Music Department and Google Classroom.

As part of the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy, the Music Department has been allocating classes on-line assessments. Year 8 Music students have been recording their riff performances on guitar. After recording, they were required to upload their recordings to Google Classroom. For some students, this has been a challenge. Mrs Curtis checks each recording, before allocating marks and returning those marks via the google classroom. If logged into their device, students can instantly receive their mark.

Music and LOTE classes can access an online classroom notice board to see what their class is working on. Students in Years 7 and 8 use their student portal to access each individual classroom. Absent students are able to print or save the work. This enables students to keep up to date with bookwork and assignments.

Students in Year 7 Music recently completed an Instrument of the Orchestra assignment. The assignment was posted in the Google Classroom, giving students the option of creating an electronic or cardboard poster, each with their own pros and cons. Seven students opted to complete their assignment electronically.

Classwork can also be created using Google Classroom.

These are called “assignments”, but do not have to be

formal assessment tasks. They allow the teacher to see how

much progress is being made in any one lesson and students

have to submit the task when completed. In the image

above, the Program Music assignment, was a research task

in which students had three lessons to complete. When

completing a google assignment, the teacher is able to see

how much work is being completed by each student. The

teacher can also add suggestions and comments to every

students’ work. These comments and suggestions are also

available to print as a record of student progress.

Senior Music On Friday 27th May, Year 12 Music attended the regional

HSC Music Study Day held at Orange High School. They were

introduced to the four components that comprise the HSC

examination – Performance, Aural, Composition and Viva

Voce. The two presenters, Andrew Herft and Nancy Morvillo,

demonstrated sample works to both students and staff,

before combining to provide feedback for a number of live

performances from students. Mrs Curtis

Principal’s News

The School year is progressing quickly with Week 6 Term 2 already upon us.

It is great when our school community pulls together to obtain outcomes for our students. At Canowindra High we do the ‘small’ things very well. Our students participate in school events, wear uniform, attend regularly and look after their physical environment. This culture of respect and connectedness is a great environment to develop good habits, values, and memories.

In the spirit of community and communication, can I commend the new “School Stream” App. School newsletters, events and alerts can be easily accessed through this platform. It is a great way to stay in touch with what’s happening at school.

This year’s NAPLAN tests have focused attention on the new requirements for students to meet a minimum literacy and numeracy standard for the HSC from 2020. Many students and parents are worried their NAPLAN results will preclude them from receiving an HSC. This is not the case.

NAPLAN is only one opportunity for students to demonstrate they meet the minimum standard. Students will receive their results in August. For those who need to demonstrate the minimum standard, NESA is designing new, short online tests in reading, writing and numeracy that will be available for Year 10 next year.

Year 12 hosted events on Friday to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) research. The school dressed in red for the day and a hotly contested trivia competition was held at lunchtime. This, in turn, with a wood raffle met the expected financial target. Year 12 are definitely showing they are good citizens by putting action to their values and compassion. Congratulations to Sophie Tremain on being this week’s winner of the Canteen Voucher.

Year 12 Cystic Fibrosis Fundraiser Year 12 would like to thank the members of the community, staff and students who supported their Cystic Fibrosis Fundraising efforts recently. Approximately $1700 was

raised for 65 Roses (Cystic Fibrosis Australia) through a wood raffle, cake stall, red mufti-day donations and a lunchtime trivia competition. Congratulations to Cindy Walker who won the wood raffle. Thanks again to everyone who helped support this very worthwhile cause!

5 Ways to a Healthy Lifestyle

With good food habits and daily physical activity you will be well on your way to a healthy life. Easy to say, but sometimes not so easy to do! Our busy lifestyles can be hard on our family’s health. Rushing to and from school and work can make it hard to find time to be physically active. We can also slip into the habit of choosing unhealthy snacks and take-away foods or spending our free time watching TV or in front of the computer. However, these choices can be dangerous for our health and our children’s health – both now and in the long-term. That’s why it’s so important to stop, take stock and make a conscious decision to follow a healthy lifestyle. What can I do? There are five simple ways for your family to lead a healthy lifestyle and get back on track: 1. GET ACTIVE EACH DAY

Regular physical activity is important for the healthy growth, development and well-being of kids and teens.

They should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, including vigorous activities that make them ‘huff and puff’. PARENTS SHOULD BE GOOD ROLE MODELS AND HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE TO BEING ACTIVE.

2. CHOOSE WATER AS A DRINK

Water is the best way to quench your thirst – and it doesn’t come with the added sugar found in soft drinks, fruit juice drinks and other sweetened drinks.

Reduced fat milk for children over two years of age is a nutritious drink and a great source of calcium. GIVE KIDS AND TEENS WHOLE FRUIT TO EAT, RATHER THAN OFFERING FRUIT JUICES WHICH CONTAIN LESS FIBRE.

3. EAT MORE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

Eating fruit and vegetables every day helps kids and teens grow and develop, boosts their vitality and can reduce the risk of many chronic diseases.

Aim to eat two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables every day. (This varies for boys and girls at different ages.) HAVE FRESH FRUIT AVAILABLE AS A CONVENIENT SNACK AND TRY TO INCLUDE FRUIT AND VEGIES IN EVERY MEAL.

4. SWITCH OFF THE TV OR COMPUTER AND GET ACTIVE

Sedentary or ‘still’ time spent watching TV, surfing online or playing computer games is linked to kids becoming overweight or obese.

Kids and teens should spend no more than 2 hours a day on ‘small screen’ entertainment. PLAN A RANGE OF ACTIVE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR GAMES OR ACTIVITIES FOR YOUR CHILDREN, AS ALTERNATIVES TO WATCHING TV OR PLAYING ON THE COMPUTER.

5. EAT FEWER SNACKS AND SELECT HEALTHIER ALTERNATIVES

Healthy snacks help kids and teens meet their daily nutritional needs.

Snacks based on fruit and vegetables, reduced fat dairy products and whole grains are the healthiest choices. Avoid snacks that are high in sugar or saturated fats – such as chips, cakes and chocolate – which can cause children to put on excess weight.
