Leroux St. (and alley) 020 Spirit Line | Jetsonorama 2016 | Coconino Center for the Arts, 2300 N. Fort Valley Rd. Among Dine’ weavers there is the concept of the spirit line – an inten- tional “defect” left within an otherwise perfect weaving that serves the dual purpose of allowing the weaver’s spirit and creativity to escape to create more rugs. The spirit line also reminds us of the tenuous balance between beauty and imperfection and how one is contained in the other. 018 Jetsonian Optimism | David C. Mullins 2015 | Travelodge Motel Flagstaff, 1560 E. Route 66 The inspiration for this mural is the flying fins and gleaming grills of the “style over substance” cars of the 1940s and 50s that traveled Route 66 in its heyday. The artist paid close attention to the lines, contours and shapes of cars from that era to form the mural’s shapes and angles into a retro- futuristic abstraction. The bright colors and imaginative shapes recall the optimism of the mid-19th century and continue the retro-futuristic theme. 027 Furniture Barn Cow | Melanie Thomson-Myers 2000/2015 | Natural Grocers, 503 W. Clay Ave. The 35-foot high Holstein cow on the front of the Natural Grocers building is the first commissioned mural by Melanie Thomson-Myers. Originally painted in 2000 to advertise the previous owner’s furniture business, the mural included a 35-foot high cow and meadow scene wrapping around the building’s east and south sides. When Natural Grocers purchased the building the meadow was painted over. A portion of the meadow scene was recreated by the Mural Mice (R.E. Wall and Margaret Dewar) as part of a conservation effort to preserve the cow in 2015. 007 Mother Myth Mural | Mural Mice Universal (R.E. Wall, Margaret Dewar) 2014 | Phoenix Ave. and San Francisco St. The Mother Myth mural illustrates the history of Route 66 in Flagstaff through the decades of the 1920’s-1980s. The story begins on the right with the construction of the road and continues left through the era of the Great Depression, WWII and the post-war heyday of America’s Highway. The mural ends on the far left with the decommissioning of the highway. Where the “Road Ends,” the romantic legend begins, keeping Route 66 alive into the 21st century. Mural Mice Universal are local artists R.E. Wall and Margaret Dewar. 061 Por el Amor al Juego (For the Love of Play) Sonja London-Hall | 2019 | 211 E. The 10-foot sculpture, a synthesis of modern aesthetics and Hopi imagery, pays homage to the artist’s great-great-grandmother, Nampeyo, the Hopi/Tewa potter famous for her revival and creative use of ancient firing and painting techniques. Drawing inspiration from her pottery designs, Namingha interprets traditional iconography and form through the contemporary medium of painted steel. The yellow of the sculpture is the Hopi directional color for North, chosen to signify its home at the Museum of Northern Arizona.

PUBLIC ARTViewing Public Art

Art that is placed in a publicly-owned site is almost always public art. Because it is funded and owned by the public, it is accessible to all and viewable with no admission fee, and usually will never be moved or destroyed. In contrast, privately-owned exterior art may be viewable by the public but access to, visibility of, and permanence of the art are at the discretion of the property owner. Some public art installations are the result of partnerships between the City and private business owners. Public art in these locations have license agreements that specify the terms of access, visibility and preservation. Note that these installations may be viewable only during business hours.

Public art in Flagstaff is indicated by the BBB tag.

Funding for Flagstaff’s Public Art

Flagstaff’s beautification and public art projects are funded by Bed, Board and Beverage (BBB) tax revenues that are allocated for beautification

and public art. Flagstaff’s seven-member Beautification and Public Art Commission is tasked with the study and recommendation of beautification and public art projects based on their lasting benefit to the community, increasing livability, and enhancing the overall quality of life in Flagstaff.

See, Explore and Experience

The Public Art Map was created as a resource for residents and visitors to explore and experience the growing and widely varied selection of public artwork in Flagstaff. Each piece tells its own story, some inspiring, some meditative, many with whimsical surprises, while others are expressly intended to leave a legacy for future generations. Many of the pieces have been inspired by the natural surroundings and local culture of Flagstaff and northern Arizona and reflect the rich heritage of the area.

What is Public Art?

Like the art in your home and in museums, public art is appreciated for its beauty, emotional power, educational aspects and sometimes, controversy. Unlike the art in homes and museums, public art also gives cities and neighborhoods distinct character and a sense of place. It engenders place making and communication, promotes neighborhood identity, and creates urban exclamation points for visitors and residents alike.
