Earlier this month we sent a group of Year 5 to 8 students to Buller Athletics Sports and their results were impressive. From those students ten were selected to compete at the West Coast Athletic Sports in Greymouth. Seven of those students travelled to Greymouth on Tuesday this week and competed on Wednesday. The plac- ing's they gained are further in this newsletter and, although unconfirmed at this stage, make for very pleasing reading. Congratulations to all of our students who competed, we are proud of your effort and the way you repre- sented our school. As usual with our students on trips away, I have received compliments on their behaviour. It is wonderful to know that we can send students away to represent our school and can always rely on them to set a great example in their manners and sportsmanship. Also setting a great example at the moment are our senior students who are studying hard for their exams. Exams began on Monday morning and continue through until the 4 th December, although there are no exams scheduled for today as it is Canterbury Show Day. At the moment there is a lot of talk nationally about the review of the Education Act. The current Act became law in 1989 and a lot has changed in the past 34 years so it is time to bring the act up to date and ensure that it reflects current New Zealand. The Minister says that, “One of the biggest changes suggested is to make it clear in our law that children and young people, and raising their achievement, comes first. The law should help schools, by setting out a clear direction, saying who is responsible for what, and saying how schools should plan their priorities and report their progress. The law should also make it easier for schools to work together more to deliver the best education for every child and young person and to try out great ideas.” The Minister wants to hear your views and is therefore holding public consultation meetings. The first consultation meeting in Nelson was earlier this week; however they will be advertising further meetings. You can read about the consultation at https://consultation.education.govt.nz/ and can email any submissions you may have to [email protected]. Your engagement in this process will be to your children’ advantage so I encourage you to participate if you are interested. In the meantime, have a great weekend and if you’re travelling anywhere take care on the roads as it is a long weekend for Cantrabrians so the roads are likely to be busy. It’s that time of year again…. With the warmer weather here, we are implementing our NO HAT, NO PLAY rule. This is for ALL STUDENTS. Secondary students must also now follow this rule. There are 3 different styles of school sunhat available from The Warehouse in Richmond:-

∗ A cap with our logo; ∗ A bucket hat with our logo, and

∗ A wide brim hat.

Also a reminder to all secondary students. You must wear uniform hats from now on e.g. winter beanies and summer sun hats. There will be no exceptions.

The Swimming Pool is open, and is now heated!

That’s right, Hammer has been very busy getting the pool up and running,

and with an average temperature of 26 degrees, the water is very inviting.

Keys may be purchased from the school office for $75.00. This price includes a key bond of $15.00 which will be refunded when the key is returned at the end of the 2015/2016 swimming season.

SO GET THOSE TOGS OUT…..AND GET READY TO DO SOME

SERIOUS SWIMMING AND HAVE SOME FUN!

Many thanks to everyone who has supported getting the pool heated!

Did you know? Irene Van Dyk has sent us all a ‘Switch your sugary drinks to water’ challenge for Novem-ber. Fizzy drinks, sports drinks and juices all contain acid and sugar that destroy teeth. Tooth decay occurs when sugar feeds the bacteria in our mouth and produces acid. Sipping for a long time causes more damage due to prolonged contact time with our teeth. “Thirsty kids need water not sugar” says former Silver Fern Irene van Dyk. “To replenish your body, you need water!” So….join Irene and ‘Switch to Water’ this summer. It’s free. It’s fresh. It’s available on tap!
