Religion/SS: Sandland

Religion → Learners focus on several important feast days this week. They will consider the meaning of All

Hallowed Eve, the eve before the great feast of All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation. We will also reflect

on the importance of praying for those who have passed away, as we celebrate on November 2 the feast of

All Souls Day and learn a prayer they can pray for their deceased loved ones.

Social Studies → This week, learners complete their study of California’s geography by learning about each

of the four regions’ industries and adaptations to unique challenges in each region.

We then move into Early Settlements and Exploration, in which learners will briefly explore Native Californian

tribal cultures- studied in third grade- then they will discover the Spanish exploration of The Americas, and

more specifically, California, by such Spanish conquistadors as Hernando Cortes and Juan Cabrillo.

Cursive → Learners continue practicing numerals and often-misspelled words due to cursive errors.

Reading/Writing: Silva

Reading→ Last week in reading, learners continued to revise their envisionment work. This week we will be

focusing on character work, identifying the traits of our characters and finding evidence in our books to

support our ideas.

Writing→ Writers have been thinking about the motivations and struggles of their characters and wrote

scenes to show (and not tell) their readers about these struggles. They learned that fiction writers try to write

in a way that keeps their reader engaged at all times, anxious to turn the page. They planned their stories by

creating a story arc which shows their character’s problem getting worse and worse before it is finally

resolved at the end. This week they will get busy writing the heart of their stories.

Grammar & Technology→This week in Grammar we will be focusing on adjectives and superlative

adjectives (ending in -est and -er). Due to the shortened week, there will be no formal grammar assessment

or grammar HW. Google Classroom has been set up for each ELA class and anchor charts, as well as

learning progressions can be found on the website. Learners have begun using the website SEESAW and

are anxious to share their work with you. By the end of the day tomorrow, all learners should have their

writing story arc uploaded to the website. Login information is attached to this email.

Math→ Last week, learners found the multiples of a number. Learners saw first hand how important it is to have a strong foundation in multiplication facts when working with multiples. For those who have been practicing, multiples came very quickly! We discussed the different ways to find the multiples of a number, all methods relying on their multiplication facts. Towards the end of the week, we covered LCM (least common multiple). This week, we will be exploring multi digit multiplication through arrays and area models. Learners will be able to apply the distributive property from Simple Solutions to to make area models. Science→ Last week learners continued to explore force. We made charts and had a hands on experience in the Makers Space. Learners created marshmallow launchers then tested distance. Learners were able to see the different forces in when testing their marshmallow launchers (pulling, gravity, etc.) STEM home challenge is due October 31. This is a graded assignment (rubric on back of assignment sheet) and is not optional. Simple Solutions→ Simple Solutions Lessons 21-24Lesson 21: Tues. 10/31 Lesson 22: Wed 11/1 Lesson 23: Thurs 11/2 Lesson 24: Mon 11/6 There will be no quiz for these lessons due to our schedule for the week of Halloween
