And welcome to everyone new to our school and our community. Wow! What a great start to the year we’ve had. It may have been a short week but we’ve packed plenty into it. See our photo pages to catch up with what we’ve all been doing. We have a number of new students, which is great. It’s always fun for our existing students to meet new ones and learn about where they’re from and what they like. The same goes for our staff. With four new teachers in school there has been plenty of ‘meeting and greeting’ happening. To further that, and ensure that everyone in school knows who they all are and where they fit into our school, we’re holding a Powhiri (welcome) next Tuesday at 9 a.m. We’d love to have you join us for that in the school gym. Come along and be introduced to all of our teachers, hear our students perform and be part of the “Murchison family/whanau”. Members of the wider community are welcome too so don’t forget to bring others along with you. Next Wednesday night we are also going to hold a BBQ for you all. We would love you to join us for that too so you can take the chance to mix and mingle with our staff. Following the BBQ, John Parsons, Internet Safety Expert, will be running a session for parents. If you are interested in attending that (and it is seriously worthwhile – I honestly believe that every parent/caregiver/ grandparent should hear him speak at least once) then we will mind your children so that you don’t have to rush home. There have been whisperings of a Minion movie, though I may have heard wrong . . . . . The swimming pool has seen a lot of use over summer, and I am sure that it will continue to do so through February and March. I would just like to remind those who have hired keys that you are bound by the rules that came with your key. You must not allow children under 18 to go to the pool unsupervised – and that supervision must be by a parent or caregiver NOT just an older student. Please remember that if these rules are breached we have the right to require you to relinquish your key. Our other news is that we have been accepted as a Kids Can school. This means that we are eligible for some assistance for families who may be struggling. We are very grateful to Kids Can and all of the businesses that sponsor them, for the way that this will support some of our students. If you believe we can be of support to a family, whether with lunch top-ups, shoes, raincoats or medical products, please get in touch with me for discreet assistance. Kia Kaha. SWIMMING With the hotter weather, the Primary classes are swimming most days. Please remember to send your child/ren’s togs each day to school. Secondary students should be aware when they have PE and will be swimming. A gentle reminder in the morning, asking if they have swimming would be appreciated.

It’s that time of year again…. With the warmer weather here, we are implementing our NO HAT, NO PLAY rule. This is for ALL STUDENTS. Secondary students must also now follow this rule. There are 3 different styles of school sunhat available from The Warehouse in Richmond:-

∗ A cap with our logo; ∗ A bucket hat with our logo, and

∗ A plain navy wide brim hat.

Also a reminder to all secondary students. You must wear uniform hats from now on

e.g. winter beanies and summer sun hats. There will be no exceptions.

Welcome the new people to our areaWelcome the new people to our areaWelcome the new people to our areaWelcome the new people to our area

We are keen for you all to meet our new teachers and to have a quick refresher on who

our remaining teachers are.

With this in mind we are taking the opportunity to hold two separate events.

On Tuesday 9th Feb at 9 a.m. you are invited to a Powhiri (a welcome assembly) at

school in the gym. Come along, hear our students perform and welcome our staff and

new students to 2016.

On Wednesday 10th Feb, 5.30 to 7.00 p.m, the Board of Trustees would like to in-

vite you to a BBQ dinner at school. We will hold it on the grassed area behind Rooms

3/4 and the Library. The only thing you need to bring along is a picnic blanket, a ther-

mos if you want a hot drink, and yourselves. We’ll be providing sausages, burgers and

water. Everyone who would like to join us is welcome.

To get an idea of how many to cater for we will need an idea of numbers so please call

the school office to advise of numbers by this Friday (5th) or complete the form that

your child will bring home.

After the BBQ, Internet Safety Expert, John Parsons, will be running a session for

adults (having run them for our students during the day). So that you are free to stay

for that (and I really believe it is worth your while to stay) we are offering childcare

during his session (7 to 8.30 p.m.). There have been whisperings of a Minion movie,

though it is possible that I heard wrong.

Mobile Community Oral Health Clinic is visiting again! The Mobile Community Oral Health Clinic will soon be in our area once again. As in the past it will be sited at Murchison Hospital from Monday 22nd February – Friday 4th March 2016. The brightly decorated Mobile COHC houses two fully equipped clinics each staffed by a dental therapist and a den-tal assistant who are supported by modern x-ray, computer and sterilsation facilities on board. The Community Oral Health Service operates from 8 am to 5 pm five days per week, and fifty weeks per year giving parents more choice as to when they can accompany their children. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board Oral Health Educator Esme Palliser said “Parents have also enjoyed the ability to group book all their children to be seen at the same visit, and talking directly to the dental therapist about good oral health care for their family”. The Mobile clinic makes two visits a year to our area and parents will be contacted by telephone to arrange appoint-ments for their children. If families need to change these appointments or they have recently shifted or changed their phone number they should phone 0800 833 849 or 03 520 9922. The Mobile clinic will also be visiting from the 29th August—2nd September 2016.

2015 Field Day and Step Up Concert We still have some DVD’s available for sale from the 2015 Field Day and Step UP Concert. If you would like to purchase either one or both of these CD’s, please see Kathryn at the Of-fice. They cost $3.00 each.

A wee reminder….. ∗ If your children are late to school; or ∗ you have to collect your children during school hours; or ∗ you are returning children to school during school hours; ∗ or you are a visitor to school; THEN you must call into the office first and sign in or out. In the event of an emergency, we need to know where our students are at all times during school hours. Likewise we need to know who is visiting our school.
