THE Brihanmumbai MunicipalCorporation (BMC), which startedeviction of slumdwellers living

along the Tansa main pipeline around twomonths ago, is still grappling with opposi-tion from locals.

The civic administration had begun theproject of removing slumdwellers alongthe pipeline in a bid to secure the watermains from pilferage and contamination.Under the project, slumdwellers livingwithin 10 metres on either side of thepipeline in nine wards were to be evicted.

Additional Municipal CommissionerRajeev Jalota said, “Several PILs regard-ing the issue have been filed by differentgroups. Unless they are resolved, the evic-tion process in certain slum pockets willbe delayed.” The BMC has so far evictedmore than 238 slumdwellers in Mahim’sDharavi area of which 114 slumdwellersare eligible for alternative accomodation.

Meanwhile, the civic administration isgearingupto launchtheevictionprocess inother places. In the first phase, it will evictslumdwellers living along the pipeline intwo wards — G north and S ward — whichcover Dadar, Mahim, Prabhadevi,Vikhroli and Bhandup. In the secondphase, the administration plans to carryout the drive in seven other wards, includ-ing Ghatkopar, Mulund, Chembur, And-heri (East), Matunga, Dadar (East), Ban-dra (East), Santacruz (East) and Kurla.

The Bombay High Court on Mondayrefused to stay the proposed demolitiondrive in slums along the water pipelinesin Bhandup, Ghatkopar and Powai.

According to the initial survey con-ducted by the BMC, as many as 15,789huts were raised illegaly along the watermain. Of these, people living in 7,800huts are eligible for alternative accom-modation as these structures were raisedbefore the 1995 cut-off date.

The BMC had launched the projectfollowing a PIL filed by Janhit Manch,claiming 20 per cent of the city’s watersupply was lost owing to theft, wastage orleakages. Later, the court had orderedthe civic body to constitute a committeecomprising Chief Secretary, DirectorGeneral of Police, Municipal Commis-sioner and others to look into the issue.
