The Eleanor Downing Maxine Miller Memorial FundEleanor Downing and Maxine Miller were great friends and taught together at Edna I. Murphy Elementary School from 1967 – 1982 when Eleanor retired from her position as music teacher for the Grand Rapids School District. Eleanor and Maxine’s friendship went beyond the school day. Eleanor convened a monthly music appre-ciation gathering for her friends who eventually referred to them-selves as the Music Depreciators. Maxine was part of the group and was one of the originators of the Eleanor Downing Fund. The fund originally procured small violins for beginning students but has grown significantly to support the Strings Program with instru-ment purchases and repairs. When Maxine passed away in 2011, the Itasca Orchestra and Strings Program added her name to this important fund, which honors two great ladies of the arts. The fund was moved to the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation where another great friend of Maxine and Eleanor contributed to the fund. Roberta Fahlman held a donor designated fund at the Foundation in memory of her daughter Kirsten Fahlman-Wagner. This fund was joined with the Miller-Downing Fund. Roberta also taught at Mur-phy and also was a member of the Music Depreciators. What a story and a legacy! Donations may be made to the fund by mailing a check payable to IOSP and sent to PO Box 140, Grand Rapids MN 55744 or the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, 350 NW 1st Ave., Grand Rapids MN 55744. Please designate the fund in the memo line. Thank you!
Leave a Legacy: Itasca Orchestra & Strings Program Endowment Fund
With a charitable designation in your will, you can help ensure orchestral music and strings instruction in our community for years to come. The Itasca Orchestra and Strings Program is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) and therefore eligible to be named a beneficiary. The Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation and your attorney can help you leave a legacy to the IOSP endowment fund. In addition, a gift will often reduce estate and transfer taxes. If you decide to leave a legacy of music, we would love to know, so we can thank you.
