November 2018
Greetings,
How do you pray?
In a recent lesson from Praying with Jesus, the leader James Bank’s challenge was to Sit, Stay, and Pray. His point is that in our fast pace life we hate to wait. This is true even when we pray. We want God to answer our prayers as we say them, we don’t have time to wait for God to answer.
We approach prayer as an effort to get God to do what we want instead of approaching prayer as an opportunity to keep company with God. When we rush through our prayers we deprive ourselves of God’s mercies, which are new each day.
Author and speaker Mary Lou Quinlan claims that her mother “inhaled a worry and exhaled a prayer.” She says this because her mother had a habit of writing down prayer requests and keeping them in a special place, her “God Box.”
There was one rule related to these petitions. According to Mary, “If anyone ever worried about the request, Mom would say, ‘If you think you can handle it better than God, it’s coming out of the box.’ ” This helped Mary and her family to let go of their concerns.
God wants us to release our fears and troubles into His hands, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” - Matthew 11:28. This takes a bit of effort. It requires that we sit, stay and pray.
First, we need to follow Paul’s advice and discuss our concerns with God. He said, “Pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him” - Philippians 4:6. When you stop and think about it we have two choices - continue to worry or begin to pray.
If we worry again, we are telling God that we are not sure He’s strong enough or willing to take care of the issue. We are rewriting the Scripture that says, “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you” - 1 Peter 5:7. If you worry, my version says: “Cling to your problems, because God is unconcerned with your life.”
The truth is, God loves His children. His design for our lives doesn’t include worry as a way to solve problems. “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” - Matthew 6:27.
The discipline of prayer, however, can help us to see His power and remember His past provision for us. Committing our worries to Jesus can help us find peace when we’re stressed. “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:7
This peace “exceeds anything we can understand . . . it will guard our hearts and minds as we live in Christ Jesus.”
Godspeed
Pastor Rich

PRAYING WITH JESUSWed. Nov. 7 @ 1PM
This will be a 6th and final session. The theme is Praying with Jesus. We never really pray alone, because the Holy Spirit “helps us” when we pray, but God’s Word also encourages us to pray with others. In this last session we will see examples from contemporary life and from scripture of the importance of believers praying together.
IT IS IN THE BUILDINGThe new frame for our resurrection window has been delivered and is in the sanctuary. NOTE: it is not in the wall.Assembly and installation of the frame will begin shortly. Once installation of the frame is complete the windows will be inserted into the frame. This phase of the work is estimated to cost $115,000. We are still raising and accepting funds to help finance this project.

BECAUSE OF BETHLEHEMNOVEMBER 28TH @ 1PM
A remarkable gift can arrive in an unremarkable package. One did in Bethlehem more than 2,000 years ago. No one expected God to come the way he did. Yet the way he came was every bit as important as the coming itself. The manger is the message. JOIN US as we explore how the One who made everything chose to make himself nothing for us. Because of Bethlehem, we no longer have marks on our record, just grace. We have the promise that God is always near us, always for us, always within us—and that we have a friend and Savior in heaven. Session Titles:
1. God Has a Face 2. Worship Works Wonders3. God Guides the Wise4. Every Heart a Manger

In Attendance: Nikki Wesen, Dave Hastings, Matt Park, Nick Bamond, Lois Jessen, Greg Reeves, Debbie Kovacs, John Garback, Beckie Rumen, Debbie Paley, Melanie Dwyer, Sean Sullivan, Pastor Rich
Meeting called to order at 7:38pm by Pastor Rich who opened the meeting with a devotion on being “Set Apart.” The idea is two-fold; we are set apart as Christians in our thinking and our actions. However we also need to set apart time for God. We need to take the time to slow down, be silent, and experience God. “But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” – 1 Peter: 15-16 September’s meeting minutes were approved without change. Motioned by Greg R./seconded by John G.
Correspondence- Notes from Becca Krakowski and Kathy Shanabrook each expressing a need to step down from consistory. We will be looking for two new consistory members to finish out their terms. Finances- Our loss for September is $4,301.86. YTD loss is $47,751.69.- September’s communion offering of $1,335 will go to Milltown FD.- We have approximately $115,000 remaining in payments for the stained glass window project.- AC in sanctuary needs to be replaced; cost is approximately $25,000. We are trying to use the remainder of the social hall floor insurance settlement to cover this expense.

Ministry TeamsChurch & Family- Our next Senior Luncheon will take place on Wednesday, October 17th. Pastor Rich will share church questionnaire with the seniors.Spiritual Life- We will host a Veteran’s Day Service/Luncheon on November 11th. Education- Sunday School enrollment/attendance is low.- Adult study (Praying with Jesus) has been meeting on Wednesdays.- Senior Youth Group mission trip will take place in Savannah, GA and will be led by Jeff Rumen.- Confirmation class is a nice size with 13 youth!
Property- We spent $1200 to have our social hall floor stripped and sealed. We still need to repair the boards in a few places. The remainder of the insurance settlement money can be used towards the purchase of a new AC system for the sanctuary.- Our fall cleanup is scheduled for Sunday, 11/11.- The parsonage needs a new oven but this is not an urgent need. We plan to have this taken
care of in 2019. Old Business- We had a profit of approximately $330 on Milltown Day. Thanks to Nikki Wesen for spearheading this and all the volunteers who helped make this day a success. - Sean Sullivan has organized 5 Transition Teams with a few consistory members on each team. We plan to promote these teams over the next few Sundays during announcements and with a flyer in the bulletin.- The fourth Monday of the month is now designated as a meeting night for our Transition Teams. Our first meeting will be held on Monday, 10/22.- Sean S. will reach out to Senior Youth Group and the praise band in order to obtain information for our church profile.
New Business- We discussed the 2019 Budget and noted Debbie Paley’s suggestions for some minor changes. Consistory will continue this discussion over e-mail. We plan to approve the budget at the start of our Transition Team meeting on 10/22.- We are looking to fill two positions within consistory. The replacements are welcome to finish out the remainder of the terms they would be filling (1-year and 2-year periods). We will take nominations at our congregation meeting in November.- Right Now Media reached out to see if we would be interested in hosting a discipleship opportunity. There are three events/dates to choose from. If we were to host, we would be responsible for publicizing, getting individuals to register online, providing refreshments, and displaying the simulcast. We would receive 50% of the profits. Pastor Rich will respond back that we would like more information on this before we proceed with a decision.
Future Dates- Transition Team Meeting – October 22- Congregational Meeting – November 11- Consistory – November 12
