Mungret Club Notes 14 Oct 2014
U16 Football County Shield Final
This match was played in Rathkeale last Saturday, resulting in another close game between two
evenly matched sides. As usual we started slowly and not for the first time had to rely on Michael
Uwatse to keep us in the game early on. But once we settled and took the lead mid way through the
first half we never looked back and were 4 up at half time. With 12 minutes left we were 8 ahead,
then cue the NCW comeback two goals and a couple of points and it was all to play for again. With
Enis Haxji and Jake Hackett off injured we looked in trouble. But dig deep the lads did and a wonder
point from county minor Adam Storan followed up by a late point from Peter Harrington saw us
home to claim our first piece of silverware having lost finals in each of the last three years. Scorers A
Storan 0 6 D Curran 1 3 D Taylor 1 0 C Moran 0 1 P Harrington 0 1 S Scanlon 0 1.

In Hospital on Sunday was the setting for this dramatic match. This team were well prepared. They
were up against Galbally. Mungret put the first score on the board . The backs were put under
pressure and Galbally put some numbers on the scoreboard. This team worked well together. They
had to battle hard but Galbally got though some gaps. It was not until the last few minutes that
Galbally got the score difference built up, our defences were low and they took advantage. Well
done to this team and management on getting to the final a disappointing loss for them. Put this
match behind you and look to next year. The team on the night. Stephen Barry, Gearoid Hanrahan,

U11s Ladies Football
On Sunday our U11s travelled to Mick Neville Park in Rathkeale to compete in the County Blitz. The
girls played St.Bridgets in the first game a put up a great battle but unfortunately missed out by a
score line of Mungret 0-0 St.Bridgets 0-3. The second game saw the girls take on Monagea in what
was a great game with plenty displays of skill. Mungret recorded a great win on a score line of
Mungret 0-3 Monagea 0-1. This saw the girls qualify for the semi final a they were drawn against
Drom/Broadford. While the girl’s level of football grew better with every game Drom had the edge
running out winners 0-1 to 0-4. Special thanks to Eamonn and Catherine who took charge of the girls
on the day.

Minor Ladies Football
Also on Sunday the minor footballers began their championship campaign with a home venue
against new entrants to the competition Adare. The first half saw Mungret take a hold of the game
with points from Kate Mulqueen 0-4, Ciara Mullane 0-3 and Julia Walsh 0-1. Adare scored two late
goals before the interval with saw the sides level Mungret 0-8 Adare 2-2. The second half saw a
different Mungret with some words of advice from Matt at the break spurred the girls on to take
control of the game. Goals from Mairead Clancy 1-0, Niamh O’Keeffe 2-0, Rachel Fennell 2-0, Grace
Maloney 2-3. Points from Aine Ryan and Michelle Joy kept Mungret beyond the reach of Adare. The
scores on the other side of the pitch were kept to a minimum by some great defending from Karen
Mason, Clare O’Meara, Amy Dineen and Jenny O’Malley. Mungret eventually ran out comfortable
winners on a score line 8-14 to Adare’s 4-2.
U12 Hurling
This team continued their preparations for next Sunday's Liam O'Donoghue tournament with a
challenge match against Monaleen on their new pitch. Although we ran out 3-11 to 1-1 winners, the
game was more competitive than the scoreline suggests. We had some strong performances, and it
was great to see Ben O'Curry get in amongst the goals. Team: Conor Murtagh, Conor O'Halloran,
Ewan O'Dea, David Hassett, Ciaran Kenny, Odhran Dwyer, Eamon Flahive, Daragh O'Hagan, Conor

U6 Football Blitz
Well done to our U6 players who turned up on Saturday to play in a blitz against Claughaun and
Ballybrown. Thank you to the coaches for helping out on the morning. It is great to see this great
group of children enjoying themselves.

U10 and U8 Ladies footballers in Passagewest
Our U10s travelled down to Passagewest a few weeks ago for one of the biggest blitz events of the
year. The scale of the event can be gauged from the list of teams posted up below. Our girls put up
some fine performances, and we would like to thank all the parents and coaches who gave up their
day to support this great event.

Continuing our series profiling the contestants, here is the final group of dancers for Thursday night.
Couple Five
Aaron Hickey & Jenni O'Malley
Sponsored By: Fusion Restaurant
The youngest dancer of the group Aaron has a simple philosophy to Jig’s & Reel’s Dance First, Think
later it’s his natural order. The John Mullane of Mungret hurling has a clear insight into the task
6
ahead “Were fools whether we dance or not so we might as well dance” The second dancer hailing
from St Clements College Aaron is always up for the craic & wont be let wanting in the
entertainment stakes. Proving that you’re never too young to have loads of embarrassing memories
and dancing to express not impress this mammy’s boy has the full support of his family, friends &
teammates.
Ladies footballer Jenny has an on the pitch persona as hard bit of stuff well able for the rough &
tumble. These traits certainly have stood her in good stead during Jig’s & Reels practice especially
handy in keeping her partner in check. This UL student described by her friends as a happy go lucky
girl always smiling and giggling has the ability to keep calm & point her toes to success. Moving like
Jaguar and proving that guilty feet have no rhythm Jenny has the full backing of her family and the
ladies football fraternity. Aaron we hear from a reliable source it’s always a good idea to be on team
Jenny, as she has no difficulty clearing out the opposition.
Jenni and Aaron Maurice and Nina
Couple Six
Maurice Walsh & Nina Phillips
Sponsored By: Better Body Bootcamp
Great dancers are not great because of their technique they are great because of their passion. This
describes Club secretary Maurice Walsh to a tee full of passion with no technique. There is no doubt
that Maurice has his own unique style, which can be described as a hybrid of various bad habits
picked up over years of attending GAA weddings & functions. Maurice has been selected not
because he showcases amazing footwork but because we know he does not! Dance partner Nina has
had to keep him on a short leash with constant reminders (Threats) to arrive on time. Almost
certainly the funniest man to ever don-dancing shoes for the club Maurice’s home team of Betty,
Jack & Julia will be rooting for him on the night.
Proving that the Welsh just don’t sing they can dance Nina Phillips has stormed into the competition
thanks to boyfriend Niall Barron’s knees. Prior to entering the competition Nina believed that
everything in the universe had rhythm then she was partnered with Maurice Walsh. Nina has
7
showed her prowess through out practice and can do every move that Maurice does only backwards
and in high heels. With sound advise from her homeland Nina Keep Calm and have a CWTCH.
Couple Seven
Harry Barry & Orla Ahearne
Sponsored By: St Nessans Parents Council
According to Harry Hurricane Barry dancers don’t fall over they make level changes. This hurricane
certainly does not float like a butterfly or sting like a bee on the dance floor that would need flashes
of grace & power characteristics we have yet to witness. However we have seen that Harry can be
light on his feet circling around his opponent AKA his dance partner Orla giving us the confidence he
will strike the right balance of POW and WOW on the night. Kickin ass Irish style Harry has the full
encouragement of Louise, Kate, Tony & Steven his home team.
You think I’m crazy you should meet my sister that’s how Orla Ahearne got plunged into Jig’s &
Reel’s. Proving that you should never underestimate a girl in puddle socks and hard shoes Orla’s
attitude to the competition is to “Keep Calm nobody else knows what they are doing either” This
busy mum of four leaves one mad house for another every Tuesday and Thursday proving when the
going gets tough she gets tougher. As the excitement builds Team Orla namely Sean, Muiris, Liam,
Padraig & Gearoid are her biggest fans.
Harry and Orla Ken and Geraldine
Couple Eight
Ken O Connor & Geraldine Hall
Sponsored By: Great National South Court Hotel
A jewel in the crown of the model county Ken O Connor has the motto believe you can & you’re
halfway there. Proving friendship and rivalry wave the same flag Ken’s ambition to be crowned Jig’s
& Reel’s champion is been nourished across the border in the parish of Ballybrown. Confirming the
old adage nice men marry dancers – real me become dancers Ken has stormed into the competition
keeping his best moves under lock and key until the dance off! Ken’s girls namely Geraldine,
8
Doireann & Faye are super excited to see his moves on the night.
Returning to the parish of her birth Geraldine (Harry) Hall has shown us all that this competition is all
about picking yourself up, dusting yourself off and getting back in the game, not letting the odd
injury get the better of you. Geraldine’s dancing skills have been sharpened by an intense rivalry
built up over the years of incarceration in the neighboring parish have no doubt that this lady means
business. Demonstrating that dancing is the vertical expression of the horizontal desire her family
and friends will be wowed on the night by her magnificent moves.
Couple Nine
John Mc Keogh & Martina O Halloran
Sponsored By: Redhouse Landscaping
To John Mc Keogh farming is just a job, dancing is a way of life. From watching him with UDDERS in
the competition is hard to believe that this expert was once a beginner. This REEL athlete of Irish
dance believes that nothing easy is worth doing. They say that behind every great man is a woman
rolling her eyes and Helen is nearly blind after this experience. Proudly supported by his number one
fan son Keith John is living proof that weird is just a side effect of been AWESOME!
Demonstrating if you give a a girl the right shoes she can conquer Jigs & Reels Clare lass Martina O
Halloran has what some deem the most difficult task in the competition keeping John Mc Keogh in
check. It’s a good job that Martina’s attitude to the experience so far has been Keep Calm & Feis on.
Martina’s philosophy is simple take more chances dance more dances. With stellar support from
Brian, Conor & Amy team Martina is ready for a performance to remember.
John and Martina Noel and Noreen
Couple Ten
Noel Scully & Noreen Moriarty
Sponsored By: Mungret Council
9
Noel’s motto is you don’t stop dancing because your too old, you grow old because you stop dancing.
This community stalwart reckons life begins at the end of your comfort zone and has certainly shown
to date that he is a man willing to take chances. With the attitude never take life seriously nobody
gets out alive anyway Noel is so excited he just cant hide it. Cheered on by wife Dolores and the rest
of the Scully clan this man promises to be to good to be ignored.
Old enough to know better, young enough to do it any way describes Noreen Moriarty to a tee.
Dancing like a fine wine, Noreen matures with every performance, just as well as Noel is a far less
mature vintage. Noreen’s philosophy to life has held her in good stead “what would life be without a
good tango” This club legend is usually found behind the bar serving the masses but for one night
only she will don her dancing shoes in a serious attempt to entertain. With massive support from
John and the lads at home Noreen can’t wait to hit the dance floor!

U13 Football
The U13s had a great start to their football match at home against Newcastle West racking up 2
goals very quickly but Newcastle west did not take long to settle down and take control. Final score
3-2 to 5-9 to Newcastle West. Next match is on Monday in Ballybrown.
