Dear Fellow Musgrave Residents

We are back!

Yes - we don’t blame you for doubting Musgrave Centre over the last few years. As tenants, we were equally concerned. But - that is behind us now.

Not only have there been significant changes (and improvements) in Centre Management, but I am sure you will all agree that the upgrade is delivering what it promised. New tenants, stylish decor, large open spaces, a food hall are just some of the exciting new features on offer - and that is without even mentioning the new electronic parking system - which guides you to empty bays.

What a pleasure. We have seen a number of new shopping centres open in the last few years - but - there is one thing money can’t always buy - location!

Musgrave’s convenience is difficult to beat! Enjoy your shopping at this iconic destination.

Don Hill Chairman

Tenants Committee

Huge thank you from Centre Manager, Nisha Kemraj

Musgrave’s Centre’s long overdue revamp is finally complete. I know it’s been an eye sore and inconvenience for both retailers and shoppers alike, despite the fact that the changes were absolutely necessary – we simply had to ensure that our grand old lady - Musgrave Centre, was given a fresh new look in line with the evolving times we are living in. The results are a modern, aesthetically pleasing and exclusive shopper’s paradise. For our traditional shoppers, it may take some getting used to, but I am sure that you will grow to love and appreciate the freedom of choice which our expanded selection of stores will bring you.

We are delighted to welcome all new tenants into the mall, and I would like to take the opportunity to thank existing tenants and shoppers for their patience during our revamp. It heralds a new era in Musgrave Centre, and one which will continue to offer shoppers the intimate, personal shopping experience which the mall is famous for.

With winter firmly behind us and Christmas around the corner, we are all no doubt looking forward to better months ahead – but always remembering the less fortunate as we do.

Here’s to a better Musgrave experience, happy shopping!

Nisha Kemraj.

We are thrilled that the Musgrave renovations are complete. The mall has seen some significant changes, all which have created a dramatically improved shopping experience. We would like to extend our thanks to all our loyal shoppers who have continued to support our tenants throughout

the year. We hope you enjoy reading this launch issue of the Musgrave magazine and welcome your comments and feedback which can be sent to [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you in the mall, enjoy your shopping at the NEW Musgrave Centre.

Michelle Shelley,

Marketing Manager Musgrave Centre.

A Note From...

Retailer is a Consumer

According to the Act, an independent retailer can also be a consumer, because a person who enters into a transaction with a supplier is a consumer – but this does not apply to those independent retailers with an annual turnover exceeding R3m.

Rights of consumers

• Consumers have the right to fair value, good quality and safety as well as the right to choose or examine goods. A consumer can return goods if he/she has not been given the opportunity to inspect the goods prior to delivery.

• The goods should be fit for their intended purpose, which means they should be able to function according to the customer’s expectation and as explained by the salesperson at the time of purchase. This includes the colour and size of the packaging — unless the salesperson explains otherwise.

Rights of retailers

• Retailers are not obliged by law to accept goods returned because the consumer has changed his mind, but may do so as a gesture of goodwill.

• Retailers have a right to charge consumers for loss or damage to goods after purchase as a result of gross negligence or recklessness.

• Retailers can choose whether to refund, replace or repair a returned product within six months of purchase if a consumer has changed his mind.

Returns

• If a retailer can prove that goods have been physically altered, there is no right of return (e.g. a shoe that has a worn out sole).

• Damaged goods supplied to a consumer may be returned. It does not apply to any goods if, for reasons of public health or

otherwise, a public regulation prohibits the return of those goods to a supplier.

• If the goods fail to satisfy the requirements and standards referred to above, the consumer may return the goods without penalty and at the suppliers risk and expense, within six months.

• Goods may be returned if they do not perform according to the standards that the customer was made to believe they would (e.g. a camping chair that is supposed to take a weight of 80kg, but collapses under 70kg) or differs from packaging implied.

• Goods may not be returned if they have been partially or entirely disassembled, physically altered, permanently installed, affixed, attached, joined or added to, blended or combined with, or embedded within, other goods or property.

PROTECTIONRetailers have rights too!

There’s still confusion on the new Consumer Protection Act which came into effect this April. To make it easier, we’ve taken out the jargon to reduce misunderstandings over the Act, just as we head towards the busiest time of the year…

Everyone needs a makeover now and then... and the grand old lady Musgrave Centre is no different -

and what a makeover it’s been!

Key featuresWith an intimately sophisticated new image and R140m later, Musgrave Centre is about to regain its spot as the place to be. Interestingly and very cleverly, the Centre has spruced up its look and expanded - without losing its key features: convenience, one hour free parking and boutique stores which set it apart.

Loyal local residentsWith the array of malls in Durban, of course Musgrave Centre needed to up its game to retain local interest – shoppers are, after all, spoilt for choice. But Musgrave Centre offers something distinctly unique – a sense of familiarity and comfort. Regular shoppers, like 48 year old local resident Vivian Chetty, say that’s the reason she’s remained loyal to Musgrave, despite the construction work

over the past year. “I love the new look, and I think as a local, I enjoy shopping there because it has a very calming atmosphere. The new look was definitely needed. Times have changed, and the Centre was looking a bit dated. Now it has a modern, spacious feel, but still has

my regular shops and some new ones too, so I don’t need to split my shopping anymore, I can get pretty much everything at Musgrave now, and also enjoy having a cappuccino there just watching the passing parade - I love it!”

No crowdsMost shoppers agree, saying the new expansion has made shopping a leisurely experience, without feeling overwhelmed by throngs of shoppers. So what’s new? For a start, the aesthetics have improved,

both on the interior and exterior – boasting new lighting, flooring and upgraded ablution facilities.

The new food court also means shoppers have a wider choice of eateries, so diverse tastes can be accommodated, while the

addition of 30 new stores have taken the number of stores in the Centre to well over 120!

Parking first in KZNThere’s nothing more frustrating than having to drive around looking for parking – especially when you need to do some

quick shopping. The good news is that Musgrave Centre is the first shopping mall in KZN to install the IdentiPark parking management system. This facility eases parking congestion and assist shoppers by electronically directing them to vacant parking bays through colour co-ordinated LED lighting (green for vacant, red for occupied) which are visible from a distance - modern, convenient and stress free from the moment you enter Musgrave Centre.

‘Now it has a modern, spacious feel, but still has

my regular shops and some new ones too...’

But we haven’t lost that loving feeling!

Did you know that one in 29 women in South Africa will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their life time? If you’re a woman reading this, take note!

As many women lead busy lives - working, taking care of the home and their families - the last thing on their mind is keeping track of health and diseases such as breast cancer. Yet, one of the most serious diseases faced by women is cancer. The good news is that it does not mean death – more women are surviving breast cancer largely as a result of early detection, better screening, and more awareness on the issue.

Self-examination of breasts is keySimple breast self-examination regularly can help detect the disease early for treatment and there is a good chance of beating the disease. All it takes to keep track of your health is to do breast self-examination once a month during ovulation. Try to do the examination at the same time of day every month. Remember many women have lumps in their breasts – this is normal, but if you see any change

in your breasts or underarms, speak to a doctor about an examination. Many lumps in the breast are harmless but they all must be checked.

Lumps don’t necessarily mean cancerIf you are over 40-years-old ask your doctor about a special x-ray which finds lumps in the breast. It does not mean a lump definitely means cancer. Nine out of 10 lumps don’t have cancer. The doctor will look at and examine the breast from the collar bone to the bra line and from the arm pit to the breastbone.

Age is not a deterrentMany people think it won’t happen to me, breast cancer happens to other women. If you think you are too young to have breast cancer - think again. While older women are at a higher risk, younger women are not immune. While most women are over 50-years-old when they are diagnosed, women in their 20’s or 30’s are also getting diagnosed. Women whose mothers, sisters or grandmothers have had the disease are more at risk but the risk is even higher if your family member had it before the age of 50.

Pregnancy and breastfeedingIf you are breastfeeding your baby it does not mean you are protected against breast cancer. But women who fall pregnant twice before the age of 30 and who breastfeed for 18 months are considered low risk, while women who have never given birth or has a baby after the age of 35 are more at risk.

If you feel healthy now, just being a woman and getting older puts you at risk of breast cancer. Regular check-ups will give you peace of mind. For more information or advice contact CANSA toll free on 0800

22 66 22 or www.cansa.org.za

If you have noticed one of the following changes in your breast it is time to take a second look.

• There is a lump in or near the breast or in the armpit area;

• The breast changes in size or shape;

• The skin of the breast dimples or puckers;

• The nipple turns inward into the breast;

• There is an unusual discharge from the nipple;

• The skin on the breast, nipple or the dark area surrounding the nipple is scaly, red or swollen;

• The skin of the breast has the look or feel of an orange peel.

October is breast cancer awareness month

South Africans waking up to healthy eating

We may not be known as a nation for a penchant for freshly juiced sea weed, but South Africans appear to be shaking off their sluggish eating habits and embracing the concept that healthy food can be delicious - if the growing success of health fast food chain Kauai is anything to go by.

Gone are the days when we associated health food with carrot sticks or lettuce leaves. Speaking to the Musgrave Centre Magazine, the mall’s Kauai Franchisee, Don Hill, described the changing attitude to good food. “It’s a fact. In the past, if someone said they were eating healthily, we often associated this with diets, small portions, boring salads and so on. The Kauai brand has turned this myth on its head. Not only is the food freshly prepared and incredibly delicious, there is no holding back with the portions. So essentially most meals sustain one for a long time – which means that if you have our infamous

magma wrap for lunch, then it’s highly unlikely that you will want to nibble away at snacks before your evening meal.”

A recent marketing survey revealed that many customers, when ordering Fast Food, agreed that the anticipation of the meal far outweighed the experience. With today’s fast paced lifestyle – even in laid back Durban there is little thought given to nutrition or health as more working families opt for fast, convenient food. The emergence of Kauai has meant an equal offering of fast food – with a health twist, which means no guilt or binge eating!

The company is fast becoming an outlet of choice, with a growing footprint at Virgin Active gyms and plans to open 40 new stores over the next three years.

Not bad going for a company that started out being a vision of three American College boys, supplying freshly squeezed juices to local hotels!

No wonder they say Kauai is ‘good mood food!”

It’s the ultimate question that’s been asked a thousand times, answered a million times over, yet it remains a

mystery to men, who often ask ‘what do women really want!’

Well, we’ve done tons of research, spoken to several experts, and have come up with the following top things women want in a man, so take note!

Listen, don’t dictate

Most women today are career driven, and often when things get tough, she needs you to simply listen to her problems. DO NOT OFFER JUMP IN AND OFFER ADVICE! She just wants you to pay attention while she vents, and will ask for your advice if she needs it – just listen to her when she needs you to.

Cuddle more

Women need to be held and cuddled without it leading to sex every time. Be loving and kiss and simply hold her without expecting it to lead to something more every time.

Be romantic.

She may be a tough modern day woman, but she still has a traditional outlook to love. She wants to be treated like a lady – surprise her with flowers or small gestures

of love to remind her how much she means to you.

Be sensitive to her needs

A woman needs to have an emotional connection in order to be intimate - in that way we’re quite different to men! Treat her well during the day and you’re more likely to be rewarded at night…

Be neater.

Wives and girlfriends HATE, I repeat, HATE having to pick up after a man. It’s just common courtesy to do things like put your dirty clothes in a washing basket instead of leaving them on the floor for her to trip over, or wash some dishes, or put things away.

Be able to have a conversation.

If we can’t have a good conversation with you about things besides finances, kids, jobs, household concerns, etc. life is going to feel boring. Engage her about her interests and what she wants to discuss.

Be equal partners.

Women need your emotional support as well as need you to share the financial responsibilities. Co-parenting is especially important to ensure a happier and stress free home environment. Help with the chores, even if you work all day – remember a woman who stays at home is working all day too (unless she has a nanny, cook, cleaner, chauffer at her beck and call!).

Appreciate her efforts

Compliment her when she prepares a meal especially for you, or turns up on a date looking like she’s just had her hair done. Women like to feel appreciated, especially when they make an effort to please. Don’t just grunt; say it like you really mean it too!

Make her laugh

This is often described as the number one trait women look for in a man! It doesn’t mean you need to do cart wheels all day or turn into a red nosed clown. Just having a sense of humour and making her laugh is enough to melt any woman’s heart.

A happy woman means a happier home and quite possibly a better sex life!

... What do women really want in a relationship?

be equalpartners

It’s been three years since Megan Coleman scooped the title of Miss SA, and together with her mother, has been running a dynamic image consulting business, transforming the looks of both men and women – with remarkable success.

The business was the brainchild of mum Fay, who began the business 25 years ago after training with a Canadian company. “Megan joined me 3 years ago after handing over her crown as Miss South Africa. Megan developed a heart for wanting to help women reach their full potential and develop a good self-image, after coming into contact with so many women during her reign, and helping other’s improve their confidence through a better image is what we do in our business – we love working together and our different gifts complement each other, which makes for a well balanced team,” explains Fay.

Together, the duo work with their client by focussing on the person as a unique individual rather than a one glove fits all look. “We get to the ‘core’ of who they are and work with that, we never put our own likes and preferences onto anybody, but we work with their individual colouring, figure type and clothing personality, which makes them feel comfortable with their new image,” adds Fay.

Ladies! Meet the team for an exclusive morning of colour and style advice on Saturday 22 October in Musgrave Centre between 10h00 and 12h00. Booking essential. Contact Melissa on 031 201 5129. And Best of all, the event is FREE!

“There isn’t a woman out there who doesn’t want to look beautiful and this is what Fay and Megan Coleman of Image Insured are gifted at”, says Joanne Christenson, 38. “They have the unique ability to bring out the best in a woman, while making them feel confident and comfortable with their new look!”

Joanne was at a loss as to how to dress and what to do with her hair. Fay and Megan, working with her skin tone, eye colour and natural hair colour, assessed that she had ‘warm undertones’, which meant that her whole look had to change, said Fay. “The grey hair and pinks, white and blue tones that she loved to wear had to go, and her entire wardrobe, make-up, accessories and hair had to change to more flattering warm, earthy tones!. We also did a ‘figure assesment’ which revealed that Joanne had an A-shaped figure”, said Fay, “so we had to balance her body by widening her shoulders and avoiding lines that would broaden her hips”. Grant Harper of Scott & Wells (Gateway), used golden auburn brown tones to bring warmth into Joanne’s hair and shortened it with graduation and layers. The result ............ Joanne looked 10 years younger!

“Style does not come through following fashion, but through learning what looks good on YOU!” - Former Miss SA Megan Coleman and her mother Fay of Image Insured.

Billed as the best land-based whale-watching platform in the world, Hermanus in Cape Town is where the great Southern Right whales migrate from the ice cold Antarctic winter to its coastal bays to mate and to calve. It is a spectacular sight which draws tourists from all over the world, as the ocean between Hermanus and Gansbaai explodes with action as these mega-mammals breach, tail-flap and spout within eye-balling distance of eager humans lining the cliffs and shores. It’s less than 100 kilometres south of the

southernmost tip of Africa, L’Agulhas, where the Atlantic and Indian oceans “officially” meet.

Referred to as the ‘The Riviera of the South,’ the town of Hermanus which has a mellow Mediterranean climate comes alive during October, as people celebrate the return of the gentle giants to their waters – a sight to marvel and music to the ears - as long as you don’t mind being woken to the sounds of whales blowing at night!

THE PLACE TO BE IN OCTOBER -Hermanus for whale watching!

Some interesting facts on the Southern Right Whale:

• Known as a migratory whale, they spend one season in one place and the rest of the year in another, travelling long distances between these seasons. • One female will mate with a number of males. There can be even up to 8 males at a time trying to mate with one female. During mating, there is a lot of activity on the surface (splashing, pushing, shoving, large and frequent blows). The mating strategy is known as sperm competition.

• Females usually have one calf every three years.• Most calves are born during August and suckle for 4 to 8 months and drink up to 600 litres of milk per day!• Females measure about 13.9m and males are generally slightly smaller. They have a life expectancy of about 50 years. Their number grows by about 7% every year, which means that their population doubles every 10 years. The number of Southern Right Whales should be back to what it used to be in 2040.

A real life story of how the sought after gem got its name.

It’s found in only one place in the world — the foothills of Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro. But the question of who

found it first is hotly contested to this day.

The more well-known version is that the striking blue gem named tanzanite was discovered in 1967 by Manuel de Souza, a tailor from Goa, India, who immigrated to Tanzania where he followed his dream of prospecting for precious stones. Sceptics, however, believe he may have been led there by locals.

Determined to set the record straight, Manuel’s geologist son Angelo de Souza (61) has made it his life’s mission to ensure the family story is heard and officially accepted. He emphasises he is not in it for financial gain, simply the truth, adding that he ‘does not want to reap a cent from the commercialization of the stone, simply recognition of his late father’s discovery of it’.

Among those who credit Manuel de Souza with the find are geologist John Saul, who founded the International Coloured Gemstone Association, and Tanzanite One, the largest miner of the gem. De Souza’s discovery is backed by his registered claim and maps of the site of his find. “The evidence is there, including the registration of the gem, initially thought to be a type of olivine, as basic field tests pointed to it as the closest match. The facts speak for themselves,” says Angelo, who

dismisses rumours that his father was led to the find by villagers. “The reality is there was no village there at the time, and why would anybody lead an insolvent Indian immigrant to such a rare find, considering there were dozens of wealthy prospectors close to the area who would have paid a fortune to be taken there?” he questions.

The story goes that Manuel gave a sample of his find to a gemologist who showed it to Henry Platt, then chairman of Tiffanys in New York. Platt was struck by it but reportedly said: “What woman wants to wear a stone called Zoisite [the generic name then being used] which sounds like suicide? Let’s call it tanzanite, in tribute to

its country of origin.”

This, apparently, is how tanzanite was welcomed into the luxury gem market, and later made famous by screen legend Elizabeth Taylor who was well known for her love of Tanzanite jewellery.

Angelo – a geologist by profession is angered that marketing and Tanzanian authorities seem reluctant to credit his father with the discovery, preferring instead

to associate it with the more romantic image of indigenous Masai warriors, especially since tanzanite’s global commercial success.

Angelo recently bought a house in Umhlanga where both he and his world renowned

patisserie wife Rosa spend part of the year and the rest of it in their UK home.

Despite living a life of comfort, Angelo has vowed to continue fighting for his father to be recognized as the discoverer of Tanzanite. “I have the facts and evidence to back up my father’s claim, yet there are still those in the industry who seek to spin their own versions based on hearsay rather than solid proof. My father sacrificed many things for his passion of prospecting. I owe it to him to ensure that his role is not forgotten. That is all I want — nothing more, nothing less,” adds Angelo.

...and later made famous by screen legend Elizabeth Taylor who was well known for her love of Tanzanite jewellery.

Despite all of nature’s offerings to us, we are human, and so life’s misfortunes like the death of a loved one, divorce, recession, loneliness etc can leave one unable to appreciate the good that still exists. It’s often human nature to dwell more on the negatives than celebrate the positives that life’s deck of cards deals us. Well, spring is well underway; the year is nearly over, so how about dusting yourself off the ground, pulling yourself up by your boot straps and getting back your mojo? Whatever life throws at you, you’re still here - so go on, celebrate the gift of life! We’ve compiled the following list to help you get started:

1. Begin by pampering yourself. A visit to a good hairdresser will do wonders for your state of mind. If the shampooist is skilled at head massage, relax and enjoy the bonus! Change your hair style or colour, just try something different for the sake of change! Join a day spa and have several massage or facial treatments – it will lift your spirit.

2. Join a gym. Start slowly and, if possible, engage a personal trainer for your first visits. Regular exercise releases endorphins, nature’s way of squirting sunshine into your veins!

3. Plan a holiday. Travelling opens the

mind and brings new experiences. Rope in a friend if you like, or go it alone. Travel agents advise on tours specially designed for singles. Or try camping – recent research at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK found time spent close to nature profoundly boosts

psychological well-being. Campers revealed lower stress levels and increased

confidence.

4. Visit Musgrave Mall for coffee or a light lunch. Chill out and watch the passing parade (people watch in other words!) You’ll see sad people, anxious people, others brimming with life. It will help you to take the focus off your inner turmoil. And you might even meet a new friend.

5. Help others, it will make you realise that no matter how overwhelmed you may be with your problem, there is always someone out there worse off. Being charitable also leaves you feeling good.

6. Stay away from the television for a while and quit being a coach potato, feeling sorry for yourself – the world owes you nothing, nada, zilch. The sooner you realise this, the quicker you’ll want to get things done for yourself.

7. Change your job if it makes you

unhappy, but find another one before you do!

Spending most of your waking life at a dead end job being miserable is going to kill your soul. But opportunities will never present themselves in a box with a big red bow and addressed to you. Go out there and make things happen, no matter what the challenge. Create your own masterpiece of life, be your own Picasso – the world, my friend, is your canvas – go on, colour it rich, stand up and be counted!

Here’s to getting your mojo back!

The clock of life is wound but once, And no man has the power To tell just when the hands will stop At late or early hour.

To lose one’s wealth is sad indeed, To lose one’s health is more, To lose one’s soul is such a loss That no man can restore.

The present only is our own, So Live, Love, toil with a will Place no faith in “Tomorrow” For the clock may then be still.

By Robert H Smith.

Spaghetti with meatballs – the authentic Italian South African way!

Method

Place the mince, onion, finely chopped herbs, spices and egg in a bowl and combine well with your hands. Using slightly damp hands, mould the mixture into golf size balls and set aside.

Heat the olive oil and butter in a heavy based saucepan gently until the butter starts to sizzle. Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, garlic, pinch of salt, paprika and a palm of finely chopped Italian herbs. Stir and bring to the boil gently before reducing the heat. Allow to simmer for around 45 minutes to 1 hour. Reduce the heat and allow to cook gently for another

15 minutes until it reduces in consistency but is still fairly thick.

Heat the oven to 180 Celsius and place the meat balls on a lightly oiled tray and bake for 10-15 minutes.

While this is baking, cook the spaghetti in salted boiling water and drain.

Add the meatballs to the tomato sauce and serve over spaghetti with grated parmesan.

Mangia bene, vivi felice! Eat well, live happy!

1/2 onion finely chopped

M MAGAZINE | OCTOBER | 22

Children are demanding and when their needs are not met often present with negative behaviour –

especially for working parents. The days of free outside play has been replaced by indoor activities like the Xbox, leaving little room (if at all!) for exercise and fresh air. The results over the past few years point to an alarming rise in the number of children requiring Occupational Therapy, prescribed medication and other interventions – coupled with a generation of children who have become unmanageable both at school and home.

Enter 56 year old super nanny and behavioural consultant Cheryll Koenig who has spent most of her life trying to make the world a better place for children with behaviour and learning difficulties. After more than 30 years of teaching (including top private schools), she now runs her own workshops and private consultations to bring about calm in the home environment [sometimes doing school visits as well] for children who find it difficult to cope – and all this without medication. We caught up with this feisty lady with endless bounds of energy and asked her about the modern day challenge of dealing with children with learning difficulties.

1. What made you branch out from being a teacher to a behavioural consultant?

Over the years I spent a lot of time studying children’s behaviour, and when two of my own children were diagnosed with learning difficulties I realised that through correct behaviour management

and diet, children with learning challenges can benefit tremendously without undue pressure being put on them. After seeing the success in my personal life and in my own classrooms, I decided to venture out on my own and assist parents and sometimes through my workshops teachers and teacher assistants in the same way.

2. More children are being prescribed Ritalin as a way of managing their behaviour, is your method a viable alternative?

Professionally I agree that in certain cases children do need and respond well to Ritalin and other similar stimulants. However personally I feel it is often over prescribed without other options being considered. In my own experience, I have found that although it is a more difficult and time consuming option, many children with learning difficulties can benefit from a more holistic approach i.e. a change in diet, better management of behaviour, less screen activity and training for parents to manage their child.

3. So what do you offer as an alternative?

Each child is different, so it is certainly not a case of one glove fits all. My main focus is to bring calm back into the home and hopefully then into the school too by ensuring that learning is a positive experience for the child – there’s nothing worse than expecting an

unhappy child to learn. My first meeting is usually with the parent to discuss the challenging behaviour, then I observe the child at home or where necessary in the classroom. Following all this, a plan is put together for all parties, which includes parents and sometimes teachers. This is not something that is simply handed out and forgotten, but I work very closely to ensure that the recommendations are carried out. I also conduct weekly sessions with the child using positive affirmations and occupational and speech therapy homework that has been put into place by a therapist. During these sessions I focus on the child’s difficulties in a fun way and in a learning style that suits them. It’s about a partnership to ensure the child benefits. I’m not an occupational therapist, psychologist or a child specialist in medical terms, but I work very closely with these professionals so that the child receives the best of both approaches – and it works very successfully! Consistency and commitment are key.

Musgrave Centre has a celebrity tenant in its midst! Stefan Burczak who is a personal trainer at the Muscle & Fitness Gym in Musgrave Centre, is KZN’s top under 21 body builder, after scooping the title in the recent KZN IFBB Championships. Despite the accolade, the twenty year old is not a pumped up, egocentric macho hunk we often associate body builders to be. Instead, he is a regular, down to earth guy – with rippling muscles and a soft spoken personality to calm down fluttering females who may be in awe of those biceps! We put Stefan on the spot to find out how he made it to the top at a young age.

What’s your secret to all those muscles?

Stefan: It’s 70% healthy eating, and 30% regular exercise. I start my day with a bowl of Jungle Oats, a Protein shake and 6 egg whites before spending at least an

hour and half working out every day.

When did you begin body building on a competitive level?

Stefan: I entered last year for the first time in the East Coast Classic Body Building competition and came 4th, which was quite an achievement for a first time entrant like myself. It took a lot of hard work and determination though; it’s not something I just woke up to.

What kind of foods do you avoid?

Diet is key to good health and for a body builder, it’s important to have good carbs. This means no bread, no sugary foods, and plenty of high protein. I also don’t drink or smoke.

Not bad going for a twenty year old – and for all you single females who may be wondering: the good news is that he is SINGLE (for now anyway)!
