Thanks from Metal Fabrication to all who supported our "Koats for Kids" fundraiser this year. With the help of Building Construction for the display boards, along with Graphic Arts for the brochure and the countless student hours, we raised $3500.00.

Also, a special thanks the Women's Wellness group for their generous donation of $350.00 as well!

Youth in Philanthropy in action…..

Special thanks to members of our Hockey Team who helped to deliver the Christmas hampers. They delivered the 4 school hampers plus a hamper put together by the parents/coaches of the hockey team featured below. The boys were excellent ambassadors of our school and were excited to help out. The receiving families were extremely grateful as well! Thanks to Ms. Street and YiP for allowing the team to help out.

Ethics Bowl

We would like to congratulate our 5 students who participated in the 4th Annual Manitoba High School Ethics Bowl—Karina Buckingham, Alex Bacon, Grace Minsky, Carter Heintz, and Raven Morrisseau. They competed against 11 other teams at the University of Manitoba on December 15, 2017 and made Murdoch Proud!!

Individualized Program—Room 106 A special shout out to the students of our Individualized Program raising $106.00 through a bake sale selling cupcakes they made to staff and students. Money raised was contributed to the Go Fund Me Account for Hunter Boittiaux.

In February 2018, Julianna Campos, our grade 9 student, competed in Ottawa, Ontario at the Taekwondo National Championships. Julianna went undefeated and ultimately was successful in becoming the 2018 Canadian National Champion for Junior Females (under 59kg).

Julianna has been named to Team Canada and will be competing in Tunisia in the World Taekwondo Championships in April. Julianna is the only Transcona resident and the only female Manitoban to make the Junior Canadian Team. She has won three national titles, is the 2017 Pan-American Champion and has won numerous international medals (US Open, President's Cup).

We are very proud of Julianna and her accomplishments and wish her well in her upcoming competitions!

Congratulations to Samantha Robert, Grade 10 who played goalie on the Kildonan East Reivers girls hockey team, who won the City Championship.

He fabricated an amazing one-of-a-kind steel map of the City of Winnipeg and presented it to our Mayor—Mr. Brian Bowman.

Also, over the Spring break, Philipp was the $1500.00 recipient of the CWA Phil MacGregor award - top welding project in the province which was held at Red River Community College.

A few students had the privilege of

attending the State of the City Address

and listening to Mayor Bowman speak. It

was an excellent opportunity for our

students to meet and network with

community business leaders.

By all accounts, the Tri-School Career Fair was a success with 52

Exhibitors and over 350 students, parents and community members

in attendance! We would like to thank our Murdoch staff and

students once again for all the help and support that made this event

such a huge success!

Clansmen Sports

All We Do is Win, Win, Win…

Hip Hop artist, DJ Khaled made famous the expression “All I do is win...” with his 2010 song by the same name. It seems as though the 2018 edition of the Clansmen Indoor Track & Field team was listening.

In the JV Girls category, grade 10 multi-sport athlete Reese Lange, continued her winning ways from last year’s track meet and captured gold in the 60m and 200m sprints.

In the Varsity Boys category, long time Clansmen track standout and defending MHSAA Provincial Outdoor Pentathlon Champion, Preston Kull, also continued with his winning ways and captured two silver and one bronze medal over the course of his day. His silver medals came in the 60m and high jump events, while his bronze was for his efforts in the shot put.

For the first time in a decade, the Clansmen track team had enough athletes in a singular age category to participate in a 4 person relay. Our JV Boys relay team, comprising all grade 9 aged athletes, Jayden Bryant, Jett Belyk, Bahati Kivi, and Kaydon Laurin, captured a silver medal with an outstanding performance in the 4x100m relay. It should be noted that most teams competing are predominantly made up of grade 10 athletes in the JV category, making their result that much more impressive. Further to that, grade 9 track phenom, Jayden Bryant took home gold medals in both the 200m and 800m races while setting a new KPAC record in the 800m with a time of 2:09.89. Teammates, Jett Belyk and Bahati Kivi, captured individual medals as well. Jett won bronze in the long jump, while Bahati won silver in the high jump.

Although track & field isn’t nearly as popular at Murdoch MacKay as it is at some of our competitor schools, year after year the Clansmen track team keeps stacking up the medals. Which leaves one to wonder; If this is what happens when 8 student athletes participate in track what would happen if more students got into track?

The short answer perhaps; wait and see.

After all, outdoor track & field is just a couple of months away.

After our championship in the 16/17 season and losing plenty of veteran players, our team was destined for a bit of a rebuild. However, this Clansmen team didn’t have a rebuild in the agenda and was hungry to defend our Price Division title. Right out of the starting gate, this team was ready to compete and had continued success throughout the season and playoffs.

We finished the season with a record of 21-3 (undefeated 12-0 at home). We continued this strong play into and throughout playoffs as we swept the quarters, semis and championship series to win our second Price Division championship in a row! 12 straight playoff wins over the past two years for the Clansmen is an amazing feat…

The team was led this year by a strong, veteran defensive core and a relentless group of hardworking forwards mixed with solid goaltending. Not only did they play at a high level, they conducted themselves as true gentlemen on and off the ice and represented our school excellently.

Brandon Jazz Festival - Road Trip!

This year has been very exciting for our Jazz Band. From the beginning of the year we have been sounding great, and early on we hit our stride in rehearsal in order to prepare for all of our performances carefully and with attention to detail. We recently attended the Optimist Jazz Festival and earned a positive adjudication from our clinicians, but there were moments that we wanted to improve in our performance.

We were definitely satisfied by our experience in Brandon. These fine musicians left it all on the stage, giving a bold and exciting performance which wowed the adjudicators and earned us 5-star ratings.

It was a real pleasure to work with these students who were so independent and responsible during their travel with us. As a teacher it is a blessing to know that you can rely on your students to represent your school in a positive manner, and this has proved the rule with our Jazz Band, year after year.

Fun was had, memories were made, and a certain rubber chicken made an appearance in the Festival concert as a special nod to our students in particular.

Thanks for the memories, and keep it funky, Jazz Band.

The Great Debaters… Coming Soon to an English Classroom near you!

The Grade 9 English classes are hard at work practicing their persuasive language skills to get ready for a

grade level debate tournament. The students started by learning about persuasive techniques and how to

use them effectively. A few classes held a competition to see who could

create the best print advertisement using the art of persuasion. This was a

fun hands on project that allowed students to explore their creativity while

practicing their skills. Students are now working on transferring those skills to

refine their ideas in debate format. Classes will spend time learning about

the rules and etiquette of debating, how to use their persuasive writing skills

to persuade an audience, and practicing their public speaking skills. Each

individual classroom will be holding a competition through which the class

will choose their top debate team. Each classroom will then send their

nominated top team to compete against the other Grade 9 classes in the grade level tournament which will

be held April 23-27.

Also, an English-Social Studies initiative brought in author

David Alexander Robertson of the novel Strangers to our

Murdoch MacKay Collegiate’s Library for a book talk. Held

in conjunction with Indigenous Month, it was fantastic

listening to Mr. Robertson present how his writing process

works and from where he derives inspiration. Our

students were engaged, asking thoughtful and considered

questions, and Mr. Robertson was delighted with our

students’ careful analysis of his work.

First Nations, Metis & Inuit Studies History students had the

opportunity to hear from Residential School survivor Tony

Stevenson in March. Mr. Stevenson’s story is a very real and

raw experience, and ultimately an uplifting one of

transcending abuse and pain.

Our students were grateful to Mr. Stevenson in sharing his

story and helping them further on the path to understanding

and reconciliation.

Pi Day!

March 14th is Pi Day, a day where math is celebrated across the globe, and Murdoch’s

Grade 9 Math classrooms joined in on the fun! Pi (more commonly seen as 3.14 or ∏)

is the internationally recognized symbol used to represent the ratio between a circle’s

circumference and diameter, and is used throughout students high school math

careers. Because the first three digits of this number are 3.14, Pi Day is celebrated on

March 14th!

Many different activities happened during Pi Day at Murdoch this year, including

graphing Pi to over 600 digits, learning fun facts about Pi, and eating some pie too!
