Dear Pianists, Organists, Keyboardists and Teachers:
We believe that it is so important to encourage and motivate keyboard players in their musical
development and to offer opportunities for growth both spiritually and musically. This Keyboard Festival
is designed to do just that. You will see below the purpose and objectives of the festival. We encourage
you to participate and encourage others to participate.
Purpose The purpose of this festival is to inspire, motivate, encourage and nurture organists, pianists and electronic keyboardists, both now and in future generations, for the privilege of serving in the music ministry of the local church.
Objectives Spiritually… To provide opportunities for keyboardists to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ.
To challenge individuals to share their faith through music.
To improve and enhance worship by fostering the continuing development of keyboard skills.
Musically…
To encourage the training of the keyboardist with the necessary skills of hymn-playing, sight-reading, solo playing, playing accompaniments, improvisation, modulation, transposition, playing in an ensemble and accompanying of congregational singing.
To challenge individuals to play service music with a higher degree of accuracy, ability and integrity.
This year, we will only offer levels for piano. We hope to add organ in the future.
I encourage you to partner with us as we seek to meet these objectives. Visit our website at gbcmusicandworship.org for more information.
Sincerely,
Judy Crumley

Questions & Answers Q&A—Participation
Who is eligible for participating in the Area Keyboard Festival?
Any keyboard student who wishes to further his or her ability to accompany worship or perform in church as a solo-player from kindergarten through high school senior ages
Any church pianist/keyboardist or organist who wishes to further his or her ability to accompany worship or perform in church as a solo-player
Is there an age limit for registrants?
No.
Do you have to belong to a Southern Baptist Church in order to participate?
No. Anyone can register and play for adjudication.
Q&A—Levels How do I choose which level to enter?
Review the requirements for each level and choose a level in which a participant is able to complete all of the requirements for that level.
Q&A—Adjudication What is the length of time for each participant to play for adjudication?
For each category, the allotted time for each participant will be 20 minutes. Any time left over after fulfilling all requirements will be spent on individual coaching.
How will we get our adjudication sheets and music after finishing?
A monitor will take music and certificate to the check-out table. You may pick up your music at the check-out table. Please make sure that either the student’s or teacher’s name is on the music. We are not responsible for lost music if there is no identifying name on the music. For those participants who are not of music camp age or who do not wish to be considered for a music camp scholarship, adjudication sheets may be picked up at the check-out table. Adjudication sheets for participants who are considered for music camp scholarships will be mailed after the festival.
6
Does the selection I am playing need to be marked in any certain way for the judges?
Yes. The participant needs to paper-clip or bookmark the book so it will open to the correct page.
All the measures should be numbered in pencil. The book or sheet music must have the participant’s or teacher’s name clearly printed on it.
Is it possible for siblings or all of the participants from a particular teacher, or car-pool participant to be assigned adjudication times close together?
Yes, but only if it is indicated on each pertinent registration form. As the schedules are completed in our office, we will strive to honor every request concerning times of adjudication. Please be careful to fill out every registration form with the correct information and the requests for “This participant needs to be scheduled with or close to…”
Are parents, siblings, friends, etc. allowed to listen while the participant plays for adjudication?
No. We ask that only the participant enter the room where adjudication takes place.
What form of incentive is received?
Each participant will receive a certificate with a seal and ribbon. A blue ribbon represents a Superior rating (highest); a red ribbon represents an Excellent rating; a green ribbon represents a Good rating.
$100 scholarships for one of the Georgia Baptist music camps will be awarded to three of the top qualified participants at each festival location (students in grades 3 through college freshman) and may be applied toward the cost of music camp (one scholarship per camp.) Please visit our website at http://gabaptistworshipmusic.org/event/surge150/ for more information.
Q&A—Literature Are we allowed to use copied music?
No. Copying music without permission from the publisher is a violation of the federal copyright laws of the United States. If you have sought and received permission from the publisher, you may use a copy of the published music for the adjudicator only. This copy must have the copyright acknowledgement as it appears on the music and the added phrase “Used by Permission”. The judges will destroy the copies following the festival. It is the responsibility of each teacher to not allow or encourage, by example, their students to use or keep copied music. There are no exceptions for this guideline.
Can participants share books between adjudications?
Yes. If participants need to use the same books for the judges, please indicate on the registration form that you would like to schedule them as close together as possible. We will endeavor to arrange the schedules to allow books and music to be shared between participants and adjudicators.
Do we observe repeat signs within the repertoire selections?
Yes, if the piece does not exceed 5 minutes. However, if the piece is longer than 5 minutes, you may opt for not taking the repeats. The participant will need to notify the judges if this is the case.
Is it allowed to play only part of the selection?
No. You must play a complete selection or a complete movement of a larger piece.
7
Q&A—Sight-Reading For Levels 1-12, music will be provided by the judge for sight-reading.
You will be required to sight read music that is 2 levels below the level in which you enter.
Q&A—Transposition In Levels 1-12, do I need to bring music to transpose?
Yes. You may use the original music that you bring to transpose to another key (of your choice.) You may not have the transposition written.
Q&A—Modulation In Levels 6-12, what is involved in modulation?
You choose the keys that you want to use in the modulation and play chord progressions to modulate from one key to the next.
