SYNOPSIS (THIS OUTLINES THE FLOW OF THE PARTY EVENTS). It was time again for the Annual Walgrave Astoria Costume Ball and the town’s 'who’s who' arrived on the scene in their most fabulous costumes. The guests kicked off the evening with yummy appetizers

and mingled about with ice-breaking trivia while catching up on recent events in town. Some of the guests didn’t fair too well in the same room but the hotel staff got the party going with a side-splitting game of 'So you think you can dance' followed by the 'Creepy Disguise Contest.' While dining on a delectable dinner, the guests engaged in a fun 'Marvelous Movie Challenge' followed by a hilarious

game of 'Actors, Writers, and Directors.' Then, to everyone’s horror...a murder occurred! The guests rallied together and performed an intense investigation to figure out whodunit and quick - before the

murderer escaped - pausing only to break the tension of the investigation with the 'What Costume am I Challenge' followed by the 'Mummy Relay Extravaganza.' Then, the guests settled down with a delicious dessert and took turns accusing who they believed the murderer was. Everyone was

shocked when the murderer finally confessed! After a brief escape attempt by the guilty party, the guests got the costume ball back on track with an amusing game of charades and an ultra-

entertaining rap contest. Overall, it was the costume ball of the century!

    *IMPORANT INFORMATION REGARDING CHARACTER ASSIGNMENTS:

Assign your most definite RSVPs and outgoing guests to the required characters and the more tentative, shy/reserved guests for the optional characters. It’s suggested to invite more than the required number of players as guests can cancel at the last minute and leave you high & dry. You can play as many optional players as you wish and in this kit, they have the same materials and same participation level, but are not ‘mandatory’ for the storyline to play out and the mystery to be sleuthed. So, what happens if one of your required characters cancels on you at the last minute? First,

take a deep breath…it’s not the end of the world.

WALGRAVE ASTORIA’S HOST DIRECTIVES Get ready for a fun time at the Walgrave Astoria with your purchase of the ‘Murder at the Walgrave Astoria’s Annual Costume Ball’ game from mymysteryparty.com! This party is an entertaining and comical mystery where the players act the roles of hilarious personalities while sleuthing the intriguing story line. You can never go wrong with a costume ball party for you and your closest friends & family! This mystery is for ages 14+— age minimum is for difficulty and the ability to relate to the characters. The mystery is not too difficult, but it is challenging enough to keep your guests intrigued while sleuthing the fun story line. PREPARING THE KIT: This document needs to be printed in advance of the party. Cut out the clues, slip them into envelopes labeled with the appropriate round and character for each round of the party. It is optimal to choose different colored envelopes for each round and you can purchase the exact amount needed for your game on the http://www.mymysteryparty.com site in the Mystery Prop Emporium section. For economy’s sake, an alternative is to scroll the clues and fasten with a ribbon. Be sure to label the outside of each scroll with the character/round. In these instructions, however, we will assume you are using the envelope method for each character, each round. Our ‘How to Host’ video demonstrates how to prepare these in both of these methods on the My Mystery Party channel on YouTube, or you can access this video on our website in the ‘How to Host and FAQ’ section & on the front home page of our site. THE HOST SHOULD PLAY: During the party, your job as the host player is to make sure the rounds flow properly. As the host, you may choose to play any character you wish – and we encourage our hosts to play the game! If you want to avoid being the murderer or victim – simply choose an optional character to play. OPTIONAL PLAYERS: No worries! These characters may be optional to the mystery, but they will never know they were optional! They have the same materials as the required players, but are not the murderer or victim, so your story line will remain intact if they are not played in your game. As long as you have the required players assigned and ready to play, you have nothing to worry about!

The game is organized into four rounds and is structured as follows: OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS & STARTERS: these optional pre-game starters and task sheets are to be delivered to each guest before the party or give them to the guests as they arrive. All pre-game materials are optional and do not alter the mystery and are intended to enhance the pre-game build up for the event. These starters and tasks are not vital to solving the mystery and omission of them does not alter the mystery in any way. APPETIZER (COCKTAILS 4 ADULTS) HOUR / ROUND ONE: Deliver these clues as your guests arrive. DINNER HOUR / ROUND TWO: Deliver these clues while you serve dinner (optional) to your guests. DESSERT, AND THE BIG REVEAL/ SOLUTION ROUND THREE: Deliver these clues with coffee/hot cocoa and dessert. OPTIONAL PRE-GAME STARTER INVITING YOUR GUESTS: Before the party, encourage your guests to view the Your Mystery Party -http://yourmysteryparty.com/walgrave website or use the free printable My Mystery Party invitations as they have the character descriptions included and a link (web address) to the Your Mystery Party website. This way, before the party, they can get familiar with the other characters that will be at the party as well as the history of the Abby Manor and more! There are also hidden/subtle hints about characters throughout the page so those guests who choose to be ‘super sleuths’ can spend some time studying the Your Mystery Party site prior to the party. THE FREE INVITATIONS: Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link that says ‘free, downloadable invitation’ to download the pdf file. If you are playing with an expansion pack to this game, you’ll need to go to the expansion pack page to get your invitation that includes the expansion pack players – the link is in the expansion pack file if you cannot locate it on the site. Simply go back to where you purchased the expansion pack and scroll to the bottom of

the page to an icon that looks like this: Click on this icon to download the expansion pack that includes your additional players. Fill in your information in the text fields and either print or save to your hard drive. Do not attempt to edit the text fields and save the invitation from the html version of the invitation. Save it to your hard drive first, and open it with the newest version of Adobe Reader to avoid any problems. You can email these invites as an attachment to your guests to save paper costs. You will need to enter your information in the text field and save one on your hard drive for each player, changing the character to be played on each invitation. Alternatively, either email this link or use any eVite site and simply include the link to the Your Mystery Party guest invite site at http://www.yourmysteryparty.com/walgrave OPTIONAL PRE-GAME: this optional pre-game round is to be implemented approximately one week before the party. Please note that this round is designed to generate pre-game excitement and is not necessary to solve the mystery. The ways to deliver these starters are as follows: Print these starters (pre-game task sheets) and send them to your guests via snail mail - USPS. Hand them to your guests at any time before the party if you are to see them. Alternatively, make some

delivery rounds in your car. Wear your costume and stay in character during the delivery - why not?

You can hand these to your guests as they arrive before you give out the round one envelopes. (This option is not optimal since it is pre-game task suggestions that are written such that they are done prior to the guests’ arrival at the party. However, if you explain that they were intended to be received a week ago – they can still view them, nonetheless).

You can also print the free, downloadable tickets to the ball on cardstock for a fun ‘authentic’ effect. The downloadable ticket is found on the game page and on the Your Mystery Party page, as well.

ROUND ONE - IT’S PARTY TIME! DÉCOR: Create a Costume Ball ambiance with a Phantom of the Opera soundtrack (or any other type of music) CD playing softly, and elegant ballroom décor (elegant backdrop, balloons in a sculpture, candelabras, etc.) You can also make DVD of pictures of you and your guest to play like a slideshow during your party on the television (if there is one in the room). Great colors for a costume ball are majestic purple and gold, or maybe a royal red theme – but there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to color palettes – you can choose anything! All senses come into play with your guests during the party – sight, touch, smell, taste, and sound – so you want to aim to captivate all senses so your guests have a memorable time. Remember that food should be part of the décor, so make it appetizing! Check out our Pinterest page for this game that has great DIY ideas for hosting this party: https://www.pinterest.com/mymysteryparty/murder-at-the-walgrave-astoria-costume-ball-murder/ GUEST ARRIVAL: Round one – appetizer hour begins as the guests arrive. Cocktails (for adults) and appetizers can be served and a round one envelope should be handed to each guest. Make sure the guests’ instructions and the character descriptions are available for the guests to review. You can also creatively display the clue-containing envelopes on a table for the guests to locate their own character names. Don’t forget to take both individual pictures of your guests… but also a group picture one everyone arrives - they’ll all want copies of these! BONUS ACTIVITIES: at any time during your party, you can insert a bonus activity (see bonus activity instructions for more details). You can play before, during or after any round. The key is to tell the guests to remain in their character at all times. Breaking character will disrupt the momentum of the mystery game’s story line, so it is very important. Bonus activities provide a temporary distraction and keep the energy level high and excitement flowing. Even if you think your guests aren’t the party game type, you should at least try to play one – you’ll be surprised how much they get into it and have a blast.

ROUND TWO – DAUNTING DINNER HOUR PRE-GAME SET UP: In the nearest bathroom, place the following items under the sink - the victim sign, scotch tape (host supplied), host supplied white non-toxic face makeup (optional but funny and suggested), the (cut out) murder weapon (butter knife) , and if you have purchased the victim t-shirt and / or crime scene tape. If there is not a cabinet under the sink, place these items in any location that can be concealed within that bathroom. The murder victim will be instructed in their clue card for round two to look for it if there is not a cabinet under the sink. The murder victim will be instructed in their round two clue card to put the white face makeup on their face, put on the victim sign by adhering it to their chest with Scotch tape, to adhere the murder weapon to their forehead with scotch tape, and if the optional victim t-shirt is available—to put that on (with the victim sign on top) and if the crime scene tape is there - to decorate themselves with it. It is hilarious when a fully decorated victim walks back into the party room! PRE-ROUND TWO: Pair your guests into teams of 3-4. Facilitate the ‘Marvelous Movie Challenge’ game while you serve dinner (dinner is optional). After about 15 minutes, take up the movie challenge guess sheets from your guests and score them using the Fantastic Movie Challenge answer key. If, for any reason, you do not want to play the movie challenge, you will have to cue the victim when to become the victim. You will need to look on the required players’ round two clue cards to determine who the victim is, so you will know in advance of the party. PRE-MURDER ROUND TWO - pass out the round two clue cards and encourage the guests over the next 30 minutes to mingle while implementing their 'pre-murder' reveal clues for round two. Do not forget to implement your own 'pre-murder' clues and mingle with your guests before you advance the round. It will not matter that they have the post murder information on their clue cards – this is by design. Some guests will wait to read them when it is time and others (super sleuths) will read ahead to be prepared. There are no big spoilers on the post-murder clues – the guests need the whole picture of the murder and everybody else’s clues to be able to sleuth the crime. For example, if you waited to give the post-murder clues separately from the pre-murder clues – you will have a ‘stop down’ while everybody reads the clues. Let’s avoid that. Therefore, that is why we put them on the same card during round two. We’ve tested this over a decade – it works best this way!

ROUND THREE – THE BIG REVEAL

ACCUSATIONS: After you collect the mystery investigation sheets, allow the guests one-by-one to accuse who they believe the murderer is and how they did it. instruct them to tell the group their guess of the murderer‘s motive. If you add an awards ceremony using the awards certificates available on the My Mystery Party site in the mystery props section, you can use this round as the final decision maker on the Best Actor/Actress award. FINAL SOLUTIONS: Once everyone has made their accusation, pass out the round three envelopes to your guests and have them sit in a circle or semi-circle in order to see each guest read/act out their solution cards one at a time to the group. Instruct the guests to stand up in front of the group and read (act out) their final solution round card one at a time in the exact order that is directed by the solution round cards. At this time, serve coffee and dessert!

HELPFUL HINTS ON HOW TO PLAY A MYSTERY PARTY GUEST INSTRUCTIONS

You’ve been assigned a character and you’ve come to the party dressed in the most awesome costume and have been told to play your role. Now what? The mystery is separated into three main rounds of party play. During the party, you will receive an envelope that contains the clues necessary for your character for the round. The clues for the characters at the party provide everything that you need to solve the mystery. However, during the investigation segment of the game, you will need to ask the right questions and pay close attention to everyone’s clues to get the whole picture of what has happened.

FULL INSTRUCTIONS IN THE PURCHASED GAME

From this point forward, you are to remain in character until the mystery is solved. If you are playing an ‘alien from Mars,’ then that is who you are until the end! Undoubtedly, your host cast you into a character that you are comfortable playing. Some characters are designed to be played more reserved than other characters. Feel free to play your role in any manner that you feel comfortable. Embellish your character’s personality if you would like. However, if you are feeling more reserved tonight, you can opt to allow the other guests to approach you or you can simply listen in on others’ conversations to get your information.

OPTIONAL PRE-GAME STARTER CARDS Cut the task strips out below and slip them into envelopes. Below on the pre-game task sheets, fill in your guests’ preferred contact information (i.e. email, phone) so they will be able to contact each other. IMPORTANT: If any of the optional players are not being played in your game, write ‘DISREGARD THIS TASK’ in the contact information space.

CHARACTER 0 OPTIONAL - for some pre-party fun, contact (email, phone, etc.) the following guests in the week leading up to the party: Contact the guest playing Fiona Fingstein and tell her that you know why she canceled her last appointment with you - because people have bashed you in the media lately for your old-fashioned 1950s hairstyles. She’s been a client for 10 years now and you expected more loyalty out of her! (Contact info :________________________________________________________________) Contact the guest playing Yune A. Vorsti and say that you can’t give him/her free haircuts any longer. Business is not good right now. (Contact info :__________________________________________________________________________________) Contact the guest playing Red Axehouse and say that you can’t give the Firehouse a discount for haircuts any more. Business is not good right now. (Contact info :_______________________________________________________) Please note: either contacting the guests above or deciding to skip these tasks will not alter the mystery or anyone's ability to solve the mystery in anyway. However, contacting other guests will lead to excitement about the party and will encourage other guests to read about the other characters and be prepared for serious fun!!

ROUND ONE CLUES – CUT OUT, SLIP INTO ENVELOPES AND LABEL.

CHARACTER J– ROUND ONE CLUES TO REVEAL DURING THIS ROUND

During this round, mingle with other guests to discuss the following information with whomever you choose: • Tell Royal ‘T’ that you know that The Sushi Roller - the wresting character s/he does during her matches sometimes -

is a complete parody of you! Say that it is fine and all, but you’d like some credit for it! You think it’s actually hysterical when s/he slaps his/her opponents with a slimy trout.

    • Tell Royal ‘T’ that the WFW Producers told you that it was Royal ‘T’ that fought to get your seafood contract terminated because s/he doesn’t like seafood. Say that you have held the only contract for the WFW for many years and it is tradition that the wrestlers and staff eat fresh lobster, crab and scallops before every fight. You make most of your income from this contract and you are pretty devastated and don’t know how you’ll support yourself now!

    • Ask Zangelina why she puts up with Royal ‘T’s wresting character parody of her - The Adopter. Say that it is not funny at all how this character throws baby dolls at his/her opponents.

    • Ask Dr. Indy Jonas how it is working with someone like Nicole Wilton’s father. Say that you heard he is related to the mob or something like that.

    • Tell Fiona Fingstein that you realize that you provide the seafood to the food court at her company, Widgets, Inc. and you might be slightly higher than the national average as far as your prices go. Argue that the freshness and quality should count for something. Tell her to please not put the contract out for bids for other fisherman because they will give a lower price but they’ll send frozen, tasteless seafood and the employees won’t be happy.

PERSONAL CLUES TO CONCEAL • You want to get revenge on Royal ‘T’ for being the only one that hates seafood at the WFW (World Federation of

Wrestling) and fighting to get your contract terminated so s/he can get Idaho Steaks.

ROUND 2 CLUES – CUT OUT & STUFF INTO LABELED ENVELOPES WITH THE APPROPRIATE CHARACTER AND ROUND.

    CHARACTER B - Round Two Pre-Murder Clues

    • Tell Toyoka to explain everything she knows about the Senator to you immediately. Say that you know she knows what you are talking about and if she knows what is good for her, she will comply. (When she tells you everything, tell her she needs to meet you on Pier 13 later this evening after the costume ball to discuss further details.)

    • Get as much information about everything that you can from all of the guests at the party. You are still in ‘phase one’ - collecting information about absolutely everything and everyone.

    • Tell Fiona Fingstein that you are on to the scam that she is trying to pull. Say that you are aware that she is using her friends at the IRS to cause misery upon her enemies and this will only place a huge target on her back that awaits an arrow called revenge.

Evidence: • It takes 15 seconds to take a brisk walk to the center of the room from the light switch on both the western and the

eastern wall. The light switch was off for 30 seconds. • You were not standing far from the western light switch before they were turned off. You could have turned them off.

When the lights came back on, you were standing right next to Fiona Fingstein. You didn’t trust her and wanted to remain close.

    • The one with the biggest motive is the murderer. You know this is always the case.
