PUNJABI & HINDI LANGUAGE GROWING IN CANADA M ore than 200 languages were reported in the 2011 Census of Population as a home language or mother tongue. One-fifth of Canada's population, or nearly 6,630,000 people, spoke a language other than English or French at home in 2011, either alone or in some combination with English or French. Of this total, 6,390,000 spoke an immigrant language at home, more than 213,000 people spoke an Aboriginal language, and nearly 25,000 reported using a sign language. Also of this total, almost one-third or 2,145,000 people re- ported that the only language they spoke at home was a lan- guage other than English or French, that is, a non-official lan- guage. The remaining two-thirds spoke a non-official language in combination with either English or French. The 2,145,000 people who spoke only a non-official language accounted for 6.5% of the population, unchanged from 2006. In total, 58.0% of the population or 19,225,000 spoke only English at home, while 18.2% or 6,043,000 spoke only French. Both proportions were down slightly from 2006. The use of multiple languages at home has increased. In 2011, 11.5% of the population reported using English and a language other than French, up from 9.1% in 2006. Similarly, 1.3% of the population reported using French and a language other than English in 2011, up from 1.0%. Most of these people lived in Quebec. The home languages showing the strongest growth between 2006 and 2011 were primarily Asian. The population that re- ported speaking the Philippine-based language Tagalog in- creased by 64%, the highest growth. Nearly 279,000 people reported speaking Tagalog most often in 2011, up from 170,000 five years earlier. Seven other language groups also saw their numbers increase by more than 30%. They included Mandarin (+50%), Arabic (+47%), Hindi (+44%), Creole languages (+42%), Bengali (+40%), Persian (+33%), and Spanish (+32%). Four languages showed a slight decline in the number of people who reported speaking them most often at home. Three of them, Italian, Polish and Greek, are spoken for the most part by early immigrant groups and their descendants. A 23-year-old model, Bidushi Dash Barde, was found murdered in her apartment in Andheri on Monday. Bidushi, who belonged from Chennai, was at home alone on the ill-fated day when her husband Kedar Barde, a software engineer found her lying in a pool of blood at their residence. Initially, Mumbai police had registered a case of accidental death but on discovering wounds on her body and based on the postmortem reports, they re-registered it as a case of murder. Talking to a source Additional Commissioner Vishwas Nangre-Patil said, "A female resident of the building has told us that she clearly saw a visitor at Bidushi's door. Based on her statement and the nature of injuries sustained by Bidushi, we have registered a case of murder on Tuesday." The police said, "Kedar noticed that the lights were switched off but the television set was on. He then came across Bidushi's blood- splattered body in the passage between the bathroom and the bedroom. A glass shelf was lying broken near her and glass shards were found protruding from Bidushi's cheek, jaw, neck and chin. There were also fingernail marks on her face as well as head injuries." Bidushi's father said that his daughter was very happy in Mumbai and had never fought with anyone. So he wondered what might have led to the murder. We hope police get to crack the case soon! Police sources said Nishan had broken down after being nabbed from the Baga beach in Goa. He was in tears even during his flight back to Delhi. Shruti, on the other hand, put up a fight at the beach. She refused to get herself medically examined or board the flight to Delhi. Shruti is quoted as having told the police: "How can I leave him? I have to stay with him. I have to save him." On her return to Faridkot, she refused to go back to her parent's home or undergo a medical examination, thereby weakening the prosecution's case. Police investigation has so far suggested that it is a case of a love story gone awry due to objections from the girl's family. Nishan, a dropout from Lawrence School, Sanawar, used to follow Shruti, who belonged to a middle-class family, on her way to school. Their friendship soon developed to the extent that he used to drive Shruti to and from St Mary's Convent School in Faridkot, say sources. The friendship was not liked by Shruti's parents, which prompted Shruti and Nishan to leave their home in June, sources add. They lived in Kharar for over a month, posing as husband and wife. Shruti was recovered by the police and handed over to her parents, but their affair did not end there. Nishan gave up eating for several days, forcing his mother to visit Shruti's parents and offer a matrimonial alliance between the two. Police sources said Shruti's abduction happened three days after her parents refused the offer. Contd. on Page 13

page 3 TRIBUTE: KINGOF ROMANCELEAVES A VOID INBOLLYWOOD

Following the demise of legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra onSunday evening, a pall of gloom descended upon the entirefilm industry. The iconic director, who had just turned 80 on

September 27, and was eagerly awaiting the release of his lastdirectorial Jab Tak Hai Jaan, died, literally speaking, with his boots

Yash Chopra's last journey

on; something he had always wanted during his lifetime. At around 9pm on Sunday, the late movie mogul was ferried in

an ambulance from Lilavati Hospital to Studio 3 of Yash Raj Studios.Incidentally, this was the same place where he had announced hisretirement last month while revisiting his film journey with Shah

Rukh Khan. Immediate family and friends of the late Yash Chopra, which included Karan Johar, Rani Mukerji, Amitabh Bachchan andShah Rukh Khan stayed by his side throughout the night of Sunday. In fact, Shah Rukh, who had been one of the first ones to reachLilavati Hospital after hearing news of his passing away, did notleave the late Chopra's side till around 5'o'clock on Monday morning.Amitabh Bachchan too was there for the longest time.

Between 9am and 12pm yesterday, the filmmaker's friends andalmost the whole film fraternity dropped by at the studio to pay theirlast respects. Among those who came were Rekha, Aishwarya RaiBachchan, Vidya Balan, Mukesh Bhatt, Pankaj Kapoor with his wifeand son Shahid, Sohail Khan and wife, Sunil Shetty, Arjun Rampaland wife, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, PriyankaChopra, Imran Khan with wife Avantika, Tabu, David Dhawan withhis son Varun, Kajol, Prakash Jha and Subhash Ghai.

Thereafter, at around 2.10pm, the body was carried from thestudio to the Pawan Hans crematorium in Juhu, with Uday Choprasitting next to the driver. Shah Rukh, Karan Johar and Aditya Choprawere in the same ambulance along with Uday while Rani's car followedclosely behind them.

A separate bus was also hired to take the entire YRF staff andothers from the studio to the cremation ground. There was tightsecurity to ensure no untoward incident happened. The ambulancereached Pawan Hans with the traffic police and security keeping astrict vigil. Outside the studio and the cremation ground, a hugecrowd had gathered for a final glimpse of one of the industry's mostcelebrated directors. One who taught the masses how to love andportrayed romance like no other in the business.

Sameera's Chakravyuh itemnumber to raise temperature

From what we hear, Sexy Sameera Reddy has certainly goneall out to make the song Kunda Khol a once-in-a-lifetimeperformance in Prakash

Jha's Chakravyuh. The song, choreographed by GaneshAcharya set and shot in Bhopalwill see Sameera in a purely desiavatar and has some fast pacedsteps that are sure to enthraland entice the audience. But itwas not an easy task for theactor as it took long hours ofpractice spread over two weeksand draining her outcompletely, resulting in drasticweight loss, Sam still thinks itwas all worth it after seeing thefinal take of the song.

Tribute: King of romance leaves a void in BollywoodA legendary filmmaker, Yash Chopra changed the face of romance in Hindi cinema to become a brand in Bollywood with numerous

hits under his belt in his five-decade long illustrious career. Chopra(80), who was one of the pillars in Bollywood, directed some ofIndian cinema's most successful and iconic films, including the action

thriller "Deewar" which established megastar Amitabh Bachchan as the "angryyoung man". The hit duo of Chopra and Bachchan worked together again inromantic drama "Kabhi Kabhie" and drama "Trishul". If Shah Rukh Khan is calledthe King, Chopra was definitely the kingmaker and gave support and fillip tomany an artiste's career and making them into superstars. Although he began hiscareer making different kinds of films, Chopra is today known mostly for theromantic films like 'Silsila', 'Chandni' and 'Dilwale Duhania Le Jayenge'. The term 'Yash Chopra romance' is used to typify the kind of romantic films thefilmmaker gave birth to in Bollywood. Considered among one of the greatestfilmmakers in the history of Hindi cinema, Chopra's career has spanned over fivedecades and over 50 films. Beginning his career as an assistant director, Chopramade his directorial debut with "Dhool Ka Phool" in 1959, a melodrama aboutillegitimacy. Chopra has won several film awards, including six National Film Awardsand eleven Filmfare awards including four Filmfare Award for Best Director. Encouraged by the success of his films, the Chopra brothersmade several more movies together during the late 50s and 60s. Chopra rose to fame in 1965 after the commercially and critically successfuldrama, "Waqt", which pioneered the concept of multi-starrers in Bollywood.

Farah teams up with Boman again

Speculations havebeen rife aboutFarah Khan's next

directorial ventureHappy New Year. It isknown that the directorhas finalised her best-friend Shah Rukh Khanas the hero of theproject, which is toutedas one of her mostambitious projects sofar. But the lesser knownfact is that there will benot just one but fiveheroes in the movie. And while Farah is searching for suitable faces, buzz is that she has roped in Boman Iranito play one of the four characters. Farah in an exclusive chat spilled the beans about thefilm. She says, "I am done with the scripting of the film. We are in the pre-production stageand will soon be flying to Dubai for seeing some locations. This film is going to be biggerthan Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om." On being probed about the cast of the film, shesays, "Shah Rukh Khan has been finalised as the male lead.

MUMBAI/BUREAU NEWS: Despite the myriad controversies surrounding the Indian Premier League, with the latest being the termination of Deccan Chargers' franchise, Shah Rukh Khan is optimistic thatthe events will have no negative impact on brand IPL. "When you create a brand like this (IPL) where high-level cricket is being played, you got to have strict rules... Some of the things that have happened withDeccan Chargers are unfortunate and more sobecause it was because of their other businessesand not cricket. I will miss Ram, Gayatri and her momwho are huge cricket fans," Khan said. For allfranchises in the IPL, the stakes are high as thetournament is the highest-paying domestic T20 eventin the world. Could the wobbling economy and thegrowing skepticism on the back of such controversiesleave the sponsors jittery? The Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) co-owner refuted, saying: "I don't think it willaffect the brand. Every year there are media speculationsabout sponsor issues and falling TRPs, but all teams will have logos and we'll get the money and people willcome to watch IPL." "This has been talked about from the second year that it's (IPL) going to die like mystardom. But it goes on and will go on. IPL is an exclusive club in a country of one billion people with just8 to 10 members. Cricket is the most watched game and gets the maximum eyeballs," he added. Shah Rukhalso denied buying stakes in any other team. "I don't have any other sports team. People come and meetand we discuss to see how sports can be promoted vis-a-vis me. All I own is KKR, that's it," he said.

BRAND IPL IS HERE TO STAY, SAYS SRK

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2012 breaking news

WASHINGTON/BUREAU NEWS: American liberals are chortlingin delight over the discomfiture in right-wing circles arising from theextra-marital caper of an Indian-American ultraconservative whosehatchet job on President Barack Obama has become one of the top-grossing documentaries of all time. Dinesh D'Souza, a Mumbai-bornacademic, whose movie Obama: 2016 has grossed nearly $34 millionand pitchforked him into the limelight in a heated election season, resigned as President of King's College earlier this week, afterallegations marital impropriety.

According to conservative critics who evidently fell out withhim, D'Souza recently attended a Christian conference in SouthCarolina in the company of another woman and introduced her ashis fiancee, even though he was still legally married to another woman. The magazine which ''broke'' the ''story'' also alleged that D'Souzashared a room with her in a hotel during the conference, a changethat he has vehemently denied and claimed to have receipts for twoseparate rooms. Under any other circumstances, the whole affairwould have been received with a shrug if not laughed off altogether, but D'Souza's Christian evangelism and his hatchet job of President

Obama has so irked liberals that they have received and relayed thistale of extra-marital imprudence with great relish.

''As an atheist, I find it very awkward to see that my prayers for

Dinesh D'Souza's public humiliation have apparently beenanswered,'' tweeted one critic. ''Ah, The Glass House,'' said KeithOlbermann, a political commentator on MSNBC known to skewerconservatives. D'Souza meantime has offered tortured explanations, saying he ''had no idea that it is considered wrong in Christian circlesto be engaged prior to being divorced, even though in a state ofseparation and in divorce proceedings."

According to the expose though, he filed for divorce the daythe journal which eventually ran the story phone him to seek hiscomments on the incident.

In a post on the Fox News website, titled "I am not having anaffair," D'Souza explained that he and Denise Joseph were engaged, and he had met her only three months ago after he had separatedfrom wife Dixie D'Souza more than two years ago. ''Obviously I wouldnot have introduced Denise as my fiance at a Christian apologeticsconference if I had thought or known I was doing something wrong,''he said, adding, much to the mirth of his detractors, that '''as a resultof all this, and to avoid even the appearance of impropriety, Deniseand I have decided to suspend our engagement.''

NEW YORK: Former Goldman Sachs director Rajat Gupta, 63,was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday by a Manhattanfederal court for insider trading. He will also have to pay a $5 millionfine. The verdict was a semi-victory for Gupta and legions of hissupporters who had fought hard and long to get him a lenient sentence.Prosecutors had been seeking 10 years in prison for Gupta passing onillegal tips, while his own lawyers argued he should get probation andcommunity service because he didn't actually profit from the crimes.

Rajat Gupta: "History is full of examples of good men who do badthings."

Gupta's sentence is in line with more moderate prison terms handeddown by Judge Rakoff in other recent insider trading cases. The judgesummarised how most people view Gupta who rose swiftly through theranks of corporate America and gave back generously to the world.

'A good man'

"I think the record, which the government really doesn't dispute, bears out that he is a good man," said Judge Rakoff during the hearing."But the history of this country and the history of the world, I'm afraid,is full of examples of good men who do bad things," added the judge.Gupta is scheduled to report to prison on 8 January 2013. He was alsoordered to pay a $5 million fine. He would face one year of supervisedrelease after finishing his prison term. Gupta, who was convicted inJune of three counts of securities fraud relating to tips about Goldmanand one count of conspiracy, didn't trade or profit from passing secretshe learned, while serving on the board of directors of Goldman Sachs,to Raj Rajaratnam, the founder of hedge fund Galleon. One of theallegations made against Gupta is that following a Goldman boardmeeting on 23 September 2008, he informed Rajaratnam thatbillionaire investor Warren Buffett was going to make a $5 billioninvestment in Goldman.

It is not illegal to have friends. It is not illegal to help a friendeither. Indian culture encourages that. Help can be transactional, where both sides simultaneously do things for each other. It can

also be one-sided, with only one party doing the other a favour. That isn't illegal and is common amongst friends.

Why then has the country come up in arms against RobertVadra? Why does it give people a sick-in-the-gut feeling whenhearing about his 600-fold increase in wealth in the last couple ofyears? Why are so many people angry over him buying luxuryapartments, hotel stakes and land, offered as sweet deals from afriend called DLF?

The India Against Corruption (IAC) has done a gutsy andcommendable job in bringing these findings to the forefront. Vadra'sshady dealings were common gossip in banking circles for years. The media knew it well too. However, it is the IAC that crystallizedthe outrage, presented some documents and made it a topic ofhousehold discussion.

IAC's next move, however, demanding an independentinvestigation into Vadra, is probably going to disappoint them.Firstly, a fair and independent investigation is nearly impossible inIndia against the Gandhi family, especially when they are in power.Second, and more important, is even if a fair investigation isconducted, there may not be much illegality in what Vadra did(ignoring the charges of fraudulent financial statement, as alleged insome news reports). After all, Vadra made a friend in DLF, and DLFhelped Vadra out. That's all the paper trail may reveal, despiteexhaustive investigations. In fact, when powerful people help eachother, they are smart enough to keep the paper trail sacrosanct.Expensive lawyers and CAs work hard to ensure the deals have asemblance of legality, whatever the intent.

Proving quid-pro-quo is going to be even more difficult. Acompany like DLF has a vast presence. It needs the government tocooperate with it in hundreds of places. DLF does not need to do aquid pro quo or transactional help. It would rather do favors andmake friends in the government. Favours, as the eponymouscharacter in the novel The Godfather would say, that could be utilizedat a later date in the form of return favours.

In fact, proximity and access to the family are of huge value. If

When expensive favours from friends go too farDLF seniors are seen hanging out with the Gandhis, would not theCongress CM in Haryana view DLF's requests, well, a littledifferently? Neither DLF, nor the family, nor the Haryana governmentmay ever sit down and spell out how each will help the other. Theydon't need to, for they are friends. There's nothing illegal about it,right? In fact, this lack of, or hard to prove illegality is the cornerstone

of the defence put forward by the Congress' army of spokespersonsand eager-beaver sycophants. 'It's a private matter' or 'prove giveand take' are often the arguments given. It is hard to fault themcompletely, for the legal bases are probably well covered, or at leastvery difficult to prove otherwise. And yet, what happened is ethically

wrong. Politicians work for the benefit of common people, not fortheir friends, business partners and relatives. At least that is theassumption people had about the Gandhi family. People also assumedthat they believed in simplicity and were above personal greed, butthat doesn't seem to be the case. After all, what use is wearingsimple cotton sarees and kurtas, implying simplicity, when your familymembers are accumulating hundreds of crores by exploiting politicalpower?

There will be a huge price the Gandhis and Congress will payfor this. Ethics may not matter in courts, but do matter in the heartsof people. A family that betrays trust will pay the price in the nextelection. It may even lose that trust forever.

However, the Gandhis are by no means alone in this. Nor is thisjust a Congress issue. A large number of politicians have lost trackof the idea that every profession in this world has ethics - it may notbe illegal to break them but still is definitely wrong. A doctor musttreat his patient as soon as possible, it is assumed, under ethicalmedical practice. But if he delays treatment, it would be hard toprove it illegal. A teacher must try to teach her students well, thoughif she doesn't, it won't be illegal. Society needs ethics as much aslaws to function well. A politician should think a hundred timesbefore forging friendships with people with whom there might be afuture conflict of interest, and a million times before they accept anysubstantial favors. Favours usually oblige one to return them, and ifthat means hurting the interests of people that put you in thatposition, the effects can be devastating. Vadra's foolish greed andlove for DLF, and the other family members' tacit approval, will costthe Gandhis. The cost will be in terms of reputation and esteem.Wise people know these are priceless and far more valuable thananything quoted in rupees per square feet.

Matthew Hayden in his typical fashion is sulking over themeritorious order (Member of the order) of Australia awardto Tendulkar and is of the firm opinion Sachin does not

deserve the honor. His reasons, lame as ever. Citing the award assacred and lamenting over Sachin not living in Australia, Haydenhas displayed a quintessential streak amongst most Australians.Hayden at his sarcastic best remarked that had Sachin been livingin Australia he could even be awarded the Prime Minister’s gong.Aussies, remain and continue to remain the most ‘inward looking’society in this world. Cut off from the rest of the worldgeographically, content with theirown peculiar wild life, fauna andflora not to be found anywhereelse, the average Aussie rarelythinks beyond his beer, barbecue,Aussie Rules football and whenthe season changes, cricket.Sachin is not the first Indian toreceive this award; he is thesecond after the noted formerAttorney General Soli Sorabjee toreceive the honor. In the past, over 275 Non Australians havebeen appointed to the order ofAustralia over four levels that theaward confers, so why is Haydencribbing about this award to aniconic Indian who is recognized by every Australian?

Hayden has displayed extremely poor sportsmanship with hisrecent boorish attitude. In fact, the award for Tendulkar should beseen as a step to cementing closer ties with India especially after aflurry of racial attacks on Indians in the recent past. Australiacontinues to attract a large number of Indian students who annuallyspend a colossal amount on University fees and still land up drivingtaxis after their Masters or return home jobless thereafter. A fewmanage to secure sound jobs after a lot of struggle. Around 284,000international students were granted visas in the first three quartersas of the financial year ending 31st March 2012, an increase ofaround 5% as compared to the same period in the previous year.Indians currently rank fourth in Australia’s migrant community. There are enough and more Indians who currently reside, workand contribute towards Australia’s betterment. It can be said that itwas only as late as 1973 that Australia abolished its formal WhiteAustralia policy. Australia in comparison to most other colonizedcountries is a more recent multi cultural, multi ethnic embracingnation. The Aboriginals, the indigenous people of Australia arestill not treated at par and continue to be discriminated in mattersof health and education. There is a program to close the gap in thenext twenty-five years. One may argue that we Indians remain more

Op/Ed: Hayden's problem withSachin, quintessential Aussie

racist than anyone else within our own cocoons of caste, subcaste and religions and hence we have no right to look into thefaults of another. Maybe so, but, when India honored NelsonMandela in 1990 with it’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna,India rejoiced at this gesture, even if there were questions raisedon the constitutional basis of the award to a non-Indian. We cametogether as a country and took utmost pride in the honor that wasbestowed on the great leader.

Tendulkar is most certainly not the greatest Indian to walk onthe face of this planet, but he is most certainly an outstandingIndian in his field of chosen profession. He remains one that

commands the respect of mostAustralians and let Hayden notpretend that is not to be the case.Even the great Don includedTendulkar as the only cricketer ofcurrent times in his best-everlineup. I have witnessed time andover a hush that would descendonto the hallowed grounds of theMCG as the little Master wouldmake his way in, the racist tauntsto the Indian audience at thegrounds would stop, no morechoruses of “ where is your visa?”would fill the Melbourne air, thetruce would last so long asTendulkar occupied centre stage,

once he left, the Aussies would continue to do what they do best.Bully. “Great batsman he may be, as the Prime Minister pointedout in New Delhi yesterday with exquisite timing, but sections ofthe Australian cricket community still remember the central role heplayed in the Andrew Symonds scandal. Tendulkar lied to anInternational Cricket Council (ICC) appeal following thesuspension of Harbhajan Singh for racially abusing AndrewSymonds during the Sydney Test in 2008 to save face for hiscountry and his team mate, who was a serial offender,” wroteAustralian columnist Malcolm Conn. If the ‘Monkeygate’ scandalis something that Hayden and other Aussies are still holding onto,it is time for them to move on since Symonds himself has happilyplayed for Mumbai Indians along with Harbhajan and underTendulkar. There were no problems. Australian Prime Minister JuliaGillard’s recent visit to India was a lot more interesting for the fallthat she had near Gandhiji’s memorial second to announcing thehonor for Tendulkar. The Prime Minister succumbs to gravityscreeched most headlines and I wish most Australians irked withthe award too succumb to gravity like their Prime Minister. It’sabout time they do. There was a reason why the great Don thoughthe was looking at a ‘mirror-image’ of himself when he watchedTendulkar play. Most Aussies are yet to come to terms with this.

Kejriwal (the Joker in the political pack; henceforth abbreviated to just Joker) has positioned himself on the anti-corruption platform.Very little has emerged about his party’s economic priorities. But a few statements of his have emerged and what has come out sofar indicates that he is yet another Left-of-Left politician. More anti-corporate than even Mamata; more anti-reform than even the

BJP; in short more Leftist than the Left and Mamata put together! Here’s a smattering of what has emerged: Joker is against power tariffincreases. In Delhi, he went so far as to organize a protest against the Delhi government’s recent increases in power, forgetting that powertariffs had not been increased for so many years. He in fact, made it a politicalissue by creating a drama around “restoring” power at the home of a power thief. He made some bizarre observation that power discoms are making enormousprofits and alleged some sort of criminal conspiracy against Sheila Dixitpersonally (that she was not allowing discoms to lower tariffs). He choseto ignore the facts of the matter as usual; and of course demonstrated nounderstanding of how governments undertaken several programs, many of which need to be funded through “profits” (if any) from other programs. This indicates a clear preference for mindless socialism; and a disdain for evenbasic economics. I would have liked to hear Joker say what he would like toover-price so that things like power could be under-priced or subsidized. But thatwas not forthcoming. One gathers the impression that just like all Left parties, and more recently the BJP, Kejriwal wants prices to remain stuck in the past. Howthe government should reduce fiscal deficit then is a mystery.

Kejriwal’s party looks even more Leftist than Mamata’s!

Like New York, Peel’s vision includesimproving the food environment, making spaces more comfortable forphysical activity and active transportation, and promoting buildingdesign that encourages physical activity. Peel will focus on four prioritysettings: pre-school, schools, workplaces and the built environment.“Where we live, learn and work affects our health,” said RegionalCouncilor Elaine Moore, Co-Chair of the Health Services Committee.“Right now, those places can make it far too easy for people to makeunhealthy choices. The Region of Peel is committed to building a futurewhere our communities not only encourage healthy, active behaviours, but also make those decisions the easy ones.” Childhood and adultobesity, which increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovasculardisease and some cancers, has been steadily increasing in Canada overthe last 20-plus years. The prevalence of diabetes in Peel is already highand with current obesity trends, it is projected that one in six Peel residentswill be diagnosed with diabetes by 2025. “Trends in obesity represent amajor threat to the health of current and future generations of Peelresidents,” continues Dr. Mowat. “It is time to change our approach.”

VANCOUVER/BUREAU NEWS: Rona Ambrose, Minister of PublicWorks and Government Services and Minister for Status of Womenand the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritageand Official Languages and Regional Minister for British Columbia, took part in a groundbreaking ceremony at Vancouver Shipyards aspart of the shipyard’s $200-million infrastructure investment for theNational Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS).

“It is with great pleasure that we take part in this historicceremony,” said Minister Ambrose. “One year ago, VancouverShipyards was selected to build Canada’s non-combat vessels andtoday we witness this important milestone, a major investment thatwill create jobs and enable Vancouver Shipyards to efficiently buildlarge vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian CoastGuard.”

“Today’s investment demonstrates Vancouver Shipyards’commitment to the West Coast economy,” said Minister Moore.“Years of stable employment for local workers and world-classshipbuilding facilities can only mean good news for the region.”

Vancouver Shipyards will proceed with major upgrades, including four new fabrication buildings, a shipbuilding gantry craneand a load out pier. The announced investment is the result of acommitment made under the NSPS and was a key component of theevaluation process. In order to most efficiently build the ships ofthe federal fleet, the shipyards need to achieve a “target state.” The

target state is a level of efficiency that is internationally recognized, and set by First Marine International. The main purpose of thisrequirement was to select shipyards that were ready to invest inbecoming capable of building Canada’s vessels. As per VancouverShipyards’ commitment, these investments are funded entirely bythe shipyard, which means no cost to Canada.

Vancouver Shipyards’ infrastructure improvements will allow itto build the Canadian Coast Guard’s science vessels and polaricebreakers and the Royal Canadian Navy’s joint support ships moreefficiently, while delivering the best value to Canada.

The shipyard estimates that this investment is expected to createapproximately 1000 jobs over the next three years, proving that theNSPS is already showing signs of being an economic booster forthe West Coast. The NSPS—the largest procurement sourcingarrangement in Canadian history—is also expected to createthousands of high-value jobs in shipbuilding and related industriesacross the country.

In June 2010, the Government of Canada made a strategicdecision to support the Canadian marine industry and build shipsfor the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Coast Guard, here inCanada. Since the announcement of the shipyards selected to buildCanada’s large vessels, Canada has established strategicrelationships with the shipyards by signing the umbrella agreementsand has begun negotiations on the ships to be built.

NEW EVIDENCE REVEALS CANADIAN WELLBEING ON THE DECLINETORONTO: The recession hitCanadians harder than economicnumbers such as GDP haveindicated and the decline in ourwellbeing continues despitesubsequent economic recovery, says the Honourable RoyRomanow, advisory board co-chair for the Canadian Index ofWellbeing (CIW), housed in theFaculty of Applied HealthSciences at the University ofWaterloo.

With the release of theirsecond composite index, the CIWreports a 24% drop in Canadianwellbeing between 2008 and 2010.Further, from 1994 to 2010,Canada's economy, as measuredby Gross Domestic Product (GDP)grew by a robust 28.9%, whileimprovements in Canadianwellbeing over the same 17-yearperiod saw only a small 5.7%increase.

"The findings uncover sometroubling truths about theconnection between our economyand our wellbeing," saysRomanow. "When Canada'seconomy was thriving, Canadianssaw only modest improvements intheir overall quality of life, butwhen the economy faltered ourwellbeing took a disproportionatestep backward. It begs thequestion: Are our governmentstruly responding to the needs andvalues of everyday Canadians?"

The CIW report: 'How areCanadians Really doing?' tracks 64separate indicators within eightinterconnected domains central tothe lives of Canadians:Community Vitality; DemocraticEngagement; Education;Environment; HealthyPopulations; Leisure and Culture;Living Standards; and Time Use.

The report shows that since

2008 we have experienced asignificant drop in ourstandard of living along with

further declines in the health ofour environment and ourability to participate in leisure

PROMOTING SUSTAINABILITY OFONTARIO'S WORKERS'COMPENSATION SYSTEM

TORONTO: Ontario is moving toward amending the WorkplaceSafety and Insurance Act (WSIA) to promote the long-termstability of the workers' compensation system.

Proposed changes to the WSIA would, if passed, allowthe Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) to:

Review Loss of Earnings benefits after 72 months --currently benefits are generally 'locked in' after 72 months, even if an injured worker's condition improves or they rejointhe workforce.

Base survivor benefits on the average earnings of thedeceased worker's occupation or trade rather than the statutoryminimum currently provided under the Act.

A financially stable workplace safety and insurance systemis part of the McGuinty government's commitment to the safetyand well-being of Ontario workers and to a fair and balancedinsurance system for injured workers and their employers.

and culture activities. Evengrowth areas such as healthand education began to showsigns of weakening.

"The recession andsluggish recovery have taken abig toll on Canadians," saysCIW co-chair, the HonourableMonique Bégin. "Thedeterioration in job quality andeconomic security, soaringlong-term unemployment andpersistent income inequalityspeak to the growing uneasefelt coast to coast . Ourgovernments must recognizethis reali ty as they makedecisions on how to steer usforward, particularly givenpredictions of an extendedperiod of weak economicgrowth."

According to the report, not all is doom and gloom.Violent crime is at its lowest

level since 1994, droppingevery year since 2001 andproperty crime, also at i tslowest level, is down 48% from1994. The percentage ofCanadians who feel safewalking after dark is at i tshighest level since that year.Canadians continue to reportan increased sense ofbelonging to theircommunities. "Despite therecession, our sense ofcommunity vitality continuesto grow - this speaks to whowe are as Canadians," saysRomanow. "We recognize oursurvival and progress dependon our ability to come togetherand remain united around sharedvalues. Understanding howCanadians are really doing iscritical for any governmentmaking decisions on how wemove forward in our recovery."

"They are not bringingthese issues out not on moralgrounds but on corrupt grounds.I congratulate Singh for

confessing this. He has evidenceof corruption (against senior BJPleaders' kin)... BJP has evidenceagainst Vadra and Singh. Butboth have an understanding," hesaid.

Meanwhile, protesters, mostof them from the Haryana wingof IAC, claimed that scores ofactivists were injured in thepolice action.

The protesters breachedthe barricade and marchedtowards Hooda's residence whenthey were stopped by police. However, the activists insistedon marching ahead and theyreached close to the residence.

CONMEN GRAB NRI LAND;10 BOOKEDFATEHGARH SAHIB: Despite tall claims made by Punjab gov-ernment to protect the proper ties of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs),frauds continue to come to the fore in the state. Police haveregistered a case against 10 persons, including relatives of anNRI, for fraudulently selling his agriculture land at Sirhind.Even though the Punjab revenue depar tment officers are duty-bound to verify the identity of NRIs before conducting any muta-tion of their proper ty, in this case no verification was done andan unidentified person posing as NRI got the mutation done fromthe revenue depar tment. Though the buyer and seller have beenbooked, no action has been taken against the erring revenuedepar tment officers.Jagdip Singh of Sirhind, who has been staying in Hong Kong forthe past several years, had appointed Karnvir Singh as his legalcaretaker of his 25 kanal agriculture land in Sirhind. Last week,Karnvir received a call from a friend that some unidentified per-sons had taken possession of the land and when he enquiredfrom local revenue depar tment office, he learned that his unclehad sold off his land. When he spoke to his uncle in Hong Kong, he denied havingknowledge of any such sale following which Karnvir approachedFatehgarh Sahib SSP for action. During investigation, it came tolight that Inderpal Singh, nephew of Jagdip, along with his wifeSuman, and some other persons had made a fake voter identitycard, PAN card and other documents of his NRI uncle and soldthe land by introducing a conman as his uncle in the local rev-enue depar tment office."We have registered a case against 10 persons, including rela-tives of the complainant. SONIA’S LAND ACQUISITION VIEWSRAISE WORRIES FOR INDIA INC

NEW DELHI: Congress supremoSonia Gandhi's recommendationto increase the consent requiredfrom landowners for acquisitionof land for private projects to 80%has worried India industry whichsaid the move, if implemented, willpush up project costs, delays andhurt industrial growth.

Just two days after aministerial panel, headed bySharad Pawar, said that consentof 67% land owners would beenough for the government toacquire land for private projects,

the Congress presidentrecommended to the PMO that itshould be increased to 80%. Onlyin case of acquisition for publicprivate partnership (PPP) projectsthe threshold could be diluted to67%, if the ownership of the landremained with the government.

"We had made arecommendation of 60% ofconsensus required for bothprivate and PPP projects. But then67% or two-third approval was agood move too. If it is increasedto 80%, it will be very difficult for

industry to acquire land," saidChandrajit Banerjee, directorgeneral of the Confederation ofIndian Industry ( CII).

"India already faces a lot ofissues relating to landacquisitions and land costs. Thiswill add to the problems further,"said Banerjee.

Indian industry is alreadyreeling under the impact of a sharpslowdown, high interest rates, delay in implementation of policiesand rising input costs. Growth hasstalled and latest data shows thatfactory output in August rose2.7%.

Industry groups said that theproposal may "not be realistic" asincreasing the consensus limitwould severely impact industrialgrowth in the country.

"The crux of the matter is notwhat the threshold limit would be,but that the government has toremember the underlyingphilosophy - industry in Indianeeds to be more competitive. It

has to be a realistic policy as thereis naturally a shift from agricultureto industry for jobs," said RVKanoria, president of theFederation of Indian Chambers ofCommerce and Industry (Ficci).

He said Ficci will send acrossits views once the governmentfinalizes the rules and the industrygroup would want thegovernment to retain theconsensus level at 67%. TheAssociated Chamber of Commerceand Industry (Assocham) saidthat while it welcomed theprovision of 67% consent for PPPprojects, the move to raise it to 80%for private projects is"unreasonable and irrational" asit would cause substantial delaysto project implementation.

"Getting consent from 80%land owners will be very difficult,if not impossible. Therefore, theconsent of 65% of families of theaffected area should beprescribed," said D S Rawat, secretary general of Assocham.Indian origin teen in US wins honour for solar device

MUMBAI: Fourteen-year-old Deepika Kurup of Indian origin won'America's Young Scientist' title on Tuesday.

Kurup, who lives in Nashua, Boston, won the prestigiousaward along with a cash prize of $25,000 for designing anaffordable water purifier that runs on solar power.

She intends to use a part of her award to deploy her prototypein countries facing shortage of potable water such as India.Kurup's parents hail from Trivandrum in Kerala.

Kurup, a Std IX student from Nashua high school, competedwith nine other finalists in the 'Discovery Education 3M YoungScientist Challenge' and emerged as the winner after three rounds. The finalists were mentored by scientists at 3M for three months."One of the challenges was to create prototypes using 3Mproducts.

We were asked to come up with solutions to problems facedin the world. In this round, I designed a light-weight, non-inflammable spacecraft," said Kurup. Her invention uses twochemicals - titanium oxide and zinc oxide - which, when hit bysunlight, undergo a chemical change producing hydroxyl radicals

that can destroy certain bacteria. Her innovation harnesses solarenergy to disinfect contaminated water.

Deepika's mother, Meena Pradeep, said, "She read manyresearch papers before designing the purifier. She has always goodin academics and the captain of the Science and Math teams atschool." She met US President Barrack Obama during her stint atthe 3M Innovation centre.

NEW DELHI: Hours after Delhi Police put the suspected IndianMujahideen terrorist Fasih Mohammed under arrest followinghis depor tation, India on Monday said that he was a very impor-tant catch and Saudi Arabia had fully cooperated with New Delhiin this case.Reacting over depor tation, home secretary R K Singh said FasihMohammed was depor ted by Saudi Arabia only after the ac-cused served sentence there for some minor crime. His depor-tation was an excellent example of cooperation from Saudi Arabia,he added.Singh, however, did not elaborate on the kind of crime Fasihmight have been committed there.Home secretary said Saudi Arabia had never denied deportingthe suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorist who acted as facilita-tor for the terror outfit cadres who were arrested by Delhi Policelate last year in connection with attack in Delhi and Bangalore.Saudi Arabia had only asked for some time for processing theIndian request of depor ting him, said Singh.Elaborating on his role a bit, the home secretary said Fasih usedto involve in providing shelters to other Indian Mujahideen cad-res and acting as communicators for the group using differentchannels.Fasih, after being in detention for five months in Saudi Arabia, was taken into custody from Delhi airpor t on his arrival from theGulf country.India had sought depor tation of Fasih from Saudi Arabia and alsogot an Interpol Red Corner notice issued against him.Bihar-born Fasih -- an engineer by profession -- is alleged tohave been involved in the Chinnaswamy Stadium blast in Ban-galore and the shooting near Jama Masjid (Delhi), both in 2010,and is wanted by Delhi and Karnataka police.Fasih's cropped up during the interrogation of suspected IM ter-rorists arrested during the last nine months.

Shinde accuses Pakistan of helpingterrorists sneak into India

NEW DELHI: Home ministerSushil Kumar Shinde on Sundayattacked Pakistan for fomentingterror in India, accusing theneighbour of helping infiltrationbids into Indian territory andorganizing attacks on militaryconvoys in J&K to spread fear.

The development is beingseen as a toughening of stanceby India on cross-borderterrorism after recent attempts ofnormalizing ties through bilateraltrade negotiations and visaagreements.

The recent past had seenvery little terror rhetoric directedat Pakistan, except foroccasional assertions onbringing the 26/11 accused tobook. Sunday's statement fromthe home minister, however, is anindication of India's growingimpatience with Pakistan despiteits assurance of cracking down

on terror infrastructure in itscountry, sources in the securityestablishment said.

Speaking on the sidelines ofa police commemoration dayevent in New Delhi, Shinde said,"We have credible informationthat Pakistan is helping terroriststo enter our territory. We haveintelligence inputs. But we arealert. We have directed allconcerned to be extra vigilantduring the ongoing festiveseason to ensure peace andsafety of citizens. I also appealto the people to be on guard andbe extra careful."

The minister further saidterrorists backed by Pakistan hadbeen organizing attacks onmilitary convoys in Jammu andKashmir to spread fear.

Shinde's statement came aday after Pakistani troopsopened fire on Indian posts

across the Line of Control (LoC)in J&K's Poonch district, yetagain violating the ceasefireagreement with India.

The incident wherePakistani troops fired 600 roundsbetween 10.30 pm and 11.30 pmon Friday is being seen as anattempt to help militants infiltrateinto the Valley. "It is a classicway of diverting attention ofIndian troops guarding theborder. Militants take advantageof this to sneak into India," saidan official from the securityestablishment. For the past week,Pakistani troopers have beentargeting Indian positions onthe LoC as well as theinternational border. On October16, three civilians, including apregnant woman, were killed inPakistani firing in the Uri sectorof the Kashmir Valley.

According to sources,

Pakistan has violated theceasefire agreement with India onat least 275 occasions since 2006.While 2010 recorded 56 cases ofceasefire violations by Pakistan, the figure stood at 57 for 2011.In 2012, 47 such cases have beenrecorded, indicating that there isno let-up in efforts from acrossthe border to help infiltrationdespite civilian governments onboth sides working to normalizeties.

"India has been refrainingfrom making open accusationsagainst Pakistan and trying towork on things through bilateraltalks. However, despiteassurances from the civiliangovernment, elements in thePakistani establishment havecontinued anti-India activity.Perhaps, a mix of posturing andnegotiations is essential to pushPakistan to act," said an official

SRINAGAR: J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday maintained that thesituation in the state was conducive for partial revocation of the draconianArmed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) that gives security forces sweepingpowers to shoot to kill, detain people with warrants and immunity fromprosecution.

"I will continue to pursue the mission of withdrawal of the AFSPA even ifArmy has publically expressed its reservation for lifting the law. I will still stressfor the phased withdrawal of the law from some parts of the state," Omar toldreporters on the sidelines of a function.

He said the government should have made more progress for its withdrawalgiven the improved situation in the state over a period of time. ``Militancy inKashmir is at an all time low and there has been a reduction in the number ofcasualties as well,'' he said. "There are areas in the state where you do notrequire Army for operations and as such this is high time to revoke the law.''

The CM's statement comes days after Union home minister Sushil KumarShinde ruled out the AFSPA revocation and a terror strike on Srinagar outskirtsthat killed one civilian.

Congress will never use evidenceagainst kin of Vajpayee, Advani:Digvijaya SinghNEW DELHI: Keeping up his attack mode, Congress general sec-retary Digvijaya Singh on Monday let it be known that the UPAgovernment had "material" against the kin of former PM AtalBihari Vajpayee and his ex-deputy L K Advani. While confirmingthat the evidence against the relatives of Vajpayee and Advanihad the potential to embarrass the two leaders, he however saidthe government or the Congress would never go public with it.At the same time, Singh, in an interview to a news channel, denied that the graft allegations brought against Rober t Vadrahad hur t the Gandhis, saying DLF and Haryana government hadalready issued point-by-point rebuttals."What is the nexus between Vadra and Haryana government runby the Congress? Has Sonia Gandhi ever spoken about Vadra tothe chief minister or ministers... you cannot hang Sonia Gandhiwith your allegations for an act which she has not done," Singhsaid. The point in bringing up the "material" against Vajpayee andAdvani's kin was clear: Singh possibly wanted to convey to theBJP to tread with caution in amplifying the corruption allegationsbrought against Vadra by civil society activists. The BJP reacted by attacking Singh for deflecting attention fromwhat it described as the core issue of corruption. "He is himselffacing charges of irregularities in land allotment as shown by arecent MP high court order and yet he is talking like this,'' par tyspokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.

OBAMA TRUMPS ROMNEY IN3RD PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

BOTH AGREE DRONE ATTACKS ONPAK SHOULD CONTINUE

WASHINGTON: Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney was"all over the map" and White House incumbent Barack Obama was all overhim as the two contenders to lead the careworn superpower for the next fouryears struggled to provide a vision for the world in their third and final debatebefore the November 6 polls.President Obama was widely seen as handily winning the debate that fo-cused mostly on foreign policy, mainly on account of the incumbency advan-tage that gave him better insight into complex ground situations and allowedhim to express it with greater clarity in his summations. A CBS insta-pollfound that 53 percent of uncommitted voters thought Obama won the finaldebate, while 23 percent gave it to Romney. 24 percent were undecided. But Mitt Romney was no mug on foreign policy, and projected a degree ofauthority, although he failed to articulate a clear or different vision. He seemedto agree substantially with the Obama foreign policy, differing only in tone, emphasis, and nuance. The social critic and comic Bill Maher joked thatRomney's entire debate strategy was to say what Obama said, except itcame from a white guy. In fact, at one point, while talking on Iran, PresidentObama needled his rival, saying, "there have been times, Governor...whereit sounded like you thought that you'd do the same things we did but you'd saythem louder and somehow that would make a difference."It was one of several swipes an aggressive Obama took at Romney, whowas clearly disadvantaged by not being in executive command and havebragging rights over achievements such as nailing Osama bin Laden. Obama,in turn, managed to deflect criticism of things that haven't gone better byprojecting it as a work in progress. Although Romney disavowed theboilerplate muscular Republican foreign policy, at one point saying "we can-not kill ourselves out of this mess,"Obama called his rival's policy prescrip-tions "wrong and reckless." The area where Romney took the sharp-est hit was in defense, traditionally a strong Republican talking point. The Obama camp had evidently prepared well to counter Romney'sfamiliar critique about the U.S military being downsized and its Navyreduced to its smallest size since 1917.

PAKISTAN HAS FAILED IN PROTECTING THERIGHT OF EDUCATION FOR GIRLS: UNESCONEW DELHI/BUREAU NEWS: Even as the jointstatement from the team of doctors from the QueenElizabeth and Birmingham Children's hospitalsdescribed Pakistan's teenage rights activist MalalaYousufzai's condition as "comfortable and stable"on Friday, a recent United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco)report revealed some startling facts about how thecountry has failed in protecting the right ofeducation for girls and in reducing genderinequality. While Pakistan Government announced Sitara-e-Shujaat,one of country's highest civilian awards for bravery, to 14-year-oldMalala who was shot in the head by the Taliban for speaking out againstthe militants, the Unesco report stated that Pakistan, unlike others inthe region such as India, Nepal and Bangladesh, has failed to reducegender gaps over time. The report stated that there are over three milliongirls in Pakistan who are out of school. Indicating at the global outcryand support to Malala, Pauline Rose, director of the Global MonitoringReport (GMR) on Education for All (EFA) said: "It's tragic that it tookviolence for the world's attention to turn to the difficulties girls face ingetting to school in Pakistan. In the Swat district, where Malala is from, less than a third of girls are enrolled in school, leaving two thirds athome with little chance of fulfilling their dream. It is also a scandal toignore girls' education when we know it benefits not just that onegirl, but also has a huge impact on their household's health andincome, and ultimately the future peace and prosperity of theircountry." According to the Unesco's 10th Education for All Global

Monitoring Report released on Tuesday, Pakistan isdoing far worse in reducing gender gaps incomparison to other countries in the region. Thereport stated that 78% of the poorest girls were outof school in 1991 in Pakistan, a figure which hasonly reduced to just 62% today (around 2/3). India, meanwhile, which had similar rates of the poorestgirls out of school in 1992 (66%), has more thanhalved that to just 30% according to latest data.Likewise, Nepal has dropped the rates from 52% to

22% and Bangladesh from 44% to 9%. Rose said: "The news of theattack on Malala in Pakistan is a tragedy. She was standing up forthe right of education for girls in the country, rights which are notyet being respected. There are still over three million girls out ofschool in the country today."

"This is not the first time that insurgent groups have attackededucation infrastructure in Pakistan. Often, as seen in Afghanistan, girls' schools are a particular target. Failing to respond to such attacksas seen in Pakistan yesterday will only engender further fear amongparents over sending their children to school, of children going to schooland of teachers turning up to take classes," added Rose. According to theGMR statistics on Pakistan there are five million children out of school inPakistan today, three million of them are girls. And just 31% of girls areenrolled in primary school in Swat District exactly who Malala was fightingfor. According to EFA GMR analysis, 56% of poorest girls in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have never been to school. "All too often, due to conflict, theeducation of girls and boys is left off the list of priorities.

Kidnap or love story?Contd. from Page 1They said Nishan and his three accomplices forcibly took Shrutiaway and injured her parents besides firing into the air but Shrutidid not object to this. Sources said the police was in a fix becausethe accused in the case chose to go their separate ways afterabducting Shruti. The police had learnt from one of the accused who wasarrested immediately after the abduction that Nishan and Shruti hadboarded a bus to Moga. The trail, however, went cold after that. The policegot back on their trail after the couple sent letters through a courier com-pany in Paharganj. Police teams scoured CCTV footage from the Delhirailway station and learnt that the couple had boarded a train to Goa. Thecouple was sighted in Goa the day Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir SinghBadal held a press conference on the issue. But as the police did not knowwhere they were putting up, it took them two more days to locate them.Shruti has been sent to the Nari Niketan in Jalandhar where womenconstables have been posted to ensure she does not escape. Nishan willhave to face the music for forcibly entering the Sachdevas' residence, injuring the family and opening fire. He may get relief on the charge ofraping Shruti with police verification revealing that the couple hadsolemnised their marriage. The family has apparently misled peopleas well as media about the relationship between the couple. Theagitators were also not fully informed about the case.

However,in the '80s several films he directed and produced failed to leavea mark at the box office, notably "Mashaal" and "Vijay". ButChopra rose like phoenix with the commercially and criticallysuccessful film "Chandni" thus beginning his journey of makingromantic Hindi films. He then directed and produced the cultclassic 'Lamhe' in 1991. His association with Shah Rukh Khanbegan with the 1993 romantic psychological thriller film 'Darr',which turned out to be a superhit with SRK playing the role ofan obsessed lover. Since then, Chopra has directed three moreromantic films, all starring Khan - 'Dil To Pagal Hai' (1997), 'Veer-Zaara' (2004) and 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' (2012) before he announcedhis retirement from directing this year. Direction: Karan Johar

Genre: Drama

Duration: 2 hours 26 minutes

Story: The tracks are ready and the race is on. What's at stake?Love, friendship and the coveted 'Student of the Year' trophy.

Movie Review:It's KJo-Wala Love! Served fresh and piping hotfrom the Dharma college canteen of romance. And it's a high (class)school that you'd never want to miss a lecture of, ever. Except that ithas its own set of Karan rules. Read the prospectus: 1. Leave yourtext-books at home but ensure you're carrying your designer bagsand heels. 2. Drive a Ferrari to school, or if you're poorer, take a bike.3. Dating, mating, separating and love lessons shall be part of thesyllabus. 4. Girls, don your shortest minis, and guys, rip off theshirts. Welcome to St. Teresa's. Rest assured, it'll be a well-roundedentertainment experience.

ST is run by a happy and 'gay' Dean - Yogendra Vashisth (Rishi),who drools over John Abraham, and when he sees the much-marriedhot coach ( Ronit Roy) usko 'coach coach' hota hai!. The hotshotstudent of the school is rich brat Rohan Nanda (welcoming VarunDhawan), who zips around in his hot-wheels, flirts, and dreams ofbeing a Rockstar. His childhood sweetheart, another super rich kid,Shanaya (super filmy intro, Alia! Alia! Alia!), is Ms. Popularity andDrama Queen (don't miss the red pout) known for her brands andbeauty. Enter (grandly) Abhimanyu (Sidharth), a middle-class boywith mega dreams, a chalta-phirta KBC (Mr Know-it-all), and the in-house Milkha Singh.

There's a typical rich-poor division in school, the Richie RichTatas v/s the bechara gareeb Batas. But with Abhimanyu's entry thecompetition heats up - With both boys showing ample abs & attitude(teeny-weeny trunks, for all you drooling women!), chasing the samegal (Shanaya), and aiming for the same trophy - Student of the Year!Their equations from friends-to-foes changing quicker than theirschool grades. Their muscles rippling more than their egos; thecompetition gets tougher and the boys - leaner and meaner. Theirloyal friends adding chaos to campus - Eg. Tanya who trieseverything in the 'date- bait-book' to seduce Rohan (including push-up bras); the Parsi 'Pseudo' - the 'minority report'-card in this bunch;Jeetu - Rohan's chamcha; tomboy Shruti - Shanaya's other half (minusher designer do).

This is what we call grandiose debut(s)!!! Karan's definitelyswooshed his cane for this one. The trio has done him proud andhas set a high 'bench-mark'. Varun expresses and emotes with superbconfidence and storms the dance floor with swag. Sidharth standsequally tall, has amazing screen presence and is man of few wordsand many smouldering emotions. Alia wins your heart with hercuteness, effervescence and naivete. Yes, she reminds you ofKareena's Poo days (with all that oomph), but she comes into herown. The chemistry between the three (even outside the lab) growson you.

scores a straight A-Plus is undoubtedlyRishi Kapoor -simply superb. Theother guy who cantake a bow is thedirector.

The film is fullof KJo-isms - it's larger-than-life, colourful, lavish, beautifully shotand directed. With medleys, dance, drama and everything good-looking (from cast to couches, dorms to discos).

Vishal-Shekhar have caught the right beat with this high-schoolmusical, and the songs are as fresh as the leads. The story is simpleand entertains throughout, though it's not the first time this marathonof an idea has run past the screen. 'SOTY' takes you back to yourbooks and sinks you in true-blue Bollywood syllabus, following the'formula' - Two boys, one girl, one glorious trophy and lots oftestosterone. If this one doesn't pump you up with nostalgia, it'stime for you to go back to school already!

Tip Off: You may not like this movie if bubble-gum romances,picture-perfect worlds and candy-floss clouds are not your idea of amovie-going experience.

After his wonderfully skilled performance as a gay dean inKaran Johar's Student Of The Year Rishi Kapoor is all setto play Dawood. The super-versatile Rishi Kapoor

Genre: Action

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Story: Wilee ( Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is the best of New York'sdaredevil bicycle couriers. However, when he picks up an envelopefor delivery on a 'premium rush' priority, he finds himself racingagainst more than just the clock.

Movie Review: While the plot and premise of Premium Rush isfairly simple and generic - the all-important message that must reachits intended recipient, come what may - this, for the most part, isn'tjust a chase film. The dashing Wilee eschews a nine-to-five desk jobfor the sheer thrill of being a bicycle messenger with a death wish -dodging speeding vehicles, pedestrians and open doors along theway. As if to underscore his rebellious streak, Wilee rides fast, withno brakes on his sports bicycle. "Brakes are death," he nonchalantly

Premium RushPremium Rushtells his estrangedand concernedgirlfriend Vanessa (Dania Ramirez),who is also a bikecourier. She sees hiswild streak as ahindrance to themhaving a securefuture. After all, it would only take a split-second of misjudgmentfor him to meet with a fatal accident whilst riding. Small wonder then, that Gordon-Levitt needed 31 stitches in his right arm while filmingthe movie. Wilee's also got competition, in the form of the muscularand almost comical Manny (Wole Parks), who has his eye on Vanessa.

But this love triangle is put on the back-burner one day, whenNima ( Jamie Chung) hands Wilee a small white envelope that mustbe delivered downtown by 7.30 pm, the very same day. Enter themenacing bad cop Bobby Monday (very convincingly played byMichael Shannon), who has a nasty gambling habit coupled with asingle-minded,almost obsessive need to get his hands on thatenvelope. Various jump cuts in the movie and cool map-style visualshelp explain situations and embellish the story quite nicely. Theconversations between Wilee and Vanessa however, as they zip, dodge and weave their way through traffic come across asunnecessary and cheesy. There's the obligatory moral dilemmathrown in too. That aside, Premium Rush is fairly coherent, the bikestunts are cool and the film is filled with fast-paced chases that willoften have you at the edge of your seat.

The Indian Test team has been hurt by the misfiring openingduo of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, arguably, thecountry's greatest ever opening combo. Sample this:

Gambhir's last Test hundred came in January 2010 while VirenderSehwag is yet reach the three figure mark since demolishing NewZealand in November 2010. The concern is beginning to get bigger. For former captain Kapil Dev, it's high time that the duo performs.

"It's definitely worrying with two batsmen of that calibre notdelivering for such a long period. They have made huge reputationsand they have to go out there and defend it or else it will become a

It's time for Sehwag and Gambhir to perform, says Kapilworry for the team," Kapil said on Friday. Former India spinnerManinder Singh asked, "Hasn't Sehwag given enough hints overthe last year that he wants to bat in the middle-order? The teammanagement needs to talk to him and know why he is saying this.Keeping in mind the tour to South Africa next December, it will beworthwhile to have him down the order and have someone likeAjinkya Rahane opening the innings in India. Sehwag's reflexeshave clearly slowed down and we can't expect him to deliver inSouth Africa." Maninder added that Gambhir has put pressure onhimself by making tall claims.

"Gambhir has put too much pressure on himself. He has passedcomments during the off-season that he was ready for Test captaincy. And that adds to the pressure. He must go back to the people whohave groomed him in the past and sort out the problems." Gambhirhas, in the recent past, often got out playing his favourite dab shottowards the third man. His IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders' assistantcoach Vijay Dahiya, though, maintained that Gambhir was a masterof that stroke. "Gautam has scored a lot of runs with that shot andhe is really good at it. Now that he has started to lose his wicketplaying that stroke, it has glared up. His problem is more psychological. He played well in the IPL when he had an uncluttered mind," Dahiyahas said before leaving for the Champions League T20. With themiddle-order wearing an inexperienced look, the presence of bothGambhir and Sehwag in the line-up is crucial. Former India openerChetan Chauhan agrees. "You can't expose an inexperienced battingline-up at one go. It's unfortunate that both have been out of formtogether but they are class players," Chauhan said.

Former England captain and commentator Tony Greig hasrevealed that he is suffering from lung cancer. Greig wasinitially diagnosed with bronchitis in May this year and then

The left-arm spinner MichaelBeer was the best of the lot (pickingup the wickets of the dangerousPietersen and Taylor), while NathanRimmington and Joe Mennie alsopicked up two wickets each.Nathan Coulter-Nile chipped in withthe wicket of Naman Ojha, whileBrad Hogg mixed his variations welland troubled the Daredevilsbatsmen consistently in his fourover spell. Earlier in the afternoon, though Herschelle Gibbs’ six offIrfan Pathan was the first scoringstroke of the innings, the Scorchersbatsmen generally struggled tocome to terms with the sluggishnature of the pitch. Gibbs tried tocreate some momentum, but he

only managed to drag the ball backonto his stumps.

Shaun Marsh and SimonKatich continued to accumulateruns over the next few overs, butclearly even they felt the pressureof not scoring runs quickly enough.Marsh in particular was jittery andattempted to break the shackles onseveral occasions without toomuch luck. The pair batted togetherfor 67 deliveries, but could onlyaccumulate 73 runs in that period. The platform had been set and justwhen it was time to build on it, thePerth Scorchers would lose bothbatsmen; Marsh (39 off 41 balls)was the first to go when he miscueda pull and holed out to the man atmidwicket. Katich (34 off 33 balls)followed soon after when he droveAgarkar through cover, but MahelaJayawardene was alert to theopportunity and completed asharp catch.
