The Haggin Museum would like to introduce the newest member to our staff. Deborah Wise will serve as the Museum’s accountant. She has over twenty-five years of accounting experience and holds a Bachelors of Science in business administration from John F. Kennedy University.

“I’m thrilled for the opportunity to apply my knowledge and skills to an organization whose focus is to educate the public about art and history. Museums such as the Haggin provide a peaceful haven in an often chaotic world. It’s an honor to be joining the team,” explained Wise.

In her free time, Wise can often be found on the water

paddling her stand-up paddleboard, or in the garden, where her passion for healthy eating is evident in the organic vegetables she grows year round.

EXHIBITIONS

A new exhibition at the Haggin Museum titled American Impressionism: The Lure of the Artists’ Colony opens December 7, 2017 and continues through March 4, 2018. This special exhibition, provided by the Reading Public Museum, gives visitors a unique look into the many approaches and styles of the American impressionism.

This collection of lyrical landscapes, ranging from snow-covered hills to sun-filled harbors and seascapes, penetrating portraits, and remarkable still life paintings documents an important moment in the history of American art. It includes more than 90 total works, including over 70 oil paintings and nearly 30 works on paper dating from the golden age of American Impressionism, the 1880s through the 1940s. A wide range of approaches to impressionism in the earliest twentieth century, including an abiding interest in capturing the effects of light and atmosphere in loosely brushed compositions, is explored.

Leading artists of the movement include William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, Ernest Lawson, Julian Alden Weir, John Twachtman, Chauncey Ryder, Frank W. Benson, William Paxton, Abbott Thayer, Guy Wiggins, Charles Webster Hawthorne, Colin Campbell Cooper, Daniel Garber and Edward Redfield, among others. In addition, American expatriate artists such as Mary Cassatt and John Singer Sargent will be examined.

The newly reimagined art galleries at the Haggin Museum will be open to the public on Saturday, October 14, 2017. The stunning new spaces, designed by internationally recognized design firm Gallagher & Associates, will house the Museum’s collection of late 19th to early 20th century American and European fine art which is comprised of works by Albert Bierstadt, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and more. A new, permanent space dedicated to 20th-century illustrator J.C. Leyendecker will include a rare, in-depth look into his personal life with over 30 original pieces of artwork by the artist.

Each gallery is designed to showcase the Haggin Museum’s core art collection in a new comprehensive way providing a more-connected learning experience for the visitor. Large introductory panels and contemporary labels, which include photographs, highlighting the well-articulated historical content, and guide museum-goers through the spaces. Interactive digital kiosks offer additional engagement for guests, and feature thematic stories that connect the Haggin family history with American and European history.

The American Art Gallery tells the story of the Haggin’s journey to California in the 1850s during the Gold Rush Era. As the family’s prosperity began to grow so did their collection of fine art. The American Art Gallery is separated into three major sections: View Masters, artists merging the European styles with American subject matter; The Hudson River School, trained artists exploring the undiscovered wilderness of the East Coast; Individualism,

an artistic response to the social issues in America. As a whole, this collection of landscapes reflects the Haggin’s immersion in American culture of their time.

The Haggin’s European art collection fills the Haggin and McKee Galleries and highlights the many facets of the glittering world of Europe in the late 19th century. This collection contains a wide array of subject matter such as cityscapes, animal paintings, and even fantasy. It’s apparent that the Haggin family enjoyed the diversity of the art in Europe, as their collection ranges from the more conservative, classical styles to the innovative and experimental works.

“The six remodeled galleries coupled with the in-depth interpretation of our Haggin and Leyendecker art collections represent the most ambitious project in the museum’s 86-year history. These enhancements represent an investment that our Board of Trustees and staff believe will pay great dividends in terms of our visitors’ experience,” explained Tod Ruhstaller, CEO & Curator of History.

HAGGIN MUSEUM REVEALS NEW ART GALLERIES

The vestibule connecting the Haggin and McKee galleries will highlight the story of how three generations acquired such a remarkable collection of art.

OPENING EVENTSRESTORE & REVIVE

Coupled with the newly redesigned art spaces, the Haggin Museum’s Visitor Services Desk will be relocated to Hull Gallery. This new centralized location will serve as the Museum’s hub for visitor services, museum membership, and docent information.

New activity guides were created to spark imagination, creativity, and to foster connections with the history and art collections, and visitor maps were redesigned to be more user-friendly and interactive. These items will be made available in both digital and print formats so families can download a guide before their visits, or pick one up for free at the Visitor Services Desk.

Along with a more-connected and in-depth experience, the redesign of the art galleries will give visitors an opportunity to view artwork that has never been on public display. Two works that have been conserved and will be on view are Jean Beraud’s Scene Place de La Concorde, 1880 (right) and Eugene-Joseph Verboeckhoven’s King of the Heard, 1828 (below).

To get the paintings ready for display they were sent to Northern California Art Conservators to undergo professional deep cleaning and conservation. In addition to the work done by the conservators, our collections department worked closely with docent volunteers to restore many of the painting’s frames.
