The 2010 NAAMY Awards of Excellence were presented during the 2011 National Association of Automobile Museums Conference, held April 6-9 at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky. The NAAMY awards annually honor and recognize excellence, professionalism, and creativity within the nonprofit automotive museum field. The museum won the award for its Mickey Thompson: First American to 400 MPH presented by Banks Power exhibit photo book. This pictorial catalog, which was designed in-house by the museum’s staff, was produced in conjunction with the opening of the Mickey Thompson exhibit in February 2010. The book is available for purchase at the museum’s online gift shop for $7.99. To buy a copy, log on to http://store.nhra.com/products/mickey- thompson-book/. CHRR: Turning 20! Get your tickets — only $20 per day — beginning June 16 for the biggest nostalgia drag racing event in the West: the California Hot Rod Reunion presented by Automobile Club of Southern California, to be held Oct. 21-23 at Auto Club Famoso Raceway. Vendors and RV spots are already reserved for the biggest party to hit Bakersfield, and there’s reason to celebrate because the California Hot Rod Reunion is turning 20! Steve Gibbs, museum board member and longtime drag racing official, will serve as this year’s grand marshal. He began his drag racing career in 1961, working part time at San Gabriel Drag Strip and Fontana Drag Strip, and founded the reunion to celebrate drag racing’s heroes. Along with Gibbs, other racing legends who will attend the event are honorees Harry Hibler, Wayne King, John Peters, Dwight Salisbury, and George Santos. The reunion features hundreds of street rods, customs, and muscle cars as well as a swap meet, Manufacturers Midway, three full days of drag racing, a Cacklefest, and plenty of legends and celebrities.
