NEXT ROUND OF ROAD SAFETY GRANTS OPENCommunity groups, schools and local councils will have a second chance to tackle Queensland’s road toll with the

next round of the Community Road Safety Grants program now open.Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson called on locals to put forward their innovative road safety ideas

for a share of the $1.2 million in funding.“We promised to revitalise front line services, but making our roads safer is a whole-of-community effort and it’s great

that local Queensland groups have the chance to come forward with ideas to reduce the road toll,” Mr Emerson said.“Each group can apply for up to $25,000 in funding over the coming five weeks for local safety initiatives.“We’re again inviting non-profit, school and local government groups to Join the Drive to Save Lives by delivering

local road safety projects.“Local ideas, adapted to local conditions, are critical to improving road safety and these grants let government,

business and the community work together to target local road safety.”The first round of the grants program last year received 76 applications – 41 were successful in sharing $815,000 of grant funding.

Among the initiatives to receive grants in round one included:Queensland PCYC to help disadvantaged youth obtain their drivers licence

through a volunteer driver mentor program Toowoomba Liquor Industry Action Group to trial a Maxi-taxi hire program Trivia road signs on the New England and Cunningham highways.Mr Emerson said the program was one of 60 action items in the Newman

Government’s $350 million, two-year Road Safety Action Plan, launched in mid-2013.

“While we have seen a decrease in the road toll, there are still too many lives lost on our roads each year,” he said.

“All projects must be clearly focused on road safety initiatives, particularly focussing on driver distractions and road crash injury rehabilitation programs.”

Applications for funding close Monday, 10 March and more information is available at www.tmr.qld.gov.au/roadsafetygrants

ANZAC COMMUNITY GRANTS PROGRAM Communities across Queensland can apply for funding from today for

local events, projects and re-enactments to commemorate the centenary of Australia’s involvement in the First World War.

The grants will provide an opportunity for communities to commemorate the role played by individual citizens or their community as a whole in Austral-ia’s First World War effort.

The $13.5 million Anzac Community Grants program was part of $49.3 million the Queensland Government was devoting to Anzac centenary com-memoration events and projects.

The grants will provide funding of up to $80,000 for local projects to com-memorate the centenary of World War 1.

The centenary is an important opportunity to remember those courageous men and women who have fought and served in all wars, conflicts and peace operations and especially remember the sacrifice of those who have given their lives in service.

The grants will help communities stage events and commemorations with particular local relevance such as exhibitions, community education activities and the restoration or enhancement of memorials and honour boards.

The Anzac Centenary was an opportunity to honour all of those who rep-resented our country in battle and on the home front many years ago.

Many of the state’s communities have their own Great War stories to tell and I’m sure other Queenslanders will want to hear those stories.

We are looking forward to hearing Queenslanders’ ideas about how they would like to honour the Anzac spirit in their local community.

It is important that we remember all that has happened in our past and that we also provide a legacy for the future.

Applications for this first round of grants will close 14 March 2014.There will be further funding rounds through the duration of the centenary

period.http://premiersqld.smartygrants.com.au/anzaccentenarygrantsprogramroun-done Jeff Seeney MP, Member for Callide, PO Box 559 , BILOELA QLD 4715 T: 1800 812 119 / 4992 2475, F: 4992 3189, E: [email protected] W: www.jeffseeney.com.au

JARED’S JOURNEY TO AUSTRALIAN CRICKET SELECTIONIt all started at the Queensland 14&U State Cricket Championships held in early December

2013 in Cairns. Jared was selected into the Queensland 15&U cricket team as a spinner and quality tail end bat.

Training with the Queensland team began at Country Week in Brisbane where the boys played 4 matches against adult teams. A 3 day training camp at Ipswich Grammar School followed on from this, with more match practice taking place. One last practice match against the Sunshine Coast Taveners team at Maroochydore finalised their pre-Nationals training.

The boys flew to Canberra on Saturday the 22nd of February and began play on the Sunday.

Match 1 was against Victoria. Queensland (8/172) finished on a high after defeating Victoria (10/82) by 90 runs. This is the first time that Queensland have ever beaten Victoria at this Carnival. Jared was not needed as a batsman and faced only 2 balls, however assisted his team mate to make his first National 50. Jared did some damage with the ball, taking 4/24 off

his allocated 10 overs. Add in a direct hit run out, and all in all it was a terrific day.Unfortunately the elation from the first day was cut short after being plunged

into disarray by Western Australia in Match 2. Western Australia won the toss and batted, posting a massive total of 6/254. Jared bowled 7 overs posting figures of 0/36. Queensland took to the field and were quickly left reeling at 7/27 off 12 overs, before a tail end fight back that included 27 fast runs by Jared limped Queensland to a total of 10/114, a loss of 140 runs.

Match 3 was against ACT. Queensland won the toss and batted, posting 10/128 off 48 overs. Jared managed to be left not out on 12. In reply, ACT passed our score in the 46th over with 4 wickets in hand. They finished their 50 overs at 9/151. Jared’s figures for today were 2/19 off 10 overs with 4 maidens.

On Wednesday the 26th the boys had a rest day and Educational Excursion to the Australian Institute of Sport. All enjoyed this trip.

Match 4 was an easy 7 wicket win for Queensland against Tasmania who were bowled out for 120. Queensland made 3/122 in reply. Jared took 1/28 off 7 overs with 1 maiden and was not required to bat.

Match 5 was against Northern Territory and saw Queensland again notch up an easy win. Jared was destructive with the ball, taking 4/15 off 10 overs including 4 maidens. Queensland passed NT’s score quickly and finished 0/80 with a 10 wicket win. The team made their way back to the final to watch NSW defeat WA in a nail-biter.

The closing ceremony and Australian Team selection followed where Jared was surprised and honoured to be selected into the 15&U Australian Cricket Team. They will tour Sri Lanka in early May.

The itinerary includes pre-tour training at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane for 2 days, with a few days acclimatisation near Galle and some community involvement. Sunday the 11th of May will be their first match – a 50 over game. Another 50 over game will be played in Colombo before travelling to Kandy where they will play 2 T20’s on the first day, then another 50 over match on the 2nd day. There will be an excursion on Saturday the 17th to Nuwara Eliya followed by a travel day to Colombo with a visit to an Elephant Orphanage enroute. A two-day game will round out the cricket, followed by some R&R and shopping prior to departure late on Wednesday the 21st of May.

As you can imagine, this tour will be rather costly however the opportunity for a small country town boy to experience life as part of an Australian team is a wonderful opportunity. We are seeking sponsorship for Jared. If you are interested in assisting him achieve the first part of his dream, please contact Leanne on 0438 684 705, or via the below facebook page.

For those who frequent Facebook, we have started a page called Jared Sippel (Athlete). This page will keep anyone interested up to date on his progress and whereabouts during the tour. We would be very pleased if you would visit the page and support Jared’s sponsors.

We are grateful for support from the South Burnett Regional Council via their Community Assistance Grant, as well as sponsorship from the South Burnett Cricket Association and Murgon & District Cricket Club. We have also received fantastic support from family, friends and our local community. From us to you – thank you. Editors comment: Congratulations Jared.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY 17th March IRISH DIESEL FITTER*

Paddy and Mick were both laid off, so they went to the unemployment office. When asked his occupation, Paddy answered,

‘Knicker Stitcher . . . I sew da elastic onto ladies knickers and thongs . . .’ The clerk looked up Knicker Stitcher on his computer and, finding it classified as unskilled labour, he gave him £80 a week unemployment pay.

Mick was next in and when asked his occupation replied, ‘Diesel Fitter.’ Since a diesel fitter was a skilled job, the clerk gave Mick £160 a week.

When Paddy found out he was furious . . he stormed back into the office to find out why his friend and co-worker was collecting double his pay.

The clerk explained, ‘Knicker Stitchers were unskilled labour and Diesel Fitters are skilled labour.’ ‘What skill?’ yelled Paddy. ‘I sew der elastic on da knickers and thongs, then Mick puts ‘em over his head and says: ‘Yep, deesel fitter`!!

SCHOOL DATES AND HOLIDAYS FOR 2014

A student-free day would fall in Term 4 on Monday 20th October, with three discretionary student-free days – which may be changed by individual schools – pencilled in for the start of the Easter break on 7-9 April.

Last year the Newman Government legislated the Labour Day public holiday would be marked on the first Monday in October, this year it falls on the 6th, with the Queen’s Birthday to be celebrated on 9th June in line with most other states and territories.

Dates for student attendance at Queensland state schools are:• Term 1 - Tuesday 28 January to Friday 4 April • Term 2 - Tuesday 22 April to Friday 27 June • Term 3 - Monday 14 July to Friday 19 September • Term 4 - Tuesday 7 October to Friday 12 December. The class of 2014 will end for Year 12 students on Friday 21 November.Years 10 and 11 finish their school year on Friday 28 November, with most other state schools breaking up on 12

December. Some regional and remote school finish on 5 December.Independent schools and Catholic schools base their holidays on the state school dates but they can vary from

school to school.I suggest the families of students who attend non-state

schools, to please check with your particular school for attendance dates.

The Newman Government is working hard to revitalise front line education services so that Queensland continues to be a great state with great opportunities.

I wish all staff and students across Queensland a very successful and safe school year in 2014.

The 2014 state school calendar outlining term, holiday and staff development dates can be downloaded from http://education.qld.gov.au/public_media/calendar/holidays.html.

SEAFOOD BUFFET

March 8th & April 12th

Dear Parents and Carers,

Student Leadership Investiture, School Badge Ceremony, Monday 10th March at 9am

Come along and meet our Student Leadership Team for 2014— School Captains, Sports Captains and Student Council

A big thank you to the Volunteers who come to the school giving their time to assist us in delivering the best education possible for our students. We have some wonderful regulars, and the Teachers really look forward

to, and plan for, their presence in the classes. We are always on the lookout for additional volunteer time. If you, or someone you know, is interested in volunteering at the school, you and they would be very welcome—parents, grandparents, friends, or just plain interested. Contact Anne Hess, Head of Student Services, at the school.

You may have heard about the government’s initiative called Great Schools Guarantee.

With the additional funding through this initiative our school is focusing on our curriculum priority—Reading. We want to ensure that every child achieves the best that they can with their reading results. We also want to impress upon everyone that EVERY DAY COUNTS.

Children NEED to come to school everyday. Even missing one day of school can put the child behind. The Great Schools Guarantee is concentrating on the early years ie Prep to Year 3, however our curriculum focus is Prep to Year 7. There are several programs which we are continuing, plus new programs which we are currently implementing which will complement our focus. Come along to the P&C meetings each month for regular updates on our progress.

The Darling Downs South West Education Region has once again offered the Project 600 initiative to schools to be involved in. As well as Year 5 students as in 2013, this program is also being

offered to Year 3 students. Our school has employed additional teacher time for the next 10 weeks to run the Project 600 program. The program involves students working online with a Teacher, and gives all students, in Years 3 and 5, 18 additional hours of literacy. We are very excited about being involved in this program and the huge potential benefits for our students.

Yours sincerely, Pamela J O’Loughlin Principal, Murgon State School.

Birthday Celebrations were in full swing for the Kingaroy and Murgon Quota International clubs combined Birthday Party at Dimities Cottage, Wondai on Monday night 24th February. Quota was founded 95 years ago as the first ever women’s service organisation by Wanda Frey Joiner who was elected as the first president with its headquarters in Buffalo, New York.

Quota International is now a worldwide network of service and friendship changing lives of deaf, hard-of hearing and disadvantaged women and children in 259 communities in 12 countries around the world.

Guest Speaker for the night was John Tully, an Angel Flight pilot from Kingaroy. The volunteer pilots donate their time, their skills and most of their aircraft cost for each flight. John gave an extensive insight into the wonderful organisation which was founded in Australia by Bill Bristow in April 2003. Service to rural and remote communities is high on the agenda for Angel Flight who co-ordinate non-emergency flights for financially and medically needy people all over the country. All flights are free and assist patients travelling to or from medical facilities anywhere in Australia. They have conducted over 14,500 missions helping over 2.400 patients, carers and family members.

Kingaroy Quota President, Marie Shaw thanked John for sharing his information on a caring and compassionate volunteer organisation.

A Kingaroy Quota member, Jean Black was born the same day Quota was founded so Jean was also celebrating 95 years. Congratulations Jean.

Have You Got Worms or Something? by Dee the Naturopath

The average human is home to an amazing number of parasites. They mostly thrive in the intestines because obtaining nutrition is easy for them and most spend their entire life there however there are some parasites that make their way to other parts of the body like the liver and other organs. If you have pets or work with animals you will be affected.

Threadworms for example are highly contagious and having them is rarely a reflection on cleanliness. School children are particularly prone because they often share things like food, pencils and toys. Those with household pets are prime candidates as well because all it takes is for a pet to lick its fur then lick you. A child putting their fingers in their mouth after touching a pet is enough for a worm infection cycle to begin again, usually spreading

like wildfire from that point throughout the rest of the family. Also it’s important to know that even though over the

counter treatments like Combantrin and Vermox effectively kill adult worms, they do not kill off any eggs that are present. This is hardly ever brought to anyone’s attention and because of this many people find themselves reinfested with worms within 20-25 days. In a period of just three weeks eggs reach the small intestine where they hatch, larvae swim to large intestines and grow into worms where adult female worms lay eggs and the cycle starts again. Symptoms include the ever-so-common itchy bottom, restless sleep, lack of appetite and irritability.

Although threadworms are the most common worms that infect humans in Australia, there are dozens more types of parasites that can invade a human digestive tract that are not affected by standard treatments. This is an area where herbal medicine shines as individualised tailored effective parasite control involves ongoing herbal anti-parasitic treatment as well as thorough liver and gall bladder cleansing and detoxification. Ridding yourself or your children of parasites is so much more than taking a little pill or chocolate square every 3 months. If you are interested in undergoing a comprehensive anti-parasitic and liver cleanse contact me today for an appointment.

Doctor Livia de SEIXAS from the Murgon Medical Centre, whose judgment that started a recovery (straight to hospital) from a life threatening experience.

The patient was air lifted to a major hospital within hours and was placed in the Clive Berghoffer Intensive Care Unit for over a week and received 6 operations at St Vincent’s Hospital Toowoomba removing bad matter and

then a final operation for a skin graft.Total time spent in hospital was just over 3 week’s, The patient is now

recuperating at her family home. The patient and family are indebted to and sincerely wish to thank all the

medical staff involved including St Vincent’s hospital and their specialist doctors, The Aerial Medical service and the specialists involved, the Murgon Medical Centre, Murgon Hospital staff and the doctors who really saved her life and her arm was the immediate good care of Dr Sam Stevens at the Murgon Hospital and Dr Akua Agyeman that quickly acted to avoid the sudden deterioration in such an

unusual situation. We also wish to thank the community for their support and well wishes and advise everyone to seek immediate medical support for bites from especially Cats, Dogs, Birds and Humans.

This story is also one of the many reasons that financial support for our Emergency Helicopter Service is of major importance. Clubs, Organizations and private donations can be forwarded to Raelene Dennis of Dennis Electrical Service, Gore St. Murgon.

EARLYACT MEMBERS BECOME ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS!Members of the Murgon State School Earlyact Club were privileged to be part of a program being run through

Barambah Environmental Education Centre (BEEC) aimed at developing leadership skills in children using the environment as a central theme.

Sue Gibson (BEEC Principal) spoke of several well-known global environmental leaders, including David Attenborough, Steve Irwin, Al Gore, ‘The Lorax’ and Skye Bortoli (an amazing young indigenous woman). This introduction set the scene for prospective leaders to embrace the knowledge that environmental sustainability can be achieved using their leadership skills.

The Earlyact Members worked up a sweat pulling lantana, planting and watering trees, as well as acquiring the following leadership knowledge. Good leaders:

Have a clear goal or purpose, Communicate clearly, Make decisions and problem solve, Delegate roles and jobs to other people, Look after their team.

After an amazing day the students returned to school ready to implement their new found leadership skills.

Photo: Madison, Lateesha and Ella planting native trees in a freshly cleared area and Steve discussing with students how leadership skills can be applied in any situation.

Photography – Share Your VisionMisinformation , by Sherrianne Talon of Talon Digital Imaging, www.talondigitalimaging.com

I read photography articles daily. I try and keep up with techniques, new gear, and different ways to do things. I am always trying to learn a little more. In this quest for more knowledge, I have discovered a disturbing trend. This trend is for amateur photographers to write blogs and articles on photography, give really bad advice and get published as professionals.

I have come across two articles this week that prompted me to stop reading a certain blog simply because of the misinformation published in it. When I checked into the authors, one had no website, no photo credits to his name and in fact, couldn’t even be found on google and the other did have a website full of some of the most pathetic photography I have ever seen. Yet both these authors were noted as being professional photographers.

I don’t want my students or anyone interested in photography to be reading such misinformation and uneducated opinions.

If you are interested in learning more about photography, my advice is to find a few authors and photographers whose work you admire and who are actually successful photographers and learn from them. Research them, look at their work, and then see what they have to say. Making sure their work is quality is the most important step. If they don’t take quality pictures themselves, then they have no business telling other people how to do it.

A good author will give examples, tell you how to do it, give you variants on the how to and explain why. They will know their stuff when it comes to gear. They will have a good portfolio and they answer comments and questions.

Basically, don’t believe everything you read on photography. Once you find people who’s opinions you can trust because it’s backed up by their work and follow their advice, you will notice your photography begin to improve and you will find your own groove.

I’ve listed a couple of resources here:-http://www.expertphotography.com/top-20-most-influential-photographer-bloggers/http://www.themoderntog.com/best-photography-blogs-2013

HEALTH SINKS ITS TEETH INTO DENTAL WAIT LISTS

Queensland’s dental waiting list has been cut in half and the long wait list slashed from 62,513 to 8,494 between February and December 2013.

Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said Queensland Health has issued 80,000 vouchers to give patients access to dental care they so desperately needed.

“In February last year, 56 per cent of people on waiting lists had waited more than two years for their general care. By December 2013, the percentage was down to 14 per cent of the entire waiting list,” Mr Springborg said.

“By making some simple changes, improving engagement with the private sector and through the hard work of Queensland Health’s oral health staff, we have been able to achieve some great results.

“As an example, 11,213 patients in Metro South had been waiting for more than two years for dental care in February last year, by December we had reduced that number to zero.

‘‘The improvement in wait times has seen Queensland Health exceed the Commonwealth performance target, resulting in a $30 million payment.’’

Mr Springborg said the funds would reimburse the Department of Health for the money it provided to hospital and health services to address dental waiting lists.

‘‘This additional funding allowed hospital and health services to increase their use of the existing dental voucher scheme,’’ he said.

“Vouchers were sent at the discretion of the hospital and health service, primarily to people who had been on public dental waiting lists for long periods, or to those requiring urgent dental care.’

‘‘From July to December 2013, about 20 per cent of all public dental service activity was delivered privately, with the remainder provided by our public oral health staff.

All Men are invited to an inaugural meetingto start a ‘MENS SHED’ at Murgon. OK, so what is the difference between the ‘Shed Men’ nights which we go to every 3

months, and a ‘Men’s Shed’ ?Well a Men’s Shed is held weekly or even twice per week, is at the same shed every

meeting, and is where men get together to share skills like woodwork, metalwork, or whatever, have a coffee and maybe tell a story or two. (Sort of like fishermen do!)

Several blokes want to start one in Murgon – what a great idea! Let’s get behind them. The first meeting to set up a steering committee etc will be held at 11 Rewald St in Murgon - from Wondai, turn

left in Murgon at Murgon Auto, left at the T junction, then first right. Time – 7.30pm. Date – Sat March 29th.Mark Wall, co-ordinator of the Nambour Men’s Shed, will address the meeting. Mark

has a wealth of experience and can answer your questions.Paul Pfeffer from Murgon will then address the meeting. Paul has had a passion for some time to get a Men’s

Shed started. Paul has some great ideas.Come on fellas, come along and find out just how great Men’s Sheds are. This phenomenon has even spread

to the UK! We will put a coffee on for you!(This meeting will be held under the banner of the Barambah Shed Men.)

WA holiday with Keith KratzmannKALBARRI HAS ALL TOURIST OPTIONS

When you plan a trip over nine weeks taking in overnights at 43 tourist cabins, your public relations with the various WA resorts has to give you a real guidance on the respective centres. Such was the case with Exmouth, but most of all with Kalbarri which is a coastal resort off beat to the North West highway.

Kalbarri, more than any other resort town in Western Australia is perfectly suited for the individual, couple or family looking for a variety of options.

The national park is one of the most exciting and spectacular in the State. Water sports on the lower reaches of the Murchison River are varied while off shore the marine life is without rival. Covering more than 180,000 hectares, the park also offers natural floral beauty spread across the sand plains.

The centre is blessed with a unique marine environment with clean safe beaches side by side supplemented by surfing breaks, towering sandstone cliffs and an abundance of marine life. Several lookouts are positioned around the loop to provide different views of the winding gorge below.

.A key attraction is Nature’s Window, a rock arch that superbly frames the upstream view of the Murchison River. The rugged terrain and relative seclusion of the gorge attracts thousands of visitors each year with short walks and easy access to lookouts.

Tourists can also explore the depths and heights of the river gorges in colours of red and white. Photo: Keith and Gayle on the lower portion of Nature’s Window which is one of the top attractions near the

coastal resort of Kalbarri.

Snake bites are serious and can have serious clinical consequences including multiple organ failure and even death.

Subject: Patient airlifted from Kingaroy Hospital due to snake bite

We are writing to you as a community leader to provide you with the facts about the treatment of snake bite cases at Kingaroy Hospital.

As detailed in the attached media statement, Kingaroy Hospital consistently maintains a supply of antivenin for brown snake, tiger snake, redback spider and also polyvalent which is used when the type of snake bite is unknown. A supply is maintained in the emergency department as well as the on-site pharmacy.

Decisions to transfer patients from Kingaroy Hospital via Careflight or ambulance (road transport) are always based on clinical need and are made in consultation with the Queensland Clinical Coordination Unit.Response:Please attribute to Dr RT Lewandowski, Medical Superintendent, Kingaroy Hospital:Snake bites are serious and can have serious clinical consequences including multiple organ failure and even death.Kingaroy Hospital consistently maintains a supply of antivenin for brown snake, tiger snake, redback spider and also polyvalent which is used when the type of snake bite was unknown. A supply is maintained in the emergency department as well as the on-site pharmacy.Antivenin is not administered at the first step in treatment of a snake bite. Patients are assessed and a range of diagnostic tests are undertaken. Patients continue to be monitored and if clinically appropriate antivenin is prescribed. In the majority of cases, snake bites or suspected snake bites are able to be managed locally at Kingaroy Hospital. However, where the clinical assessment determines an increased level of risk for the patient, they may be transferred to a facility which has an intensive care unit.Decisions to transfer patients from Kingaroy Hospital via Careflight or ambulance (road transport) are always based on clinical need and are made in consultation with the Queensland Clinical Coordination Unit.In the period 1 July 2013 to 31 January 2014 Kingaroy Hospital has admitted 12 patients for snake bites or suspected snake bites.DDHHS is unable to comment on this case in detail due to patient confidentiality.Anyone who has received a venomous bite should apply appropriate first aid, and then attend their local hospital.

27

Access to antivenin within four hours of the snake bite is the critical time factor.Pressure immobilisation is recommended for all species of Australian snakes. It aims to stop the movement of venom from the bite site into the blood stream.Research shows that very little venom reaches the blood stream if firm pressure is applied over the bitten area and the limb is immobilised.Bites to the lower limb:1. Call 000 for an ambulance2. Apply a broad pressure bandage over the bite site as soon as possible. Crepe bandages are ideal, but any flexible material may be used. Clothing, towels etc may be torn into strips. Panty hose have been successfully used.3. Do not take clothing off as the movement of doing so will promote the movement of venom into the blood stream. Keep the patient (and the bitten or stung limb) still.4. Bandage upwards from the lower portion of the bitten or stung limb. Even though a little venom may be squeezed upwards, the bandage will be more comfortable, and therefore can be left in place for longer if required.5. The bandage should be as tight as you would apply to a sprained ankle.6. Extend the bandage as high as possible up the limb.7. Apply a splint to the leg. Any rigid object may be used as a splint. e.g. spade, piece of wood or tree branch, rolled up newspapers etc.8. Bind it firmly to as much of the leg as possible.9. Keep the patient still. Lie the patient down to prevent walking or moving around. Have the patient taken immediately by ambulance to the emergency department of the nearest hospital.Additional information:• Research stresses the importance of keeping the patient still. This includes all the limbs.• Do NOT cut or excise the bitten or stung area• Do NOT apply an arterial tourniquet. (Arterial tourniquets, which cut off the circulation to the limb, are potentially dangerous, and are no longer recommended for any type of bite or sting in Australia.)• Do NOT wash the bitten or stung area. The type of snake involved may be identified by the detection of venom on the skin.• Note: Even if the bitten or stung person is ill when first seen, the application of pressureimmobilisation first aid may prevent further absorption of venom from the bite or sting site during transport to hospital.• If the bandages and splint have been applied correctly, they will be comfortable and may be left on for several hours. They should not be taken off until the patient has reached medical care. The treating doctor will decide when to remove the bandages.Communication and EngagementDarling Downs Hospital and Health ServicePH: 07 4699 8052, Mobile: 0417 795 568
