something for everyone.

With magicSAM, we wanted to lead the way with the rSmartphone app for a magic organization; we knew we wegoing to have to focus on one platform. We chose Apples iO

platform because of its market reach. The number of downloaand installs weve had the rst month validates that decisioPlease send us your feedback on ways to improve the app, or lus know of other platforms you would be interested in. I canpromise well be able to do everything thats requested, but wwill continue to strive to offer something for everyone.

TRAVEL TIPS - I travel a lot, and I travel with people whtravel a lot. I have picked up many travel tips through the yearand I will periodically share them with you here. One of mfavorites is from Brad Sherwood. Brad is an improv artist whwas regularly featured on Whose Line is It Anyway; he is perpetally on tour with his improv partner Colin Mochrie. Brad likesdark hotel room at night and was frustrated with the gap betwee

the curtains covering the window. His solution? Take a hangout of the closet, the one with clips for pants. Use the clips to jotogether the two curtains. Presto! You can now sleep in darknesIf you want to see more of Brads genius, check out Two MaGroupon Amazon.com; its a DVD of Colin and Brads improshow.

SUMMER OF CONVENTIONS FRIENDS - The summis in full swing and so are magic conventions. Magic conventioare not just great for the magic they provide, theyre also a greway to catch up with friends you havent seen in a while.

Is it just me, or do we all go through the following cycle asmagician? As a young magician we go to our rst convention an

we dont miss a single event. We practice newly learned effecbetween lectures, buy all that we can from the dealers room, anleave with enough new things for two shows. Its all about thmagic. Then, as we get older and we go to conventions, we enup missing events because were too involved in a conversatiowith an old friend. The line-up of acts performing and lecturinbecomes secondary to the friends who will be attending. Its aabout our friends in magic.

To use PNP Mark Weidhaass line: You have a friend in thS.A.M. I hope to see you at one of the conventions!

    Convention in

    One Night 2011

Is it possible to have a magic convention in one night? Ab-solutely! May 3, 2011, marked the Rhode Island Societies ofMagicians fth Convention in One Night, and it was a greatsuccess. Bruce Kalver did a fantastic job of organizing the event, which included close-up and stage shows, as well as lectures anda dealer area. Many guests werein attendance, including S.A.M.

President Mark Weidhaas andEric Jones, who was recentlyfeatured in an M-U-M coverstory.

The night opened with somegreat close-up magic fromMark Weidhaas and Eric Jones.Mark, looking very dapper, performed an excellent set ofmagic. His performance was

both bafing and entertaining.Eric performed some nice card

magic, and demonstrated hisskill with coins, perform-ing much of the magic in thespectators hands.

A quick break gave thecrowd some time to shop.

Diamonds Magic was themain attraction in the dealerarea, with a large assortmentof books, videos, effects, andprops. Tony Karpinski wasalso on hand, displaying hisbeautiful hand-craf ted effects. As folks shopped, the professionperformers mingled with the crowd. Eric Jones was kind enougto offer advice on a book purchase, giving his seal of approval.

There was plenty to learn from the evenings three lecturerMark Weidhaas taught the history and secrets behind his highlsuccessful character, Inspector Magic. Mark was complete

comfortable going in anout of character, switchinbetween performing anteaching. He touched upocharacter development anthe importance of famimagic. Mark also offeretips on using a commothread throughout your peformance.

With twenty-three yeaof experience, Bob Carropresented a great lectu

on performing school magic. He explained the business side omagic, as well as audience management and keeping the adul

interested. The nal lecturer, Eric Jones, taught some fantastclose-up magic, including theInvisible Cigarette, a trulyamazing effect, and a greatthree-coin routine using un-gimmicked coins.

During the course of theevening, Mark Weidhaaspresented PresidentialCitations to Bob Carroll andBruce Kalver for their manyyears of dedication to the artof magic.

The night ended with a great stage show. Bob Carroll opene

with a hilarious ventriloquism routine, even bringing BrucKalver into the act. Vinny Grosso took a more serious approacperforming magic with cards and silks. Getting back to thhumorous side was Tony Gangi and his whacky sideshow.

Mark Weidhaas brought us back to more traditional magiperforming magic with money and changing the color of 45-rprecords. Alexanderia is one of the few female escape artists in thworld, and she was kind enough to take the stage as well. ErJones closed the show with a polished set of magic.

Huge thanks to Bruce Kalver for organizing everything, anto all of the guests and performers who made this a most enjoyabconvention. Chris Natale

NEW YORK, NY Avisitor to the Magic Table formany years, Albert Callus ofAssembly 168 was in fromNew Jersey with Marco andTim Fortune this month. Marcodid a beautiful effect with akey. We had a great time with

them. They joined the regulars,PP Jerry Oppenheimer and hiswife Lee, myself, SecretaryPat Colby, and board membersJordan Linker, Rene Clement, and Richard Bossong. TheTable meets Fridays from 12:30on for lunch at the Edison HotelCaf on 47th Street between7th and 8th Avenue in TimesSquare. Our monthly meeting was

held on June at Mount Sinai.President Ken Ferst wasabsent, so First VP MargaretSteele started meeting at 7:30.

The rst order of businesswas our annual election of theBoard of Directors. This wentvery smoothly. AdmissionsChairman Bob Friedhofferannounced that we had twonew members to swear in. Theywere Ed Checkett and JaredMolton. Sworn in they were, welcomed by the assembly. Then First VP Margaret Steele, producer of this years Salute, gave signed posters fromour Salute staring ThomasSolomon to all those whoworked so hard on this years

show. Bill Gleason was singledout with an award and a specialaward was given to ThomasSolomon to a nice round ofapplause. George Silvermanannounced a special workshop.Other committee reports weregiven. The meeting was thenended with ritual. The after-meeting event

was The Willie SchneiderMemorial Lecture producedby Meir Yedid. Meir Yedidwas introduced by PA 1 Dean

Eric DeCamps. Because wehave many new members,Meir gave a beautiful historyof this lecture and the man ithonors. At times it was quitetouching, because it camefrom the heart. He then intro-duced the lecturer, Paul Hallas. One nice thing was that Paulslecture was lled with effectsthat were within the abilitiesof any of the fty people who

attended the lecture. It was awonderful lecture and night atthe PA 1. Tom KlemParent Assembly One Meetsthe rst Friday 8 PM at Mt.Sinai Medical Center, 1425Madison Avenue (96th Street),New York, New York.

2 COLOMBINILECTURESAN FRANCISCO, CAA second May meeting wasscheduled in order to haveAldo and Rachel Colombini

lecture as part of their FinalTour. It was well worth the ad-ditional meeting, because theColombinis not only are greatmagicians, they also have awonderful sense of humor. The repartee between Racheland Aldo kept us laughingwhile they bafed us withtheir magic. Rachel was veryopen about her recent majorsurgery and thanked us for ourthoughts, prayers, and contri-butions.

    Our regular June meeting hadan excellent teaching portion;

the subject was false shufesand false cuts. Corky LeValleebegan with a number of falseshufes that to the uniniti-ated looked like the real thing.Similarly, the false cuts had theappearance of true deck cuttingbut did nothing to rearrangethe cards. Rich Sequine addeda few cuts to round out theteaching program. The theme for the magic was

twofold. Since we held anauction at the May meeting,

members could show tricksthat they bought at the auctionor tricks purchased from theColombinis. Corky showedDeans Box, Rob Shapiropresented the Needle throughBalloon, and Hippo Lau dida nice presentation of a giantThree Card Monte. The Colom-binis were represented by JackLangdell doing Restless Cards,Stu Bacon showing Mind

Reading Past and Present, andWalt Johnson doing a nicemultiple cut and restored rope. The others brought magic

of their choosing: Rich andBob Kuhn did great thingswith cards, Bill Langell did amental effect with pennies, andTamaka made a card disappearfrom a metal box and appearin a previously shown emptycanister. The interesting aspectof Tamakas presentation wasthat the two pieces of apparatuswere well over seventy-veyears old and were recently

    88 JAY SANKEYLECTURE

ANN ARBOR/YPSILANTI,MI Friendly, warm, anddown to earth, Jay Sankey

started by talking about theimportance of interactingwith people, to have fun withpeople. His lecture consisted ofthree forms of close-up magic:traditional magic, mentalism, and bending.

    He started with a very funnycard trick, in which threeselected cards were mysterious-ly eaten by the four Queens.Then came a mentalism trickin which a card was picked;

the prediction was a red card, and then the chosen card endedup with the volunteers namewritten on it. For an exampleof bending, Jay showed aplastic spoon, turned it arounda couple of times, and showedthat the spoon had a twist in it.Jay also had plenty of other

examples of his creative magic a lot of it was his older stuff, but updated, with a few things Ihad never seen before. Overall,it was a great lecture and agreat night for the AAMC!Randy A. AUGUST 2011 1

ASSEMBLY NEWstarting us off with a spiraldisk that seemed to make RickAllens get larger and thensmaller for those who gazedat the disk. Immediately after,Zappo (thats me) performed acut-and-restored rope routinethat included a sweet methodof constructing a set of ropesto perform The Professors

Nightmare right in front of theaudience. Then Bob Holdridgeperformed two predictionroutines with, as usual, hiswell-crafted propsAnd Roy Pordo managed to

capture a wild white balloonbehind bars in a shoebox-sizedcage. With the help a ve-year-old guest spectator, Royburst the balloon and turned itvisibly into a cute little versionof Pep Le Pew.At that point, Jerry Bar-

rilleaux penetrated a pencilthrough both a dollar bill and

a lottery selection ticket in aneffort to nd the lucky winningnumbers. It turned out thedollar bill was completelyunharmed from the penetrationof the pencil.

The person from whom Jerryhad obtained the miracle justperformed was Mike DellaPenna, the President of theOakland Magic Circle, whofollowed with a dazzling actthat included an Okito coin-boxroutine, a four-Ace routine, amatrix routine, a giant-sizedcoin production, and (with thehelp of his blindfolded cardduck) the nding of a selectedcard.Following that performance,

Jerry Barrilleaux demon-strated the Trick of the Month(which he explained later in theevening after the guests hadleft). Chris Roe rounded outthe performance portion of thenight with a bold mind-readingeffect.

Following a brief pizza break,Jerry Barrilleaux explainedthe Trick of the Month, duringwhich he provided us withan exceptionally well madeset of sticks, made fromtimbers from his grandfathersdiamond mine. Although bothsides of rst one stick and lateranother were shown blank, by

saying the magic word Jerrywas able to make diamondsappear at will, jump back andforth between the sticks, anddisappear just as fast as hehad initially produced them. And, as usual with this feature, members present receivedthese props for free.During the mini-lecture that

ended the meeting, Zappo(thatsstillme) had a discussionabout several aspects of per-forming the cut-and-restoredrope and a direct follow-up ofThe Professors Nightmare.

    194 THE ALDO& RACHELCOLOMBINI

    LECTURE

YONKERS, NY Yourreporter has been to dozens oflectures in his sixty-plus yearsof performing magic and I cantrecall when I enjoyed a lectureas much as the one we weretreated to on June 15. Aldo andRachel Colombini arrived righton time with lots of goodiesand began their very wellplanned lecture by providingeach one present with a cupof champagne to toast us andthem as they drew near to theend of their fty-stop FarewellLecture Tour.

Their lecture was not onlyvery well programmed, eachof them taking turns in pre-senting and explaining themany effects they offered, but, from time to time, they alsoinserted commentaries on theirown lives and on their specialapproach to creating and per-forming magic. Their personal

remarks lifted the wholeevening to a rarely achievedlevel at which the tricks wereonly a part of the evening. Thiswas no mere dealer demo, but a sharing of some deep andpersonal and funny observa-tions on magic and on life.Throughout the evening,
