MEDIACAMBRIDGE TECHNICALS

WHO IS IT FOR?For students who have a keen interest in the Media world including Film, Photography and Publishing. They are highly creative and imaginative with a keen eye for detail and a passion for Digital Design.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTSMinimum grade 4 or equivalent in GCSE English and preferably GCSE grade C or above in Art & Design.

QUALIFICATION TYPEThis is a new Level 3 vocational qualification which is replacing the old previous specification.

COURSE STRUCTUREWe offer the Diploma programme whichis equivalent to 2 A Levels. The qualification comprises 13 Units which there are 6 mandatory units, 4 pathway optional units and 3 optional units. These Units are:Mandatory Units• Media Product and Audiences• Pre-Production and Planning• Create a Media Product• TV and Short Film Production• Social Media Globalisation.

Pathway Optional Units:• Create Audio/Visual Promos - Music

The unit length is dictated by its weighting and the guided learning hours a unit will either last, half a term, a term or a term and a half.

SKILLS FOR SUCCESSThis is a practical Media course. You need to be interested in developing creative ideas, learning how to use equipment, carrying out detailed planning and paying close attention to detail. There is a basic model that Media projects tend to follow:

• Receive and understand a brief• Research• Planning and Pre-Production• Production• Post-Production• Presentation• Evaluation.

UNIVERSITY PATHWAYSThis courses provide an excellent grounding and preparation for Higher Education study in vocational Media degrees. A good number of our students go on to study Film Production and other practical Media courses.

APPRENTICESHIP PATHWAYSThis is a pathway that has grown considerably with a range of opportunities appearing in avenues such as Design, TV, Photography and Film. The course will allow you to develop a portfolio of work that will enable you toshowcase the range of skills employers want from their apprentices. Past students have found placements in Camera Operation in a TV Studio, working as an Event Photographer, Graphic Design and app based Game Design. The portfolio you produce onthe course will assist with your application to both Higher Education and Apprenticeships.

CAREER PATHWAYSThis qualification is an excellent steppingstone to a practical career in the Media industries - to work as a Camera Operator or Editor, as a Graphic Designer, Visual Effects Designer or Photographer.

FILM STUDIESA LEVEL

WHO IS IT FOR?Students who enjoy watching films, thinking and talking about them, reading about them and trying to express their opinions on them. Students who are good at paying attention to detail and have the patience to look at sequence again and again to get to the meat of it. Students who want to more about the business of cinema, and in what films have to say about the world and about other cultures and traditions.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTSGrade 4 or equivalent in English. FilmStudies is a very essay based academic subject and a reasonable ability in English is the best starting point for success. Prior qualifications in Art, Business and Music are also very relevant.

QUALIFICATION TYPEThis is a Level 3 qualification, a GCE ‘A’ Level. There is also an AS Level qualification available. This year will be the first of a new specification. Film Studies is not considered an ‘Enabling Subject’ by Russell Group universities but is accepted everywhere as a full-value A Level qualification.

COURSE STRUCTUREThere are three modules in the new A Level:• Filmmaking and Spectatorship -

Examination - 35% of qualification• Varieties of Global Film - Examination -

35% of qualification• Production - Coursework - 30% of

qualificationThe exam modules are both assessed by 2 hour 30 minute examinations each covering four topics. The topics include classical and modern Hollywood, mainstream and independent films, silent and sound films, modern British films and European and World films. The Production is a response to a briefset by the exam board and requires youto write a screenplay, create a storyboard for a section of the screenplay and write an evaluativeanalysis.

SKILLS FOR SUCCESSThis is an academic, textual analysis based A Level which makes considerable demands of you in learning to write about ten feature films and two compilations of short films across two final examinations.

You need to be interested in new and different cinema, including films not inEnglish and films from outside the mainstream, and be ready to study sections of a wide range of films repeatedly and in detail.

You also need to have the literacy skillsto develop your ability to write discursive essays - organising your material, learning and using technical vocabulary accurately, and selecting

relevant and useful evidence from films and analysing it closely in order to develop your argument about the films.

UNIVERSITY PATHWAYSThis course provides a very strong academic counterpoint to the more practical Media BTEC and OCR Cambridge Technical courses that we run. It is not a practical course and without Media it wouldn’t prepare you well for a practical Media degree. It is an excellent grounding for more academic Media and Film degree courses and an excellent additional A Level qualification for any academic Arts or Humanities degree study.

CAREER PATHWAYSThis qualification is an excellent stepping stone to academic work in Arts and Humanities and then to further and higher study or to teaching and other educational posts. It provides a solid grounding for government and industry recruitment programmes. It does not by itself provide a pathway to a career in practical media industries, but it does complement more practical Level 3 courses extremely well as a route to those careers.

APPRENTICESHIP PATHWAYSAgain, this is not a practical course and it will not directly lead you into the very practical and vocational Apprenticeship programmes that exist in Media but it would be a very strong complement to a vocational Media course if you were intending to pursue an Apprenticeship.
