The summer exh ib i t ion , which opens on June 8 a t the Museum of
Modern Art , 11 West F i f t y - t h i rd S t r e e t , i s intended to supplement the
Bl i s s co l l ec t i on and tjie permanent co l l ec t ion which w i l l remain on view,
i t i s announced by Alfred H. Barr, J r . , d i reo tor of the Musewn.
"The exh ib i t ion , while by no means complete, should give an
i n t e r e s t i n g survey of modiern pa in t ing and scu lp tu re i n Europe and
America during the l a s t 50 y e a r s , " said Mr. Barr . "Of nineteenth
century pa in t ing , the Bl i s s co l l ec t ion already contains admirable
examples of the work of Cezanne, Daumier, Gauguin and Degas. Paint ings
by other 'old masters* of the modern movement have been len t by p r iva te
c o l l e c t o r s , "
Among the paint ings lent to the Museum for th i s exhib i t ion are:-
van Gogh's "Arles ienne," from the c o l l e c t i o n of Dr. and Mrs. Harry
Bakwin; Gauguin's "poemes Barbares ," lent by A. Conger Goodyear,
president of the Museum; Renoir ' s "Moulin de la G a l e t t e , " len t by John
Hay Whitney; Renoir ' s "The River Bank," aud t h e Toulouse-Lautrec
"Messalina," *oth from the c o l l e c t i o n of Adolph Lewisohn; ; a Begas
pas te l from E. M. M. Warburg and a van Gogh flower pie«e l e n t by James
W. Barney.
The American Thomas Eakins i s represented by an ear ly p o r t r a i t
of the a r t i s t ' s f i ancee . Two lesser-known Suropean pa in te r s of the
older generat ion whose work has r a r e ly been seen in Ameii oa are the
Belgian James Snsor, represented by "Masques" from the Bakwin
c o l l e c t i o n , and Lavis Corinth, sometimes considered the g r e a t e s t *' »
modern German p a i n t e r , represented by a vigorous landsoape from the
co l l ec t ion of Mr. and Mrs. I&rich Conn.
Among contemporary p a i n t e r s , American and French a re
especia l ly emphasized, toge ther with a few p ic tu res by German, gpgi i sh ,
IMtah and Mexican a r t i s t s . The contemporary French masters include
Bonnard, Braque, Derain, Dufy, Roger d e / l a Fresnaye, Gromaire, Loger,
Matisse, Rouault, P i e r r e Roy and Dunoyer de Segonzao. Of the a r t i s t s
working in Pa r i s , examples w i l l be shoran of the work of the Russians
