MSHS Building Project

Murgon State High School is very pleased to announce the imminent construction of a new Administration block and multi-purpose Hall. We would like acknowledge that the Queensland Government has released $11,000,000 for the combined building project. The Hall will provide a much needed undercover space for school parades along with indoor sporting facilities. The Hall will also have the capacity to support theatre/music productions through the installation of stage, lighting and sound rigs. Our school will encourage community use of these facilities. A new Administration block is also planned and will allow for the facilitation of finance, administration, leadership, parent meeting spaces and student sickbay. The current administration facility will become the Student Wellbeing Hub.At Murgon SHS we are all very excited for these facilities and can’t wait for them to start taking shape!(Concept images are shown.) Pictured above: A group of prospective contractors visited Murgon SHS to view the areas in which our new Administration building and school Hall will be built.

Deputy Principal: Student Engagement and Wellbeing

Relief Cleaners Needed

Welcome to Term 3. I am very excited to be acting as Deputy Principal: Student Engagement and Wellbeing for the rest of the year. For those of you who do not know me, this is a very quick history. I taught at Proston SS P – 10 for twenty years before coming to Murgon SHS in 2008 as Head of Department Mathematics/Science. I married Geoff, a local farmer, and we have two sons Matthew and Liam who are proud graduates of Murgon SHS. Our sons played soccer, rugby league and cricket for Murgon, so I have worked in canteens for many years getting to know students and their families. I have taught the mothers and/or fathers of a number of our current students, which is another one of the joys of teaching in a small community.

Wellbeing is vital to leading a happy and successful life. The COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic is causing anxiety, worry and stress for Queenslanders and people across the globe. These are exceptional times, but we are a resilient society with the strength and capacity to cope with difficult situations. There are positive, proactive steps we can all take to support our mental health and wellbeing, and that of our family and friends.

Beyond Blue suggests several ways to manage our mental health and wellbeing.

Try to maintain perspective While it is reasonable for people to be concerned about the outbreak of coronavirus, try to remember that medical, scientific and public health experts around the world are working hard to contain the virus, treat those affected and develop a vaccine as quickly as possible.

Find a healthy balance in relation to media coverage Being exposed to large volumes of negative information can heighten feelings of anxiety. While it’s important to stay informed, you may find it useful to limit your media intake if it is upsetting you or your family.

Try to maintain a practical and calm approach Widespread panic can complicate efforts to manage the outbreak effectively. Do your best to stay calm and follow official advice, particularly around observing good hygiene habits.

Music is also a great stress reliever. Create your own playlist of positive songs. On the last day of Term 2, the wonderfully talented Mrs Wintour and her friend Mr Dean O’Chin put on a concert for students and staff during lunchtime. Here is Jareece Gyemore pretending to sing a duet with Mrs Wintour supported by me, Tanya, Hayley Rattey, Laurie, and Kiya George. We are hoping for more concerts this term.

I look forward to working with all of you in our school community this semester.

New Blue Card Laws

New blue card system laws will take effect from Monday 31 August 2020.

No Card, No Start In the past, paid employees have been allowed to start working with children while their blue card application was being processed. The new laws mean that, from 31 August 2020, paid workers must have a blue card (not a pending application) before they can work with children. Volunteers, trainee students and people operating a business are already subject to No Card, No Start laws.

Changes to the application process To support the introduction of the No Card, No Start laws, there are new online services available and people will be able to apply for their blue or exemption cards online. Anyone who can’t access the online systems can still apply using paper forms. New paper forms will be available on 31 August.

Other changes to the law

Renewals Currently when a volunteer, student or business operator renews their blue card 30 days before their actual expiry date, we allow them to continue to work—even if we haven’t issued their new blue card by the time their previous card expires. From 31 August, card holders will be able to continue to work in paid employment, volunteer, run a business or undertake a student placement as long as they submit a renewal application before their current card expires. If a card holder does not apply to renew their card before it expires, they will be subject to the No Card, No Start laws and will not be able to continue work until a new blue card has been issued.

Exemption cards Another change is that exemption cards will now expire after 3 years. From 31 August, new exemption cards will also carry a photo of the card holder. Existing exemption cards will remain valid until 31 August 2023 and can be renewed at any time until that date. If they are not renewed, they will be cancelled.

Changes in criminal history From 31 August, card holders will not be required to tell their organisation if there has been a change in their police information, and organisations will no longer need to tell us. Instead, card holders and applicants must immediately tell Blue Card Services or risk a maximum penalty of $13,345. We will continue to notify organisations of a change in police information, where appropriate.

Restricted persons and restricted employment The new laws will restrict certain people from relying on current exemptions to work with children, in some circumstances. In addition to the existing penalties for individuals, it will be an offence for a ‘restricted person’ to start or continue in ‘restricted employment’. It will also be an offence for an organisation to employ or continue to employ a ‘restricted person’ in ‘restricted employment’ if they know (or should reasonably know) that they are a restricted person.

New frequency test After 31 August, people won’t need a blue card if they don’t work or volunteer with children for more than 7 days in a calendar year. If the child-related work is more than 7 days, they will need a blue card. There is no minimum frequency for people who run a regulated child-related business. The 7-day frequency test will replace all other frequency tests. Find out more about the frequency test.

Requirement to keep notices In the past, all card holders were required to keep the positive notice letter that came with their card. From 31 August, this will no longer be a requirement.

Better security People who apply after 31 August 2020 will be issued with a card with their photograph on it. This will add an extra measure of security to each blue or exemption card. We’re also changing the way we confirm the identity of people applying for blue and exemption cards. Until now, organisations have been responsible for checking and confirming the identity of applicants. From 31 August, we will confirm an applicant’s identity through a service with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Transition arrangements

Applications in process There are transitional provisions for people who submitted applications before 31 August 2020 that are still being processed when the new laws commence. Those applications will be processed under the previous laws. This includes a paid employee with a pending application.

Existing cards Even though the new cards will include a photograph, existing blue cards (without photos) will still be valid until their expiry date, unless they are otherwise suspended or cancelled, for example, due to a change in police information.

For more information visit www.qld.gov.au/bluecard.

Work Placement Officer News

TAFE at School 2021 Applications are open for TAFE 2021. These courses are aimed toward students enrolled in Years 10, 11 and 12 in 2021. Please see Ms Liebke for further information or phone directly on 4169 9231.

Work Experience The Year 10 Work Experience block originally scheduled for 14-18 September has been cancelled for 2020. If your student has already organised work experience for this week and he/she and the employer is still willing to go ahead please notify Ms Liebke. If you are interested in your student undertaking any work experience which can be organised to occur either Term 3 and Term 4 please contact Ms Liebke.

Proposed/Planned Certificate III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Registered Training Provider: TAFE Queensland

Information RATEP is a community-based teacher education program which enables Indigenous people to become qualified teaching aides and/or registered teachers through the partnership between TAFE Queensland, Education Queensland (State Schools) and James Cook University. This course will be open to young people who identify as Indigenous. It would be preferable for applicants to have a certificate of identity. This is a two-year course, which enables students to exit the course as a qualified Teacher Aide in the early years of schooling. The opportunity exists for students after Year 12 to continue studying to the point of achieving a teaching qualification through James Cook University, while living in the Barambah area.

Students undertaking this course are supported by a full-time teacher who attends Murgon State High School for the two years of study. The course involves students choosing RATEP as one of their senior subjects. Students work through theory units of competency at the RATEP Room at Murgon SHS, with some time spent completing Work Experience in local early years/primary school settings.

There is no cost for senior school students studying the current course through the VET in Schools program thanks to support from the Queensland Government.

As part of the application process, students will complete Literacy and Numeracy Assessments to attain minimum benchmarks or have attained a sound result of C or above in Year 10 English and Maths. A Letter of Recommendation from school is also required as an element of the application process.

The points arrangement with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) towards a student’s Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) at the end of Year 12 is yet to be finalised, but in 2020 the current course was awarded 8 QCE points upon completion.

For further information please contact Roslyn Sharp, RATEP Teacher Co-ordinator Barambah District, on 0436 692 766 or see Ms Liebke.

Anxiety about going to school

It is normal that, at some stage in life, every individual will feel anxious when faced with a difficult situation. Each individual will cope with anxiety in different ways. During difficult times, you can support your child to cope with anxiety in effective ways and by doing so, enhance their resilience. Anxiety becomes a problem when it is persistent and prevents them from enjoying normal life experiences for a long period of time.

How can I tell if my child has anxiety? Signs of anxiety in children may include:

having lots of worries and a strong need for

reassurance

psychosomatic symptoms which occur before

school (e.g. feeling nauseous, shortness of

breath or headaches). When the threat (fear of

going to school) is taken away, the symptoms will

reduce.

crying, being clingy or fidgeting when nervous

sleep problems such as difficulty falling asleep,

nightmares and trouble sleeping alone

fear and avoidance of a range of issues and

situations.

Why are some children anxious about going to school? Anxiety may affect children at any age. The causes of anxiety may be different for young children than for teenagers:

Separation anxiety (being afraid to be away from

parents)

Problems at school such as:

o being bullied

o not having friends, not fitting in, friendship

conflicts

o feeling lost at school

o fear of getting into trouble

o learning difficulties

o not getting along with a teacher.

New situations – whether facing the first day in a

new grade or the first day in a new school, it’s

normal to feel nervous in a new situation.

Failure – worry that their schoolwork will be too

hard, they won’t be able to keep up, or they won’t

know the correct answer when called on in class.

Fear of losing a parent. They may think

something bad will happen to a parent due to:

o a parent being ill

o family problems and fighting

o parents separating

o knowing another child who has lost a parent

or whose family has broken up.

What can parents do? It is important not to dismiss your child’s anxiety, but

to help them see that the situations they are worried

about may not be as bad as they think.

Page 9: Murgon State High School · 2020. 7. 27. · Murgon SHS. Our sons played soccer, rugby league and cricket for Murgon, so I have worked in canteens for many years getting to know students

Listen to your child and encourage them to tell

you about their feelings and fears. Avoid telling your child to ‘get over it’. Your child

may perceive this as you not understanding or

not caring about their concerns.

Discuss various scenarios, possible outcomes

and ways to handle the situation. This will help

put things in perspective.

Show your child how you cope positively when

feeling anxious or stressed. Remain calm and

positive when they are feeling anxious so that

you can help them feel more confident.

Avoid taking over or giving your child the

impression you will fight their battles for them.

Children with anxiety are usually very happy for

someone else to do things for them. However, if

adults take over for them, it stops them from

learning how to cope for themselves as they

begin to believe that someone else will rescue

them. If your child is anxious about failure, remind your

child that everyone makes mistakes and that you

can learn from mistakes. Praise their best efforts. Talk with school staff to find out what assistance

the school can provide. If your child has problems walking through the

school front gate or getting on the bus, arrange

for them to meet a friend before school so they

can go to school together. Alternatively, check if

there is another entrance to the school that your

child feels more comfortable using. If your child delays getting ready for school so

that they will be late, encourage them to still go

to school and reassure them that you will contact

the school to explain why they are late.

Should your child find socialising before school a

source of anxiety, arrange for them to arrive just

before the bell.

Be involved in your child’s school (e.g. volunteer in the tuckshop, participate in the Ready Readers program, or join the P&C). Support your child with homework and study, modelling skills for becoming more independent.

Further assistance Sometimes, all of these things do not work and you

may need assistance from professionals who can

help anxious children. Discuss your concerns with

relevant teachers or year level coordinators to

resolve any school-based issues. If your child

requires additional support, the school’s guidance

officer or school-based youth health nurse may assist

with anxiety support for your child (in an age-

appropriate way) or with a referral to professional

support. Alternatively, you can manage your

concerns regarding your child’s anxiety with your

doctor, who can assist you with a referral to a mental

health professional such as a psychologist,

psychiatrist or therapist. They help children overcome

their anxiety by using methods such as relaxation,

improving self-esteem, improving confidence and

changing the way they think about difficult situations.

Did you know?

Approximately 2-9% of children and teenagers in Australia have anxiety disorders that require mental health professional support.

Children with anxiety symptoms that are left untreated are at a higher risk of developing other mental health difficulties like depression, eating disorders and self-harm.

Children and adolescents with existing difficulties, like a learning difficulty or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be more at risk of anxiety disorders.

Chappy ChatWelcome Back!I trust you all had an enjoyable holiday break. Over the holidays I had the privilege to facilitate the ‘SHINEgirl ‘ program over the 2 weeks. Brisbane based Youth With A Mission (aka YWAM) ran the program, Kingaroy Sistas In Sync donated the resources, Murgon Uniting Church donated the use of their hall plus food items and finance towards the needs of the program. Even some people in the community gave towards the program while I was shopping for it! It was wonderful to know that we had the support of the community in such a great way. This enabled us to provide the program free of cost to the young ladies in our community. Seven young ladies joined us over the 2 weeks learning about their STRENGTH, WORTH and PURPOSE. Chappy Deb, School Chaplain

As part of our school’s wellbeing program, we have a chaplaincy service.

Part of the role of the school chaplain is to provide spiritual support for any students or families who request this.

If you value accessing this service in the season we find ourselves in, or you would like our chaplain to pray for you or your family, you can email Chappy Deb on: [email protected]

From the Guidance Officer

SchoolTV at Murgon State High School

It’s never been more challenging for parents to raise happy, healthy and resilient children. Like never before, parents need to be informed with clear, fact-based information on the many challenges faced by today’s youth. Topics such as youth anxiety, depression, self-harm, drug and alcohol use, cyberbullying and many others need clear explanation and guidance.

SchoolTV is a new ongoing resource that is now available to Murgon SHS parents. Each edition will address a major topic with expert interviews, fact sheets, parent quiz, recommended apps, books and much more. SchoolTV aggregates information from many great resources such as BeyondBlue and ReachOut, amongst others. SchoolTV provides a single stream of independent factual information that saves parents time and confusion of searching online across multiple sites for information.

ABOUT THE EMERGING TALENT PROGRAM

Volleyball Australia Emerging Talent (Queensland) Volleyball Program - This is a partnership between Volleyball Australia (VA), Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) and Volleyball Queensland (VQ). The VA Emerging Talent has been established to provide a high-performance practice environment for athletes that have been identified as having the potential to play Volleyball (Beach and/or Indoor) at state, national and international level with a further goal to develop athletes to compete at the Olympic Games.

What is the Emerging talent squad?

The Emerging Talent squad is an integrated program that will develop grassroots volleyball players and will teach fundamental movement skills as well as volleyball-specific techniques and strategies.

What experience do I need?

Athletes do not need to have any volleyball experience, but a desire to learn, grow and improve as a volleyball athlete is essential.

The VA Emerging Talent Program is complementary to school, club and state squad activities. We highly encourage all Emerging Talent athletes to participate in these other programs simultaneously with their Emerging Talent training.

How much will it cost? If selected in the 2020/21 Emerging Talent Squad, the fee will be $550 inc GST. The squad fee will cover: + Professional coaching and expertise + Weekly court training and equipment + Emerging Talent Squad uniform + Access to the QAS Online Volleyball Portal

How often will We practice?

Emerging Talent Squads will be scheduled for practice once per week*.

Brisbane South – Wednesday Afternoon OR Sunday Morning (2 Centres) Brisbane North – Monday Evening OR Friday Evening (2 Centres) Bayside (Redlands College) – Saturday Morning Sunshine Coast (Mountain Creek) – Thursday Evening Darling Downs (Toowoomba) – Monday Evening South Coast (Gold Coast – Benowa) – Tuesday Evening
