This was specially composed by Moon Pyung Hwang for the 1988 Olympic games which took place in Seoul. The tiger is the national emblem for Korea. The music gradually builds up. Listen for four occasions when the percussion players dramatically stop, and then start off again. In each of the four gaps, a solo player improvises. Several musical elements, or ingredients combine to make “Tiger Dance” vivid and exciting. They include: 1)____________________________________________________ 2)____________________________________________________ 3)____________________________________________________ Now listen to part of the “Prelude” to the opera “Carmen” by Bizet. It begins with eight steady chords played by the trumpets and trombones (brass). Then the tune (melody) is played by the strings. As you listen, wait for the tune to begin - then tap or clap with your fingers or with your foot on the ground in time with the music. Go on doing this until the music ends. Was your clapping steady and even throughout? If it was you were marking the basic beat, or pulse of the music. This provides a steady framework - the “heart-beat” of the music.

It is against this framework that the ear measures other musical events. !On the next page copy the different metres.!A single beat is a basic unit of musical time. Beats are grouped together to make a repeating pattern - made up of either two’s threes or fours.!The repeating pattern gives us the metre, or the time, of the music.!!Each repetition of the beat-pattern is called a bar, or measure.!Some beats carry a stronger accent than others. The first beat of the bar usually carries the strongest accent.!!(a) Duple metre - two beats to a bar!!!!(b) Triple metre - three beats to a bar!!!!(c) Quadruple metre - four beats to a bar!!!!!Conclusion:!La mesure ou le battement dans un morceau de musique nous sert de structure stable. C’est à partir de cette structure stable que nous sentons le rythme.!Vocabulary:!Which took place - qui a eu lieu Listen - Ecouter bar - mesure!gradually builds up - construit progressivement gaps - intervalles! It begins with… - Cela commence avec….. wait - attendre!eight steady chords - Huit accords stable begin - commencer!Brass - cuivre Strings - Cordes fingers - doigts foot - pied!Go on - continue To do - faire steady - stable Beat - battement!pulse - pulsation framework - structure ear - oreille!grouped together - regroupé repeating pattern - motif répétitif
